Thanks, these (click) mex b were grown using the same method, same temps ext.
Only difference was the spawn, in this thread i used
millet, in the linked thread i used perrenial rye grass seed.

Whats the logic of adding the thin layer of straw? How thin?

How does the filter thing compare to foil or plastic covers? Did you have problems with nasties falling in during incubation? Is that why you started using the filters?
Ive been tryin to figure out a way to easily cure that problem myself. I was gonna buy a hepa but this may work well.

That casing mix has no nutrition. correct?
Does it change color when it dries? Im lookin for a simple casing recipe.

Thanks

I add the thin layer of straw over the mixed spawn so
that once the top is colonised, I know the that the deeper
substrate is also well colonised, rather than the spawn at
the surface just growing faster due to better air, and making
it look as though the whole bulk tray is ready.

I find the filters to be good, and speed up colonisation a little, due
to better air exchange, though just the bags alone seems to work ok too,
just not as fast.

I havent really had many problems with nasty in bulk straw mixes, but
i have a clean room with a hepa and carbon air filter were i do all the mixing.

The casing mix i use has some nutrient value, as i use multipurpose compost
instead of coir, but not a lot of nuts still.

Its 50% multipurpose, 50% verm with a hand full of oystershell.
I mix it up, add boiling water untill its as wet as i need.
Nuked for 2 mins on full, shake, and nuke again for 2 or 3 mins on full.
Colled and used.

Its a massive help, I dont regret the money spent at all, in fact, i
think I'm going to spend more on a better hepa (larger)

I do all my work in a small room I have converted into a lab.
Nice and white and washerbal :-) Turn the hepa on for an hour before work, and it cleans all the air in no time.
