In grad school I worked with a very sweet chinese girl.  Hard worker, reliable and kind.  Because I was usually the first one in the lab in the morning, I had the distinctly awful experience of finding her dead body.  Turns out her research wasn't producing enough results for my PI/Adviser and he was telling her constantly she was going to lose her visa.  She ate potassium cyanide instead.  I was all fucked up for months after that, my boss didn't miss a fucking beat cause he is a psychopath.

I showed up pretty shortly after she did it, as rigor mortis was just setting in (so about 1 to 2 hours, probably closer to 1) and despite the fact she was obviously dead, I still checked for a pulse and she was still warm. Takes about 12 hours to cool to room temp. Useless info I learned earning an associates in forensic science.  I still have nightmares every now and then about it.

Chinese communism sucks at human rights level, but it's not the worst ever. Either way what history will remember more, is that China revolutionized communism as an economic success story.

I spent 12 years at a university with a top four engineering program, so there were a lot of Chinese students. They were all questioned by their government security every time they returned home.

Some Chinese students with grad degrees stay here but many return home. There may be pressure on their families if they don't, IDK. But I knew 20 something Indian students in grad school, and only 2, a married couple moved back home.

It's the first time communism has been viewed as a success, so it provides more of a model for less developed countries than any previous incarnation of communism. Meanwhile, particularly in the last four years, the U.S. is viewed as less of a model than previously. People all over the world were particularly freaked out by the capital riot.

I don't think the Chinese model of governance fits the label of "communist" any more than "national socialism" was socialist.

Its kinda like buying cranberry juice and discovering that its 99% apple juice with cranberry.. aroma.

They should just call it Chinism as it is their way more so than another's.

Someone is talking about finding their coworker's dead body and the difficulties of feeling like their boss didn't care about the death. I get that you're trying to make a pun, but it really doesn't come off well given the context of the conversation.

The competence in stopping their covid outbreak compared to western countries is also another fail for the west. Say what you will about their draconian methods, but they did manage to save their economy from any serious effects.
