why do you interchange "sacredness" with "necessary for life" or "sustainance"? I do not understand the connection.

If these people are starving and need food, they will choose the apple. If they are not starving and looking for some sort of spiritual experience (where the whole sacred thing comes from), they will choose the mushroom.

When you go that deep theres no point in discussions like this at all   We can at least try and figure out what is really real and what is't.

There is a big diference between what exists in our minds and what really exists, does enlightenment involve seeing everything for what it really is?  I dont think that is even possible, its impossible trying to grasp the immensity of just one house let alone all the little bits and pieces, molecules and paticles, electrons and protons....

Hue, some people have a diferent definition of sacredness to you.  I may feel a location is sacred to me, such as a garden or a tree...  Some however will state that an object or area is sacred end of story.  Not just to them but that it IS holy.

In this thought experiment, let's put all shroomerites in prison without food and see if they first ask for an apple or a shroom.

That's an easy one. First I would ask for shrooms. Then when I came down and was hungry, I would ask for an apple. Watch how you word those questions.

Which is more sacred? Life or inert matter? In which state is one better able to search for God?

If these people are starving and need food, they will choose the apple.
Very good, we are making real progress now.

If they are not starving and looking for some sort of spiritual experience (where the whole sacred thing comes from), they will choose the mushroom.
But only if they are alive from eating the apple.

That aint too bad..if the apple is generous. Could I trade half of my apple? And if could I trade the other half for a beer...after all I need some nutrition to keep going.

But there is no difference between real and unreal outside our minds because there is nobody there to experience the difference

This is getting back to that sound in the woods discussion..

this and previous post was in the spirit of : a branch does not make a sound if nobody hears, it, furtheremore there is no difference between a brach and anything else outside our minds, there is no difference between existence and nonexistence of the branch outside our minds

Again, why do you assume that something sacred must also have a nutritional or health-sustainable component? Cannot certain locations be "sacred" or rituals be "sacred" to some?

I do not see the connection. As movingtarget said, food is necessary. The need for it is not necessarily an exercise in sacred activity - it sure can be, but it does not have to be. Yes, food keeps living beings alive - and some may recognize this value and regard it as "sacred."

Quote:
But only if they are alive from eating the apple.

...and only if they breathe oxygen, right?

I do not think the notion of "sacredness" is some sort of physical attribute where you can assign emperical values to ("apples are more sacred than mushrooms"). Again, it is all in the eye of the beholder (or worshipper, for that matter).

Certain things keep humans alive, you are correct. They can be considered sacred or life-providing, but that does not mean all other things considered sacred (mushrooms, relics, bones, locations, etc.) must be "life-providing" as well. They just have to have some important place in one's spiritual beliefs.

"Apples have negligible nutritional value"

I don't buy them.  They have expensive fiber and a lot of gut churning acid.  Kind of like shrooms in that regard but at least with shroom it's worth the stomach discomfort.

As for prisoners preferring apples over shrooms, whether starving or not (assuming this is a one time deal) I am guessing they would take the shrooms.  If you are going to meet your maker, at least enjoy the experience.  :crazy2:

And if the prisoners weren't starving, no doubt it would be shrooms. :mushroom2:

Swami has trouble using a dictionary.
Sometimes, he gets his definitions confused.

sacred 1: set apart for the service or worship of deity. 2: devoted exclusively to one service or use. 3: worthy of veneration or reverence. 4: of or relation to religion

necessary 1: INEVITABLE, INESCAPABLE; also CERTAIN 3: PREDETERMINED 3: COMPULSORY 4: positively needed

Apples are not necessary nor sacred. You can live your whole life and never eat an apple. So by the strictest example, apples are not necessary. And unless you consider apple pie at Christmas to be sacred, then I don't see apples being sacred either.

You must really love apples, Swami, to consider them as sacred as shrooms.

Almost anyone who has tried magic mushrooms will tell you they are sacred, in some form or fashion.

The same can't be said about apples.

Also, shrooms dont cause bad trips..... the concrete reality which you so faithfully believed in was shattered, THAT causes a bad shrooms trip.
Shrooms dont make people angry, crazy, scared, or violent. Guns dont kill people. Spoons dont make you fat.
