Learning BRF cake (prepare for war) * 6

PREP FOR CAKE WARS III - STARTS SEPT 1st! JOIN IN!

CAKE WARS III SIGN UP TODAY!!

First, thanks to Arkyhog and flapping_bird for their contributions to Cake Wars. What ultimately made me decide to start this log and learn these techniques.

TEK  Updated PF Tek guide

I’ve only done bulk grows. But my logic for finally learning BRF is

1) Clone grows are more consistent
2) going through bulk to clone process is just too annoying
3) cloning from BRF should speed it up and even make agar work easier/faster

This log will follow BRF and Cake Wars III grow. Once I clone, I will make a separate log for each phenotype.

Clone Logs
Yeti Clone Grow
Iceberg Clone
SNAPE failed BRF grow, genetic recovery log
Galactic Gorilla Clone

In anticipation of Cake Wars III, I wanna make sure I’m able to make spore syringes from swabs as I’m an albino lover.

So here we go.

5/22 and 5/23

Cakes made using standard 2:1:1 mix. Running with half pint jars.

For syringes I boiled distilled and purged a couple times. Let cool. Lightly wiped swab in seperate glass. Put tip of swab in sterile plastic tube to shake swab around To loosen spores.

Here’s the set up.

The phenotypes

Yeti

Iceberg

Starry Night Apes

Galactic gorilla

5/30

So a week later

Yeti

Iceberg

Galactic Gotilla

Not seeing anything with SNAPE yet.

Not surprised Yeti is taking off as they were fresh swabs. But growth on Iceberg and GG is good to know the swab making works.

I’ll give SNAPE a little more time before I try again.

5/31

Update for transparency purposes.

I had some time and extra jars and BRF so I prepped 4 more jars. Made a slurry to get a little more available SNAPE.

Only had enough to make 3 more SNAPE. But had a Wikidzon syringe I figured I would see if it was still viable so YOLO!!

6/1

We lost a soldier today.

.

One GG down. The other one is working. Who knows where the contamination came from. I’m not horribly worried in all honesty. The other GG is working out fine.

And this yeti cake is having itself a field day. So the swab making seems to be good.

6:6

Yeti

Iceberg

These two are doing fine. But both GG crashes out and SNAPE ain’t doing shit.

Also learned I was injecting wrong after thinking it through. I was just putting needle in hole. I was penetrating dry Verm.

So I will try SNAPE, TWAPE and ABV cakes and let er rip.

6/14

Yeti 4 weeks (inoculated wrong)

Iceberg 4 weeks (inoculated wrong)

ABV 1 week

GG 1 week

SNAPE 1 week

TWAPE not active yet after 1 week

6/20

Get to start dunk and roll today!!

Got one Yeti and Iceberg that have sat well and completed.

As far the ones I did properly. Pretty happy. The ABV is going.

GG is going. One of the smaller areas

And SNAPE

TWAPE has decided it’s not gonna do anything. I’ll decide later if I pull it out again and try again or just wait for CW3. Was intending to grow these all out with clones and then once CW3 was over pack up for a long while. But meh. We shall see.

6/21

Two all set!

6/23

Well. Yeti already pinning. Crap. Don’t have agar ready.

6/26

5 days after birth and I have a yeti clone candidate already!!

7/11

So the Galactic Gorilla cake is pinning nicely. So the technique has gotten better.

At this point the learning curve part of this log is pretty much done. Might not see any updates until CW3 kicks off.

7/13

As an update with this log, the SNAPE log was started from a failed BRF cake that I scrapped some mycelium from in an attempt to save the grow. So happy with it I’m going to apply it to the TWAPE as they have been unable to cross the finish line.

Another personal opinion. I think doing pf teks to go from f1 to f8 selecting could be essentially 2x quicker or more doin pf teks less time than spawning to sub n waiting for sub to colonize (in my opinion)

This is a great idea! I had the same feelings during this cake wars as well. I joined jusssst a bit too late to try and squeeze it in. It's the "from spore" that did me in on timing.

Never done a PF either. Gonna try and follow along. Excited to see your progress!

Love this! I just PC’d my first pair of BRF cakes the other day. I’m battling contam with my digital PC so I ran three different grains, including the BRF. I had to make my own BRF because none of the stores around me had any. Thanks the gods I own an old school vitamix that I’m betting could grind bone up.

I’m starting to get into genetics work, I’d like to eventually work my way up to crosses. Have to start slow first. BRFs seem like one of the easier ways to get genetics moving quickly and without aiming for bulk.

Yup. It seems like it’s a logical step. The BRF cakes are gonna take 2 weeks at least for germination and that’s what swabbing takes it seems like for a T1.

Yay!

My oldest kid was graduating so wasn’t sure when/if I could get things going. Assuming I could just start back up during CWIII.

But she landed a job out where her college is and we have done most of everything to keep her advancing in life other than moving her out of dorm into apartment so might as well get this part going.  Lol

And thanks!!

God speed on your genetics work!!

I don’t know if I ever have the patience for that. Lol

Yup. And I didn’t do that with any of the original 4. So it’s amazing yeti and iceberg are moving along.

Newb mistake. Minimal resources lost.

Hahaha sounds like it I'm pretty hands on learning lol so I do better if I run into some problems along the way otherwise I don't know why it succeeded or why it failed 🤣💀 I just gotta make sure I writ down my findings 😊 lwk for me it's the journey not the destination  n nice looking cakes

Personally I like to press the slanted opening of the syringe square against the glass, that way I get maximum spread of the inoculant as it squirts everywhere

And now im a monitor lizard
