Doing da h/poo
    #3960973 - 03/23/05 05:29 PM (19 years, 9 days ago)

1. Fill large pot 1/2 or 3/4 full h/poo.

2. Add enough spring -or- distilled -or- boiled (allowed to cool) water (so clorine is disapated) to cover content.

3. Allow to soak for an hour (to hydrate & looosen h/poo), stir to break up clumps, dig in with washed hands(or wear gloves)& crumble all clumps until consistancy of everything in pot is moist fibers (no clumps, lumps or nuggets).

4. Add 10 to 20% chunky verm (if you want, or prefer to)

5. Heat pot until content is warm, but not so hot you cannot handle it, by hand.

6. Drain off as much water as possible.

7. With large ladle (or by hand) remove some content & place in collender (in sink), then mash to remove excess moisture, so mixture is not soupy.

8. Do SQEEEZE TEST (by hand). You want to be able to pick up handfull, THAT DOESNT DRIP, but does drip a few drops - when you give it a GENTLE SQUEEZE.

9. Load (squeeze tested) h/poo into any type baking, or autoclave bag.

10. Use rubber band to hold bag neck closed.

11. Place a plate in large water pot bottom (so bag doesnt contact hot pot bottom directly).

12. Submerse bag in large pot of water, turn heat to low.

13. Use candy thermometer (held in place near bag neck - with rubber band) to monitor water temp.

14. Get water temp up to 160 / 170 F range (DO NOT GO OVER 180F).

15. Simmer submersed bag at 160 / 170 F range two (2) hours.

16. Remove bag, TIGHTEN RUBBER BAND, so bag is AIR TIGHT & allow to cool to room temp.

17. Once bag is cooled to room temp. If it appears content is a little to moist. Loosen rubber band on bag neck, hold bag over sink (upside down) & squeeze out any excess moisture.

18. If bag content appears to DRY, add TINY bit of pre/boiled water (allowed to cool to room temp) a VERY SMALL increment at a time, to adjust moisture content.

19. In aseptic conditions, dump (however much) into SANITIZED TRAY & add spawn ASAP (20% + spawn rate).

(NOTE - most bulk h/poo substrate failures (other than mold type contams)are caused by substrate BEING TO WET, at spawning)

Do you have to soak it and crumble it and stuff?

it'll pretty much fall apart when you soak it, a little stirring helps

Sometimes. But, just 10 or 15% of the chunky size verm.

I have also added ground up boiled corn cob, and/or well chopped straw.

But if consistancy of h/poo feels good & moisture content is right. Nothing extra is needed.

H/poo performs well, with -or- without extra's. So, why bother. I did - just tinkering around.

14. Get water temp up to 160 / 170 F range (DO NOT GO OVER 180F).

15. Simmer submersed bag at 160 / 170 F range two (2) hours.

At this point...you only measure the water at 160...drop in the poo and time 2 hours from then? It seems to take near that long for the center of the substrate to heat up that hot...or is it 2 hours from when the center of the substrate reaches 160?

H/poo should be pretty warm / hot (not over 180F)----- > when you load it in the bag (from #5 above).

If bag content isn't that warm - after squeeze test & bag loading - or is allowed to get cooled off.

You can microwave (nuke) the rubber band sealed bag for a very short time ( a few 30 second blasts)- until content is in the 150/160F range (not over 180F), then submerse bag in pot of water, also - pre/heated to the 160 / 170F range.

Hope that answers - your Q?

Sure does...I waited to long and barly warmed the pan...figured it was to heat the room temp water so the poo and verm would absorb it better...it got cooled pretty well by the time I started pasteurizing the bags...so I tossed them in the microwave and got them to about 140 before dropping them in the water. But I came to check today and didnt notice you letting it get that warm first and wanted to check...spawning two dish pans tonight...we'll see how it went soon.

One bag though...when I was heating it..started boiling a little....I hope it'll be ok...

They looks a little wet too...even after squeezing and draining. Next time though I think it will turn out better and I still got like 20 pounds..alrighty...thats agar..back to pressure cooking.

Going over 180F will not cause you any problems. I work with impulse sealed bags that get submerged via hot water pasteurization. Initially I bring temp around 200 to get things adjusted, then slowly bring it down from there. Especially when working with any mass of poo (10+ LBS. per bag) you are dealing with a lot of material and a thick ass core to penetrate.

My point is: Don't work too hard reaching that exact temperature range in the beginning. If your water is 200F, so be it, toss your shit in and begin the timer. I feel that a beginning higher temp helps to get things going faster. Let it drop from there and maintain temps.

Just my .02, hope it helps someone trying this out.

BUMP

Tried this tonight with an oven bag and it wouldn't sink. Just floated.

I'm guessing I need a thicker mil bag. Like a spawn bag or the like. (3 mil)
