ok a hell of alot of people have asked for my horse poo tek.
first off It's not my horse poo tek.
It was taught to pleezr and I by Pavlov's Dog.....in person at his house.
I have changed it a bit....but credit is due to him, not me....I'm no theif.

Also the using the food processor part was taken from OldTimer....I believe.

So here is the horse poo tek, Pav said that I could write this up!

You want the horse poo to be dried out....this is important.
If you can only get fresh horse shit....dry it out yourself!
Then you put some in a pillow case....amount depends on the size of your pot.
Tie off the pillow case.....Put it in a big ass pot.
put purified or mineral water in the pot....tap water is fine if you have good quality tap water.
Get a weight to hold the pillow case down....I use a 20 pound weight lifting weight.
get a candy thermometer.....you'll need one....most grocery stores have it.
turn the stove on and get it up to 160 to 175 degrees.
make sure by checking the candy thermometer.
this is called pasturizing. ....don't go over 175 degrees.
do this for 30 to 40 minutes.
after you are done.....let it cool down.
then ring the pillow case out into the pot.
after some good ringing out.....throw the pillow case into the sink to drain.
leave in there for a hour or so...longer is better.
Keep the poo water....you can use that for your water mixtures....for like cakes or grains.....the added nutrients of the poo water is good!
I fill up empty gallon water jugs with poo water....Roses like it too.
Now that the pillow case is done draining after awhile....open it up and check it.
It should be moist.....not runny.....hand squeeze it out if you have to.
you can wash your hands later if you don't like icky stuff....doesn't bother me.
Get some large alum Bread pans from the store.....they are like 2 for $1.79.
Fill the bread pan with 3" to 4" of the poo.
**note ***** I have switched to using large black plastic pans.....since the Alum pans don't hold up well....they get holes in them from a chemical reaction. *****
make sure that the poo is cool...after it is cool.....proceed.

Take a PF cake and put it in a food processor...and hit the start button a few times.
break the cake up into little peices....don't over do it...or you will get putty.
*** You will get thousands of inoculation points to the poo by using a food processor....cause the substrate will be well broken up and spread out more ***
If you don't have a food processor.....break the cake up by hand.
but if you break them up by hand...make sure that they are broken up really small.
You can spawn the cake into the poo that is in the bread pan.....mix it up really good....only a 1/2 pint cake is needed per pan.
If you want.....you can spawn with Grain, Birseed....etc.
Doesn't have to be a BRF cake.
Cover up the pan with Alum foil after you have mixed in the substrate with the poo.
Take a fork and punch little holes in several places.....like 9 places in the Alum foil though out the top.
Stick this in the incubator......and you should see growth in a day or 2.
After you get the whole pan of poo colonized you can case it with a Coco Coir casing or any casing layer you want.....or you can let it fruit in the fruiting chamber without a casing layer..... a casing layer can be better!
Of course you would leave the container in the incubator if you put a top casing layer on.

Good stuff Roadkill.

Personally, I like to use colonized rye grain. I find its easier to colonize a jar of rye grain than it is to grow a pf cake. Then you have to break up the cake with your hands or food processor, all the while risking adding contams.
I made mycellial syringes once by throwing a pf cake into a milkshake mixer. It worked ok but a jar of rye grain is way easier and cheaper.

lol. i went to a cow pasture yesterday, and after finding NO completely dry patties, i decided i wasnt gonna take a total loss, so i got the 1/2 dried ones. ya know, crusty on the top and gooy in da middle. ( a real cow pie). by the time i had 1/2 of a garbage bag full, i had shit almost to my elbows... lol what wont we do for this hobby? lmao

I agree that colonizing Rye Grain is easier and faster.
The fastest colonizer I have had in the horse poo to date is the Un Id Floriduh strain..... and that was on Rye Grain spawned into the poo!

but.....I have say that using a food processor isn't that prone to contams.
I have done this over 20 times now......no contams.

Basically I'm just trying to help the newer people learn a few technics that will help them along.....they can go from BRF cakes straight into casing this way.
And they will get bigger fruits and larger flushes.....thats the bottom line!

