A couple weeks ago I dropped some spores on a plate and WOW! I couldn't believe how fast and aggressive the Myc is!! Ariel and full on Rhizo with ropes all over. Its been 2 years since I've grown and so far this is a great way to pick things up again! Glad to be back!!

Hi!

It was some time ago since I grew these. Did some agar to grain 11 days ago and they have maybe grown 1/2". I did two more five days ago and the speed is about the same if not slower. Is this normal or am I just unlucky? I am quite sure that the mycelium is clean.

Should I perhaps start over again with spores?

Absolutely. I had jars of ochra colonizing in 8 days this summer, now it's 13+. I do have some shoeboxes pinning at 15 days but they're in a room that's still around 21C. I don't worry about these guys though, they just pull through and are so easy I usually  do a one-and-done flush. Too many jars.

Thanks for the responses!

I think I just have some bad genetics because my room is 21-24 degrees. Sent some spores from a print I took from some ochras that I grew in my garden, let's see if they can catch up

When is the right time to harvest ochras?

Iโ€™d take them soon. Once they start dropping spores they keep dropping them.

First time dealing with ochras. This is a shoebox, 1L spawn 3L sub 0.5L top layer, that is just reaching full colonization. From my experience dealing with yellow umbo, if the surface went in this direction (thick, vigorous myc) it tended to somewhat overlay and needed a casing layer. Up untill now, this ochra is behaving very similar to YU; very vigorous myc, and very fast colonization (this is day 5) with very similar surface behaviour.

To case or not?

Not yet IMO. If it's an unmodified shoebox with the lid closed, my never-overlayed-ever ochras still get to about that point in terms of fuzz, but don't actually overlay.

You could always case half and see

No it's a modified dub tub with holes on the upper tub. So plenty of fae from day onw.

Ok so you're saying your's looks app the same and never overlays ... Does it look like this at the first day of 100%?

Even before 100%

It sorta unfluffed itself later. The temps got too high and it got a bit sad, but still put out a solid flush or two with no overlay.

Here's another one from that batch. Opened fluffy, got sad (but the new growth at the edge was still almost too solid looking) and ultimately did fine with no overlay.

How much weight do you average per 1L of spawn? I see you also run it in shoeboxes huh

I just spawned another shoebox but this one P9 stile with a 1.5" CV top layer, I'll report what happens to both of em.

I'd be happy with ~300 off 600ml spawn (500g/L), but I don't push for later flushes or try to squeeze every drop out. Those numbers could definitely be improved.

Two pint jars worth in a shoebox, my cakes are often on the thin side, bad habit from using small jars.
