Eyes as Windows to the Soul * 1
    #4490593 - 08/03/05 05:30 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Disregarding it's quaint poetry, no one can read another solely (no pun intended)through their eyes.

Sorry, gazing just doesn't work as any form of lie detector or personality assessment tool or whatever. This is yet another popular myth with no basis.

i agree, although i think the phrase is really just expanding poetically on the fact that looking into someone's eyes feels very different to looking at any other part of them. some people just take the phrase a bit too literally.

there are supposedly subtle eye movements that occur when one is tense. an 'untrained' liar would exhibit this when they are lying, i think.

I'm reading "A General Theory of Love," in which the authors describe the state of limbic resonance. Mutual gazing activates the limbic system, or mid-brain, and develops both emotional attachment and a sense of well-being. Of course, as it does not involve the neocortex, it does not aid us in reading thoughts!

Terrific book, BTW, if you're short on summer reading material you might pick it up. I'm a neurology geek, and a romantic, so the blend is quite satisfactory to me.

Not true. The human pupil dilates if they see something they really like, love, or causes arousal.

I'm saying pupil dilation can be a personality indicator of ones feelings towards another individual.

I don't think I'm really taking it the wrong way.

i remember browsing a poker book once
it ran this scenario- it showed the cards involved and A raised, B folded, C called or something like that

and it said, based on this what were their hands? it allowed you to guess then you looked at their hands. and they all had the same hand.

i dont know much about poker (please correct me if i misunderstood something swami) but i thought that was pretty cool.

It doesn't take very much mental training to alter reactions to stimuli.

I wouldn't be suprised if swami gets genuinely upset when he knows he has the winning hand.

I can sense alot about someone through their eyes.

Their pain. Their fears. I can perceive what blockages stand in between them and I... because the eyes are the filters of the world. In one fleeting glimpse you can look into anothers eye and instantly feel every single judgement they have of you. What seperates us? You can tell what the eyes are looking for and what they are fixed upon. What they are not yet willing to see. What emotional dramas they play over and over again. I can see what triggers their lightness and makes them happy. I am pretty special though and my eyes are open. If you try, you're missing the point. Its effortless. its obvious.

I don't believe you when you say you can't derive the truth from someones eyes. I think you must be ignoring aspects of yourself. I know that you are taking it all in but you are only choosing to taste a small peice of the pie.

I could meet you and look you in the eye for a moment and I know I could tell you alot about yourself.

The eyes are not just windows to the soul, they are the most sophisticated multi-dimensional portraits describing every facet that makes up the being.

I think a lot of that comes from the tension and position of the eye lids and undereye area, while the actual eyes remain relatively unchanged (besides maybe the pupils)

semantics, I know...

Yea I don't really know about the technical stuff. I have enough technical shit filling my brain programming for a living. When it comes to people and how we work I just live on the wave of insights, intuitions and feelings and thats enough proof for me

speaking of eyes..

people often say that someone has beautifull eyes, but it really has nothing to do with eyeballs, they are all the same, just with different colors. It's the bones around the eyes and eyebrows that make eyes beautifull

My father inadvertently taught me to become a better liar by always asking me to look him in the eyes when he thought I may have been lying.

Hahahahha your a laugh a minute! I dare you to keep gazing into the eyes of your best male friend the next time you hang out.  :rofl2: He's either going to think you are falling in love with him or some psycho plotting to kill him. :rofl2:

It's one of the most intimate things we can do with another. Why is that?

Why do people who are falling in love just gaze into each others eyes is silence for sometimes hours on end?

Are we secretly turned on my retinas?

If we are just organized molecules, but molecules none the less why not stare into your partners toes during a romantic dinner?

Or are we looking for more of them in there? Why not ask them to open their mouth wide and look into it deeply instead? According to you we should experience the same results.

Why do shy or private people refrain form making eye contact as much as possible with others?

They don't want to be seen or known. You can be staring right at their bodies and they don't care, just don't look into their eyes or they will get embarrassed or upset.

The soul of who you are is found in them.

What is a "quaint idea" is your baking banana bread. The idea that the eyes are the window to the soul of the body has experiential merit.

When people want to be seen and heard, they demand that you look into their eyes. Why if they are just nerves and muscles and molecules? You can hear and see their body just as well looking at their nose.

For you single people out there looking to get close and intimate with someone quickly, who you know already likes you, just slap a goofy smile on your face and gaze into their eyes as much as possible. They will trust you easier because they will feel like they "know you well". If a strong liking and mutual attraction is already there it will give the other one butterflies in the stomach and make them weak in the knees and puddy in your hands.

Making eye contact in business negotiations works like a charm as well because it establishes a sense of trust because it establishes a sense of being closer in a "knowing them" way even though you hardly know each other.

I do think that the eyes are the window to the soul plain and simple and I believe everyone has one, even if it dies with the body.

If our eyes are not the windows to the souls that live inside of our bodies then we might as well just start looking people we want to know better in the nose knees and toes all of the time.  We don't, and won't for a reason.

Whose will is stronger. A bard could command a life by glare and gestures alone, a stare can break your thought as easy as you ever feared. Fear is it, and blind avoidance of what is around you.
The man who masters self, can show whatever he wants through his eyes. The giant bluff, every day making up yourself to keep doing what you do best. When you glance away, you learn.
