Psilocybe Caerulipes Thread * 10

Welcome, I just wanted to make a dedicated thread to Psilocybe Caerulipes so that it is easier for folks to find information on this species in the future. I have come across a handful of users who are attempting to cultivate this species so hopefully we can all come together here and collaborate.

There is a serious lack of knowledge when it comes to the cultivation of this species. I have personally been working with a spore print from the Adirondack Region of NY. So far I have found that this mycelium loves whole brown rice. It colonizes a quart jar in approximately a week when using LC. This is the only real progress I have made with Caerulipes. I currently have some mycelium growing in a tub on 80% HWFP 10% HWC 10% Bran. It is a very fine Myc almost like lions mane except it has a very slight blue color to it.



I think this has the potential to be an indoor fruiting woodlover based upon the season its found outdoors. I do not think the sawdust is a good substrate for these guys after seeing how this tub looks. I will be doing more experiments with different subs in the coming months.

If you have tried cultivating this species please share your findings! I'm not extremely active on here but I will get back to you.

I couldn't get any to try back when, but as I understood them then, they are more of a mixed media mushroom

We don't necessarily put rotted twigs and half rotted leaves in Cyan jars, but when you go to the patch you see some grown all over them?

Because that patch looks like it ran for the money? but I can't tell you what will work. I just know I'd be trying to add some "forest floor" in little bitty bits and pieces to at least part of it, to see if it doesn't start crawling on it and want a fruit off of it?

But yeah the first thing is really the only point I had to make is agreeing that I don't think wood by itself makes 'em happy as they need to be and I was thinking soil and twigs, but haven't done it.

Tends to like (this is a nod to curenado's above point) duff and soil mixed with chips more than anything, honestly (box pictured @~90%).  I had it colonizing just coir also until that particular box got infested with fungal gnats...  Ran slower, but it jumped onto it just fine and was @ 50% before it became a garden ornament).

Colonizes oats just fine, and I intend to try WBR again just to test what you said about it given that it should work just fine.  (That said, I've tried caerulorhiza twice on WBR and it seems to actually prefer oats - so there are exceptions to every rule...).
I'll put some agar pics up when I get a chance.  Nice idea on the thread :thumbup:. I have a box buried outside now and another outdoors in high 40s-60s (f) that's a couple months old.  Running more spawn soon, but recovering from some nasty infection.  Will try a few different spawn mediums at that point.  Sample sizes are just too small.

What do you mean by Duff? is that a term for forrest floor matter? I also think the LC had a big play in the colonization time of the rice. Going well with agar too just not as fast.

Yes decomposing forest floor matter :thumbup:. Yeah the culture selection seems to play a big roll with this species.  I have had a couple plates present late-stage contaminants I'd missed in observation, so I steered away from LC as I do with semilanceata.  Will try WBR again soon actually and also some woodchips/duff/soil bottle mix.  Maybe some dowels...

I've actually had the same issue with what I think is a bacterial contam. It shows up like 3-4 weeks after transfer. But I just made up some bags last night with a range of different "dead" stuff. I have a jar ready to spawn will update again soon.

So I may have either isolated a really strong culture with these guys or be culturing something else that closely resembles mushroom mycelium. Have any of you had a culture grow this thick? looks alot different from the ones I have worked in the past, was a grain to agar transfer from one that was forgotten in the bottom of a jar.

That looks sus tbh.  My germ plates were a little thick l/cottony when they consolidated, but didn't look like that.  Never know though.  I'd do a couple transfers and just observe the resulting cultures.

Ha!  I was just coming back on to say: one of my favorite tricks with exotics and weird cube myc now is to heat my scalpel up and sink it into the myc and give it a quick whiff.  I just take it right to the hand hole of my box.  If I contaminate it - it doesn't matter.  I can just snag a new transfer and work forward at least.

I crack open the deli containers and just stick my nose to the edge & sniff haha.

If it is some kind of contam would it not smell like the normal "mushroom" odor?

I took a few cuts off and put them to new plates so hopefully it looks a little more normal. I thought it was just because I put a few grains on there at first and it kinda grew over itself but I can't help but second guess myself with any of the exotics stuff in general.

Well..Mold smells moldy πŸ˜†, trich I think smells similar.
I’ve even had some contam that smelled kinda like anise/licorice.
Whatever the fuck that shit was, it was a deep reddish, and trich is green (but white at first)-so I would assume your biggest concern with be mold if anything.
I can’t say what exotics smell like, haven’t sniffed my zap plates just yet haha ( except the moldy one)
If it’s anything other than mushroomy, even a weird mushroomy, be suspicious.
