I thought their constitution openly stated the People's Republic of China is a socialist state under democratic dictatorship?

Wasn't the aim of that to directly expedite communism?

Please note I'm not arguing for or against communism here, I want to understand why that's the definition I've seen/I'd argue most commonly believe to be true as well.

Meh. I really don't see any issue with academic partnerships between US and Chinese institutions. Yeah the government does fucked up shit, but literally one seventh of the entire world's population is Chinese -- we'd be operating at a huge handicap if we refused to work with one out of 7 of every one of the world's scientists on the basis of their nationality alone.

its common in china for foreigners to get turned away from hotels in the mainland because they arent in the system

this is a cornell program so its going to be upper management 

so basically surveillance and money laundering

and the chinese students dont stay here, they take their skills back to china cause theres more opportunity

Let’s be clear, the Chinese are an economic threat to the US because there are over a billion of them, they are more disciplined, and they are better at capitalism. It has absolutely nothing to do with communism. If China were still a communist country we wouldn’t feel threatened.

cause a lot of the science espionage is based about learning advanced tekz but not paying for the liscence when they take it home and use it in china cause the dont resect da law

Come on now, you can't really think that. Sure, spying and IP theft definitely happen, but it's not like that's unique to Chinese nationals. Besides, I feel like there's a lot of media panic over what essentially amounts to a difference in jurisdiction. I'm certainly not a patent lawyer, but US patents don't hold in any non-US country and as far as I know there isn't anything special about China that allows someone to profit off US patents any more than you could in the EU or any other country for that matter.

The Chinese international students I've met seem to come here to get fleeced for 4x the tuition domestic students pay. And, in a handful of cases, to show off that they can also afford exotic supercars.

In grad school I worked with a very sweet chinese girl.  Hard worker, reliable and kind.  Because I was usually the first one in the lab in the morning, I had the distinctly awful experience of finding her dead body.  Turns out her research wasn't producing enough results for my PI/Adviser and he was telling her constantly she was going to lose her visa.  She ate potassium cyanide instead.  I was all fucked up for months after that, my boss didn't miss a fucking beat cause he is a psychopath.

I showed up pretty shortly after she did it, as rigor mortis was just setting in (so about 1 to 2 hours, probably closer to 1) and despite the fact she was obviously dead, I still checked for a pulse and she was still warm. Takes about 12 hours to cool to room temp. Useless info I learned earning an associates in forensic science.  I still have nightmares every now and then about it.

Chinese communism sucks at human rights level, but it's not the worst ever. Either way what history will remember more, is that China revolutionized communism as an economic success story.

I spent 12 years at a university with a top four engineering program, so there were a lot of Chinese students. They were all questioned by their government security every time they returned home.

Some Chinese students with grad degrees stay here but many return home. There may be pressure on their families if they don't, IDK. But I knew 20 something Indian students in grad school, and only 2, a married couple moved back home.

It's the first time communism has been viewed as a success, so it provides more of a model for less developed countries than any previous incarnation of communism. Meanwhile, particularly in the last four years, the U.S. is viewed as less of a model than previously. People all over the world were particularly freaked out by the capital riot.

Coronavirus killed off the resistance in Taiwan, people could not assemble, China arrested and imprisoned anyone who had any chance of standing against them in elections.

Ethnic cleansing is a huge thing in the motherland. Some people here bang on about having Nazis, but the true face of horror that that movement was is beginning to play out again. It's early warning signs. If they have no issue imprisoning millions of their own people in concentration camps for not being the Chinese Aryan what do you think comes next?

Cyber espionage and crime by China is at an all time high. State sponsored advanced persistent threat groups from China are making moves against the infrastructure of the rest of the world in general.

There is no part of the Chinese mentality that can ever stop pushing until they have complete domination. They have 50 year plans on everything and are playing the long game, gradually applying more and more pressure.

The only way we can stop them is by starting to make our own stuff, bringing our industry back home. Unless we do that we are doomed to war. They are building the military capabilities now to rival the US. The only way out is to stop financing their outrageous designs on our planet.

It is not the Chinese people, they do not know what is happening. It is their crazy ass government.

By the way for the record, I do understand exactly what you're saying and not trying to argue. They probably do have a lot of capitalist characteristics and do in some ways probably masquerade as a socialist state now. Indeed, the US war machine has behaved reprehensibly since the 60's. It makes more than half a century now of glorious war in the name of freedom in any other country except it's own.

What are we going to do though if we lock horns with China and they cut off the vast majority of our medical supply? They can, and all we can do is go crawling to them like beaten dogs. They can kill innumerable Westerners just by saying "no". It is just another one of the many ways they have cheated, lied, stolen, deceived and worked like crazy without care for the short term to win in the long term. Our greed and laziness has played straight into their ambitions.

