"Anti-Zionism is Antisemetism." * 4

Palestinians are more Semitic than the mostly European descended citizens of the American colony of Israel. Seems like Israelis are the real Antisemites

Maybe instead of bombing them, they should be marrying them.

Whenever someone calls themselves anti-Zionist I know that they don't really understand what Zionism is. It's such a broad ideology and people who decry it tend to hyperfocus on only certain aspects about it that are being fed to them via the media they consume.|

The reason some think anti-Zionism = anti-Semitism is because they better understand the broadness of this ideology and have made snap judgements about the people who espouse it.

I don't think most self-described anti-Zionists are bigots, but prior to the outbreak of this war that was very different. Hitler decried Zionism. Neo-Nazis decried Zionism. So when (mostly) progressives adopt the languages of these Nazis, is it any surprise that there are some who are unwilling to dig through personal nuance to discover the truth?

I think discussion will be better if we stop using over-generalized terms without understanding what they mean to the people who self-identify with those labels. It's this kind of political rhetoric that keeps people who actually agree on solutions from seeing each other as allies. Whatever prescriptive linguistic argument someone wants to give pales in comparison to the importance of seeking solutions.

I'll give fictional examples:

Bob is a Zionist. Bob believes all Palestinians should be put to death and the land taken over by Israelis.

Andy is a Zionist. Andy believes in a two state solution and doesn't want to see Israel dissolved, as he believes the state should exist even if he doesn't like what the government of Israel is doing.

Jimmy is an anti-Zionist. He has '888' tattooed on his forehead and just submitted a Klan application.

George is an anti-Zionist. He is opposed to the atrocities Israel is committing and wants peace. He believes in a two state solution. He doesn't have a problem with Israel, he has a problem with the government.

Notice how Andy and George self-identify differently but believe in the same solution? And yet, they may see each other as enemies regardless due to the terminology they choose to use. Decry one side as illogical if you want, get into the semantics of it, but what good does it do? What change does it lead to?

This is why I generally try to stay away from political labels when defining myself. You don't want to be associated with something you're not. A good philosophical argument begins with defining the terms its using so that there's no confusion and ideas can be debated on their own merits.

The idea that you're going to reason with people to come to understanding is wildly optimistic, though.  People are stupid.  People, for the most part, have neither the desire nor the ability to engage in nuanced discussions about any of that.  Navigating life in a complex society such as ours takes all of their focus and energy.  They want ideas prepackaged with clean labels and clean lines.

The role of politics is to create these packages and sell them to the public.

Sure, it would be amazing if we could all be free thinkers and rational actors working toward a common good.  Kumbayah and shit.  Humans aren't that species, though. We're not going to logic our way into skipping millions or billions of years of evolution necessary to get to that point. As a result, labels are important to corral the stupid masses into their groups so they aren't in the way of creating and maintaining a marginally functional society where we're not all killing each other.

Lofty ideas are cool.  Let's not confuse those with solutions, though.

True, but most philosophical arguments define terms once, and then quickly settle into the use of labels - because the former facilitates preciseness in communication, whereas the later facilitates ease of communication. The Buddhist label of 'the self' is better defined as 'the mind-body-complex, with all the implications of compound phenomena, interacting in a way to constitute an individual' - that's already a mouthful and I've still abbreviated much. It's important that people understand what 'the self' defines, but it's similarly important that I can refer to 'the self' as a contained concept in discussion.

To refer to your first post here, I think you've commited your own sin of hyper-focused labelling when you claim anti Zionism as "the languages of these Nazis". Hitler also wrote exhaustively about the Jewish problem, but I'm certain that you see the absurdity in suggesting that Jewishness is the language of Nazis. Zionism predates both Hitler and Nazism - it originated in the late 19th century, among secular Jews in Central Europe as an ethno-nationalist colonial movement - some of the earliest anti-Zionists were themselves European Jews. Yes, Zionism has since diverged into a half-dozen variations, they all still share the same ethno-nationalist colonial roots. This is not a Nazi fabrication.

Let's examine your Andy and George example now. Yes, we can certainly see how moving beyond labels, we can identify these two seemingly have more in common with each other than their fellow Zionist/anti-Zionist - but I think that going beyond political rhetoric, and examining peoples actions gives even more insight. Did Andy serve in the IOF, or did he refuse? Does Andy defend the IOF as the 'most moral army' forced into killing civilians because of Hamas? Does Andy deny that a genocide is occurring in Palestine? Does Andy continue to benefit from the Israeli institutions that oppress Palestinians? If his rhetoric aligns him with George, but his actions align him with Bob - is it incorrect to group Bob and Andy together?

I wasn't calling it exclusively a Nazi term and I even gave an opinion which shows this is not what I think. I was commenting on the conflation people make with non-antisemitic anti-Zionists.

