carboxylic acids to cyclic esters

anyone know how to take a carboyxlic acid and make it a cyclic ester? I am aware of the method used for making a hydroxy carboxylic acid to a cyclic ester, only I don't know how to make a carboyxlic acid into a hydroxy carboyxlic acid.

would love your help!

If you would take say butyric acid and halogenate it it would all clutter right behind the COOH head and not at the CH3 tail.

The trick in chemistry is to take a precursor that's activated in the desired location and change it into the shit you want, and every step of the way is performed with chems with freakish impurities yielding weird-ass side reactions and at cleanup you end up with three percent of X-Files in your flask that'll pop some stoppers and make you the first one to try out the new classroom chem shower.

Suppose you want to make Glycolic acid.. this is how you could go about it:

CH3COOH + Cl2 ---hurt!---> Cl-CH2COOH + HCl
Cl-CH2COOH + KOH ---fizz!---> HO-CH2COOH + KCl

If you have to -ask- how a basic kind of reaction is performed you come off like you are trying to fiddle with hardwarestore chems and end up with a primo quality drug, and that usually ends with people's organs swelling shut with cancer a few years after the fact.

I hope you're asking a theory chem question but it doesn't seem that way.