The sooner people realise the threat at their door is not some cleric dude in a cave with an AK-47, but the smiling enemy making their industries redundant, the sooner we can move to better equalise and balance this catastrophe that is playing out in real time.

The writing is on the wall. People just need to wake the hell up and realise they have been had and you can't really buy everything for cheap from China, the cost is much greater. The longer we leave it the worse it's going to get.

the communism 'good on paper bad in reality' has been told a lot to me throughout history, and I agree that it's a compelling point for obvious reasons (what's another try going to accomplish?). But I do think a good part of why communism can't succeed is because capitalist countries really really push hard against it. I'm not sure how legitimate this is I am quite literally bullshitting.

one of the reasons I've been thinking about alternatives to capitalism lately is because of how hard the government tries to squash it. they try really, really hard, and have done so since communism became a thing. I sometimes forget how ridiculous and destructive the anti-communism of the US and CIA has been throughout history and that is enough to make me think about why that is.

Communism fails for the same reason any government system fails. Inadequate checks and balances preventing corruption, power seizes and favors for 3rd party interests. Can literally happen to any nation regardless of it's core philosophies.

I think communism tends to fail mostly because it is strongly tied with revolutionary movements, and in the collapse of old systems power vacuums are stronger forces than political philosophy or civic religion, and hard to balance once power is seized. At the end of the day, capitalism and communism are just political narratives from which powerful influences draw support. Checks and balances can be established in any new government system, if the revolutionary leadership is willing to let go after the seizing.

Tyrants are a more common conclusion of peasant class uprisings than stable governments, but when checks and balances are established it's much harder for tyrants to seize power easily.

I am aware that most people don't associate China with capitalism, but if I took a poll of people I know asking if they thought of China as a "socialist state", I'm not at all convinced that most of them would say yes, or even close to most of them. I can't think of anything about China that is inherently more "socialist" than my own country off the top of my head. They are definitely more authoritarian. IME uneducated people sometimes conflate authoritarianism with socialism, so maybe that is what you're thinking.

They claim to be communist, but in reality they are authoritarian capitalists. Chinese capitalists burn their people to make money rather than burning them for ideals alone.

Then difference between a Chinese worker on bread line and an ex-Soviet State worker on bread line is very little. The absolute despair, threat of violence and death for insubordination and total suppression of communication and independence. Many Chinese are true believers in the cause as well. They believe all other races to be inferior, especially white people. We are stupid peasants, little more than animals, and we know how they treat animals.

The Chinese communist party has taken chosen parts of the Nazi and Stalin regimes and combined them.

I've had people come here to my lab from China as part of a company employee placement. They come in with heads held high looking down on us, then comes the dawning realisation that we're pretty fucking smart and not just gweilos, then they realise that we're not horrible animals and the propaganda isn't true. Within a few months we get on great, really nice people, then they get sent home suddenly without notice. This plays out again and again. The stories I hear from them... it's just insane east side. The populace is truly indoctrinated.

I must have missed the indoctrination class in the USA where we learn that people in the UK are not smart and are horrible animals

If anything, the reverse is the case- people in the UK tend to scoff at Americans. Like, taking any opportunity to make jokes about mass shootings in schools. What do Americans say about Brits? That their teeth are gross? Not exactly equivalent

I read a tweet once that the USA outsourced jobs to China not ideals. Anybody that whines about China should take a look around their homes at all the shit they possess. Operating under laissez--faire capitalism, multinational corporations born  in the USA turned China into the manufacturing giant that it is today. If the OP still views China as some kind of red scourge, it’s thanks to consumers like themselves that China is more powerful than ever. It’s dumb to critique China as the western world starts circling the toilet bowl of history. Everyone gets their comeuppance if the timeline is long enough. Anyway, China has been transitioning to a capitalist economy for quite awhile now

Not that I've seen, most humans as individuals are very nice and just want to get through life with the minimum of pain. Even people who act like savages on social media when you get them alone are actually pretty cool.

Americans are easy to scoff at for the rest of the world because of a very vocal minority acting like complete and utter muppets. I don't know if you guys have any idea what your politics insanity looks like to the rest of the world. It's pretty ludicrous.

Though westerners have no idea what indoctrination is unless they learn about what happens in the east. They do not understand the living realities of a one party state and all the glorious and unopposed propaganda that goes with it. They don't understand the implications of social control tools like WeChat nor government mandated business compliance.

I know plenty of nice, cool people who are terrible animals. I’m one myself most of the time. You’re not absolved of guilt just because you’re oblivious to all the suffering of others that makes your own life of minimal pain possible.

We take for granted the underlying suffering and destruction upon which our lives are necessarily based. The higher you are in the hierarchy of society, the more exploitation is involved in sustaining your lifestyle. Without a more empathetic, all-encompassing awareness humanity is fucked.

Far too much value is placed on being nice. You can be a very nice person and still be an absolute shit.