I'm not interested in discussing the history of Zionism. This is a typical reasoning people give for self-labeling as anti-Zionist and it doesn't change the conflation you'll face as a result of your self-labeling.

You think going beyond political rhetoric and focusing on actions gives more insight?

Friend... that's like, the entire point of my post.

The way people conduct themselves absolutely influences society. It re-frames public discussion.

I'm not saying the language itself is the solution, I'm advocating for solution-focused discussion over semantic discussion and political labeling gets in the way of that.

What I'm more focused on is self-conduct and self-identity since you can only ever control yourself, though you can ABSOLUTELY change people's minds with a good argument, and I have done so many times. Even on this issue of Zionism.

This is a politics forum so I mean... I'm going to talk about these things. I don't see the point in focusing on misanthropy in a political discussion. If I were to adopt that attitude, I wouldn't engage with politics at all.

Okay, but if, when commenting on this conflation, you frame it as 'self-labeled anti-Zionists don't understand the ideology' and 'others think anti-Zionism = anti-Semitism because they better understand the ideology' - this is making a value judgment that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism - why else would better understanding lead to that conclusion?

If that wasn't your intent, what are we left with? 'Self-labeling as anti-Zionist will result in your conflation with anti-Semitism' - likely true, but I think we can go further - bad faith political opponents don't even require the self-labeling. Take the use of communism as a perjorative in US political rhetoric - it's used widely against milquetoast Democrats who have never even come close to self-labeling as such. Clearly, avoiding self-labeling isn't sufficient to prevent this - and avoiding all labels is itself a limitation on political discussion - so where does that leave us?

Use labels that you deem appropriate, take the time to ensure that labels are similarly defined before getting into a political debate, but also, don't base your language on the criticism of bad faith opponents. Anti-Zionist is an appropriate term, and I'm willing to take the time to educate others on its meaning, but I'm not willing to cater to criticism that I feel has no merit.

To touch back on the George and Andy example - your example went beyond labels, but still limited itself to rhetoric in order to highlight how George and Andy, despite different labels, hold similar beliefs - but your example falls apart when we move to action instead. Removing labels didn't suddenly turn Andy into an ally. How will dropping my self-labeling of anti-Zionists help me find common ground?

I didn't say self-labeled anti-Zionists don't understand since there are varying levels of understanding. I'm also not saying that those who make the conflation of anti-Zionism = anti-Semitism are holistically correct, it's just that they have a better, not perfect, understanding of the philosophy than your typical progressive anti-Zionist who mostly focuses on history rather than history + trends.

I don't think this is relevant. Of course you will never be able to communicate 100% perfectly, and there will always be bad faith actors, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't make an attempt to use more communicative and inclusive language. Again, I'm not proposing this as a solution, but as a way of conduct that moves us closer towards solidarity, which can lead to better solutions depending on the circumstances.

Yeah but we're not just talking about bad-faith actors here, we're also talking about ignorance. If you're only willing to use "your" language and not meet people in the middle, I personally think that is bad faith. I don't care much for those types of prescriptive arguments honestly.

I think you're missing the point of my posts. Dropping the self-labeling will help you escape tribalistic language that can, in some instances, prevent good from happening.

Drop the self-labeling of anti-Zionism and you'll no longer be called an antisemite by confused people. You'll no longer push them away. You can focus on other language/topics instead of giving/receiving hate based on semantics. Like, I don't know, maybe criticizing the government instead of criticizing the general support for the state of Israel as an idea? This way people know exactly what you think, and not what they think you think.

Kinda reminds me of this one alien race in a old kids book series I read--they threaten to promote one of the protagonists to captain of the spaceship. After some confusion, they show the protagonists the captain, who is very clearly dead and crucified to the Captain's chair.

That way, the captain can make no bad decisions.

I'm American so not much choice lol.

I choose the party/candidate that more closely aligns with my morals and goals. The lesser evil.

Usually they are Democrats but I have voted for a few independents here and there.

Definitely a few issues I care more about than others, but I don't want to get too off topic here.

You didn't say this? "Whenever someone calls themselves anti-Zionist I know that they don't really understand what Zionism is." I'm confused now, because that's a direct quote. Let's go all the way back and define some things: do you think anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism? Before we get into the discussion about conflation and labels, because your initial post seemingly implied as much with the framing around 'better understanding'. Futhermore, can you explain these trends (history + trends) that reveal anti-Zionism is better understood as anti-Semitism? It might help me understand your confusing use of labels here.

I'm more than willing to meet people in the middle, in terms of adopting different language if it helps to better explain something - I don't just keep repeating 'anti-Zionism isn't anti-Semitism' - that should be sufficient for those who are merely ignorant. But it's wrong to pretend that bad faith accusations of anti-Semitism aren't a widely used rhetorical defence of the Israeli state. "Drop the self-labeling of anti-Zionism and you'll no longer be called an antisemite by confused people" is blatantly false, when activists who avoid the use of anti-Zionism are still met with accusations of anti-Semitism. For example, children's entertainer Ms. Rachel has never self-indentified as an anti-Zionist (as far as I'm aware) but her advocacy for Palestinian children still had her named as a finalist for StopAntisemitism's "Antisemite of the Year".

