Well there ya go.
Speilberg was probably too afraid to radically change the story by fucking with the ending.

Thats because the book portrayed the aliens that way
The Moody Blues did a soundtrack for War Of The Worlds in the late `70s
It was some pretty good music
Justin Hayward was a great musician
this is the lyrics from one of the War of the Worlds songs

Forever Autumn
The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near.
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you're not here.
I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear.
I wish that I was flying with them
Now you're not here.

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me.
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away.

Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way,
You always loved this time of year.
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
'Cause you're not here.
'Cause you're not here.
'Cause you're not here.

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me,
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away.

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear,
My life will be forever autumn
'Cause you're not here.
'Cause you're not here.
'Cause you're not here.

I wouldn't bother renting it, since the only reason to see it is because of the great special effects.

I really liked it...  I went into it expecting to see a shitty summer blockbuster special effects type thing, and it was indeed a shitty movie.  But really entertaining.  The effects were insane.  There was very little blatant CGI cheese which I can't stand.  The tripods were terrifyingly rendered, the SOUND they make gets under your skin.  Spielberg knows how to pull the threads of suspense very well.  Of course it had a shit plot and didn't make sense and all that, its not hard to find problems with a movie like that.  But I'd see it again

yeah they were supposed to be blood.
(remember:the scene with the machine disecting the man and a tube sucking his blood out)
that is why the cellar guy got fanatic, he didn't want the aliens to use his blood as "fertilizer."
I think the roots made out of blood were totally unecessary (it wasn't in the first movie.)  It was just icky and gruesome and soley for shock value. :projectile:

i also didnt like this one. it started off pretty well, or maybe it was because i was blazed as fuck. the vibe i got from it was all drama, little action, and not true to the original movie. the original wipes the floor and wipes its ass with this remake, seriously! it seemed too...CGI, unbelievable (shoe+mirror scene anyone?) at parts, and oh yeah, did i mention DRAMA?

it made me think i was watching a chick flick with all the damn drama. more action man, more suspense! to think they charge $8 a ticket here.. :frown:

i enjoyed it, no story but it felt like you were really there and was fun.. maybe it was that i was in an expensive theatre in a lazy boy seat getting beer served to me.. nah the visuals and sound were amazing

the ending was a bit of an anticlimax...

The book was, as always, MUCH better. This movie totally sucked, while i was watching it i was asking myself if Spielberg even read the book or not. Its so badly adapted, i mean Tim Robbins' character for example, is a mix of two different characters from the book.

And i hated that Spielberg never explained the reason why martians attacked earth. In the book, Wells says that Mars was a dying planet and martians had no more ressources. In the movie, it just says that martians only goal was to exterminate the human race.

Oh, and the red plants are martian vegetation that came with the aliens. But there's no way the movie could'v explained this because of the way spielberg made aliens arrive on earth (by means of lightning travel or something). In the book, they arrive in a big metal box that falls on earth like a comet and makes a big crater, and the machines come out of that metal box. And there's only a dozen of these machines in the book.

there's lots of other discrepancies i could point out, but to make it short, spielberg fucked up by making this movie. he shouldn't have done it. what the fuck happened to him since his E.T. years??

P.S. I don't have anything against tom cruise!

well, for the record, I've never read the book, and all the things you said spielberg didnt explain in the movie, I totally understood immediately. In the beginning the narrator says they watched us with envious eyes, which I took as meaning exactly what you claim to say he never explained. Same with the plants. It was obvious what they were.

The worst thing a director can possibly do is directly explain anything in their movie. Meanings and motivations should become clear by the way the story unfolds. When a director has to spell something out like "they came here because mars was dying and they liked earth so they decided to take it from us", that's like the director saying "ok, you dumbfucks, since you obviously cant figure this out for yourselves, here's what's going on"

I thought it was a good movie. Only part I didnt like was the "everything is ok" ending where the son comes back and all that stupid BS. Should have ended with Cruise and his daughter standing together, looking up at one of the dead tripods. Otherwise I really enjoyed it. The way he handled the human reactions was exemplary. The minivan scene was perfect. I don't think I've ever seen a character that behaved so "realisticly" when faced with the apocalypse. There wasnt really ever a point when I thought to myself "wtf is he doing, there's no reason for that". He behaved just like a terrified average joe who's only trying to save the ones he loves amidst indescribable chaos.

Aside from the stupid happy ending, the only reasons I've heard for people not liking it is that it "wasnt exactly like the book". I think that's pretty narrow-minded to think that a MOVIE adaptation of a BOOK would have to follow the original story word-for-word. Movies are not books. You can't tell a book-sized story in a movie (usually). Things that work well in print dont always work well on the screen, just like things that work well in live-action movies dont work well in animated movies. Ever see final fantasy? Want to know one of the biggest reasons that it sucked? They used mo-cap to animate the characters. They moved exactly how real people moved, and you cant do that, because people have a lot of little nuances that make it work in live action, but when you transalte that to animation it looks like stiff dead crap. When you animate, you need to exaggerate the theatrify all the movement so people read them correctly.

An adaptation is just that, and adaptaion of an existing story to a new medium, and all the necessary changes that go along with that process.

mmm... looks like I'm in a long-winded typing mood this morning. Good.

In response to some of you Steven Spielberg didn't write the screenplay, two other people did. So, it really wasn't him that wasn't explaining things and such.

I am going to see it today. I say enjoy things for what they are. That has been my philosophy and I am much happier for it.
