Official Panaeolus sp. IND01 thread - an undescribed Copelandia from India * 24
    #29513489 -

iNaturalist Observation

This undescribed species was found in India in 2023.  And last fall, a print made it into Pheno's hands.  I got a culture going, but my first run aborted on cased popcorn with grass.

My second did better, but I struggled to get much in the way of prints.

But now I have a few jars going that are doing much better.  And have started getting them out into the community.

The species has been sequenced, and it appears to have split off from cyanescens and bisporus prior to them splitting off from each other.  Below is a tree I put together using NCBI blast.  And IND01 is the third one from the top, just under the two mexicanus sequences (which is also a species of Copelandia, though not one in circulation).

For anyone curious about the microscopy, I've covered the species here in an advanced mycology thread on Copelandia.

But here we grow mushrooms!  And since it's quite a bit distant from most of the Copelandia grown in the other official thread, and possibly has distinct preferences in regard to temperature and humidity, I figured I would get a seperate thread going.

Mycelium - 0.5% MEA

Fruit Bodies

Cyan size comparison

About the red sweat
This might be antibacterial.  I observed it under the microscope and saw very little movement.  I also took an exterior tissue sample to 0.5% MEA.  I imagine if I did this with cyans or bisporus this plate would be swimming in bacteria.

Potency
I've only bioassayed 0.25g so far.  But the potency is on point for the subgenus or possibly on the high side.

Other interesting observations
The tissue is much denser than cyans.  And the fruit bodies dried down to 10%.  Which is about double cyans and bisporus in my experience.

The caps can also take awhile to drop spores and lose very little moisture when they do.  To get them to print well I've taken two sterile swabs, dripped RO water on them, and placed them in a meal prep container.  I covered the gas exchange holes to keep the humidity in.

These caps made six prints over the course of 48 hours.  This is them along with some stipes from a different jar before they went into the dehydrator.

The spores prints have so far been brown or black.  My first grow was brown, but I only managed to get a few prints off them.  Most of the fruits in this OP are all the descendents of the brown spored culture, as are the swabs and prints I'm sending out.  So, it's likely to crop back up assuming it wasn't environmental.  This was the brown spored culture, on cased popcorn.

Early Cultivation Observations
Note I've only grown these twice with success.  But, they're getting better every time.

I'm using a nitrogen based substrate.  Whatever works for bisporus and cyans I believe will work well for these.

I don't mist the pins or fruit bodies.  Similar to cyans they tend to abort.  I do case thicker, like bisporus.  And had to add more casing to a thin cyan style casing to get the chunky fruits pictured above.  I'm not sure yet if letting the casing colonize much is wise.  As the mycelium is a bit denser than bisporus.  But, I plan to case thick, and let colonize some, on my next run.

I am side watering, and carefully hydrating the casing to keep the pins from aborting.  Even though they're less water weight than cyans, they still like a lot of water.  Though a lot of it they apparently sweat out

Also they seem to like it a bit cooler.  And are fruiting well in the low to mid 70s.  When I had the temperature in the high 70s and close to 80, they didn't seem to like it much.  I'm running my humidity on the high end (mid 90s) and doing one fresh air exchange every two hours (3 minutes on my fan, which is enough to drop the humidity down to the mid 80s and kick the fogger on).

Pins slower than cyans, but not as slow as bisporus.  And a bit slower to mature than either.  But not slow by psilocybe metrics.

I imagine they'd do well though in a low tek set up.

Marketplace thread.

Super cool TF! I'm always amazed by your ability to observe, compile, and relay information.

I can't wait to see everyone's grows!

I started getting swabs out Monday.

And I am also really looking forward to seeing what other folks can do with them.  The guy that gifted the initial print grew them with grass, and it looked like a canopy of fat cinctulis.

I have the photo uploaded, but I don't want to share in public since I didn't ask for permission

It's worth noting that the red sweat is observable in the iNat photos and has been consistent across my projects.

I was quite suspicious of it at first.

We also had a discussion about it in the miscellaneous exotics thread earlier this week.  The technical term for it is guttation.

wow crazy with the read (antibacterial) sweat. Fomitopsis does something similar.

Thanks for sharing!

Have eight containers colonizing with three separate cultures, and planning to do some casing FAFO.

Regular bisporus style casing* (control).  Thick casing (1/2").  Control plus rinsed uncharged biochar.  A thick version of the last casing.  Control plus rinsed charged biochar (inoculated with Azo bacteria and liquid nutrients).  Control plus grass dusted with Azo.  Control plus a Japanese brassica dusted with Azo.  Control plus leaf litter (pasteurized).

Should give me some data to play with anyway before doing a proper experiment with a clone

*2:1 peat:calcium carbonate by dry weight.  Handful of worm castings per dry qt of peat.  About 1/4" thick.

The spots are a little intimidating.
Very cool visually though.

Yeah, they are

I was seeing them a lot on my test dose and at peace with them.  Like the spotted shrooms were drawing out negative energy.  Then on the comedown I was smoking weed and saw the red dotted mushrooms behind my eye lids.

The fear got into me for a bit

Anyway, I didn't die and feel fine.  Also tried some last week off a stipe.  Tasted like iron, mushrooms, and water

And I scoped it.  No movement indicating bacteria.

20*10*4

20*40*4

The shiny dot in the bottom middle was drifting, but not exactly moving.  Otherwise very little motion.

Yeah.

The trip was really visual too for such a small dose (0.25g).  Not like three-dimensional OEVs or anything.

But not only was I surprised that I didn't die, I was also surprised how vivid the morphing violet with red dropped mushrooms were in my CEVs.

I smoke weed daily too, so my mind's eye is kind of desensitized.

Granted, I didn't get scared until the come down so I was able to relax.. and I've been staring at them and taking photographs for over a week. So I'm not surprised they showed up.