Right on Road!! I was waiting for you to give Pavlovs dog the credit. He will dig it!

A few tips I would like to mention:

Moisture content of the dung is very important. Most know the routine, squeeze untill a few drops run down your fingers, that is ideal. Though you can experiment with moisture content untill you find what suits you best. I know a guy that likes to make it a tad bit more moist. Be carefull though It is important that its not too wet.

If the temps get too high at pasturization you can kill the beneficial bacteria. I know a guy that let it reach 250 by accident, which is sterilization and not pasturization. The result was very disappointing.

I know a guy who likes to use more spawn for super fast colonization. This way no contams really have a chance to take hold.

If you dont have a food processor you can use a blender with equal results.

I know a guy that has found that dung is very contam resistant. He sometimes dont wash his hands when handling the substrate or dung, and has had no probs whatsoever with contams, with the exception of the casing layer which dude knows is very important to be sterile. But wash your hands anyway, dont listen to him You are better off being clean.

And as a confidence booster for the peep new to poo... This is a SIMPLE bulk tek. There really is nothing to it. Any newbie can handle this. Dung can make all the difference in fruit size and flush size.

Just what i was looking for. I have been using straw substrates bu heard that dung had more nutrients for mushrooms. Does anybody know about a straw/dung mix?

dry horse dung doesn't really smell even when its being pasteurized. If anything it just kinda smells faintly like a horse does...imagine that!

the smell of horse poo pasturizing is best described as Earthy.
doesn't smell like shit per say.
but the smell can be strong when you are pasturizing it.....if that is what you are worried about....so I wouldn't do this in Mom's kitchen boys and girls!
some people like it and some people can't stand the smell.
doesn't bother me much.

horse poo really doesn't smell much after it is colonizing.
I can hardly smell anything in my fruiting chambers.....if that is what you are worried about.

Im new to this cultivation thing. I just oredered the mushroom cultivators guide. i will have to keep this thread in mind once i start reading more about it. Im sure i can find cow or horse shit. i am from Indiana after all. Postalboy

I just wanted to add a couple things to this thread that I think are relevant.

1. Pasteurizing for a little longer, like 1-1.5 hours has made a lot of difference for me.

2. Make sure that you squeeze every last little bit of moisture out of the dung before you innoculate. Even lay it out for a little while to let it dry out just a little more.

Doing these two things has drastically helped me conquer the poo!

May all your poo bins be fluffy like the clouds and pin like a mofo...hehe

Does anyone know the ratio of BRF substrate to poo? This tek is excellent, but there is one missing part- how big of a pie tin is being used? Roadkill says to use one half pint per pie tin, but what the hell size of pie tin? If I am using a big tin, then a half pint may be too little. If I use a small tin, it might be overkill.

He doesnt use pie tins anymore cause they get holes in them after awhile...but im sure he used the bread pan size.

Id say 1/2 pint per square foot of dung would be fine.

Yes....the Orissa India is a real poo lover!
These monsters will grow huge on the poo!!!!

I had one Orissa India that got over 20" long.....and the cap was 5" to 6" wide.

I'm going to be updating this tek pretty soon.
You can pasturize the poo longer......but i have had great results with 30 to 40 minutes....I see that CLub does it longer....but I don't bother cause it works....if it works don't fix it.
I'm doing away with Alum bread pans from the grocery store....seems the Alum corodesI'm using black plastic trays from Home Depot.....checking into getting some black plastic mortar boxes.....they are heavy duty!!!!

Also you can use more spawn and get alot faster colonization through the poo!

I'm getting alot of PM's from people getting great results from the horse poo tek.

That was the intention of this tek......to try and make things easier and get you more shrooms.

You can get horse poo almost anywhere.....for free too!
Check your local stables.... ask the farmer down the road.... please don't jump a fence and steal.... most people will give freely.
If you are worried about them asking you what you need it for.... tell them you want some for your roses.....or garden.

I'd never go back to just doing cakes....after casing with poo!

Awhile back there was a thread about some poo ... it was about trying not to get poo from horse that have a high salt diet
cause it drys out your casing ... does that matter??
