Faith in the unproven, the unknown & unknowable
    #3375012 - 11/17/04 03:51 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I understand that people have a desire for answers to the reason for their being, why they seek a spiritual component to existence, I have the same yearnings. However, I don't understand why many insist on believing in that which cannot be proven, why they have faith in books written by men who lived in an age of ignorance and superstition, why they should choose one mythology over another and not treat all mythologies with equal suspicion.

Can somebody explain why we should abandon our intellect and accept the belief systems of others merely because it is written? Isn't rather presumptuous and ignorant to assume that your religion has a monopoly on the truth? Why reject a belief in elves, but think that a Muhammad or a Jesus somehow had a personal pipeline to the universal consciousness (even though the proof of such a thing is non-existent). How can one person have an untarnished, complete and accurate interpretation of the nature of all that is when his view is through a narrow window of one consciousness? Why do so many have faith in fantastical explanations for the unproven, the unknown and the unknowable?

The problem here, I think, is that for people who believe in something like God, their faith itself is their "proof".

What one person will accept as truth, others will not.

But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

if problem is past, cause is present, solution is future out of the blue, cal it faith, aplying this to focus.
To direct toward a particular point and purpose: "focused all their attention on finding a solution to the problem."

one focus all their attention on finding future in the past? missing the present?

so one have faith in fantastical explanations for the unproven, the unknown and the unknowable?