This bad faith weaponization of anti-Semitism is, imo, the predominant motivation behind conflating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism - not well-intended ignorance - and can't be separated from discussion. I've yet to see an argument put forth that identifies anti-Zionism as anti-Semitic (maybe you'll do this when explaining those trends you mentioned) - and until that point, I won't adjust my own language to cater to something I consider both unreasonable and bad intentioned. I'll take the time to discuss an issue beyond surface level labels, I'll avoid prejudging others based solely on surface level labels - but I won't adjust my language in response to bad faith rhetoric.

I said this in the context of the OP's title. Anti-Zionists are a wide group of people and I'm talking about a specific subsection, the 'progressive, left-leaning, anti-war anti-Zionists' and the confusions they make that lead to them being labeled as antisemitic.

No, I don't think anti-Zionism is inherently antisemitic. I do think there are many antisemitic anti-Zionists, namely neo-Nazis and the like. The 'progressive anti-Zionists' adopted this language and yet think it unfair when they are grouped together, while they themselves unfairly group many kinds of self-described Zionists together. The trends changed. People's interpretations didn't.

The problem is this: Zionism is a very general term. The only definition that really applies to all definitions is that it's the desire for an Israeli state. It's Israeli nationalism. Aligning yourself as either Zionist or anti-Zionist is problematic for this reason.

Quote:

I don't know why you keep bringing up bad faith interpretations. I can't help anyone who is in a debate with a bad faith actor. I'm talking about conversations between people who are willing to at least hear each other out. The problems I'm outlining have nothing to do with bad faith interpretations, though I agree, it's problematic.

I think the way Ms. Rachel does it is the way to go. Avoid labels, promote policy (and love for children). She's fairly popular as a result. Of course, there are people who dislike her, but what else can she do? Should she adopt the anti-Zionist label and push folks away?

Quote:

Have you ever heard of Hanlon's Razor? "Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence."

The argument is simple: (and keep in mind this isn't my view) Zionism means desire for an Israeli state. Therefore anti-Zionism means you don't want an Israeli state.

This is certainly the case for Hamas, who wants to destroy Israel.

It's just not the case for most, say, American 'progressives.'

But how does one learn the nuance? Well, you must read, watch, talk to people, etc. But people live in bubbles. So if you only get fed the air within your own bubble, how will you know what the air outside of it tastes like? How can you even form an opinion on it when you haven't been presented the knowledge?

Most people work a lot, have personal relationships, chores, hobbies, etc. There isn't much space for political science in most people's lives. So it's important to use terminology that gets past this educational and experiential barrier and points to the crux of the problem, not the symptoms of it.

Otherwise, not only will you have to deal with bad faith actors, but you'll have to deal with the under-informed too.

Obviously you shouldn't even engage with bad faith actors. But assuming everyone who makes a certain argument is 'bad faith' is not a good mindset IMO. I try to find out *why* they make the argument first, because in my experience there are a lot more confused and ignorant people than there are bad faith actors.

Most of the bad faith IMO comes from propaganda. News, social media, etc. Not so much individuals, unless you get a really spicy asshole or something. But again, not worth engaging with if that's the case.

I keep bringing up bad faith interpretations because it's an inseparable aspect of this discussion - going all the way up to rhetoric utilized by the state of Israel itself, this bad faith framing between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism is unavoidably present. You can't just remove that part, and propose a solution that assumes it doesn't exist. I'm particularly confused why the Ms. Rachel example didn't highlight this for you - she's doing what you're suggesting, and still was labelled anti-Semitic for her advocacy - clearly this illustrates that your suggestion is not sufficient. Should she adopt the anti-Zionist label and push folks away? Well, I think that's on you to demonstrate that her self-labeling as anti-Zionist would push more people away than the bad faith labeling of anti-Semitic by her political opponents already did. The main reason you've given as to why we should avoid self-identifying as anti-Zionist is because it will lead to conflation with anti-Semitism - but if that conflation happens regardless, I don't see the benefit. You're assumption is that the opponent is acting in good faith, so that the simple move of adopting alternative language is a viable solution - but if the opponent is acting in bad faith, there is no alternative language that will avoid this accusation, and instead you fall into a pattern of constant retreat from the language used to criticize. Yes, I'm aware of Hanlon's Razor - I'm also aware that platitudes aren't tautologies.

Looking at your general definition of Zionism, I would ask this: is there any variety of Zionism that isn't accurately described as an ethnocultural nationalist colonial movement? Because I would argue that 'Israeli nationalism' is an oversimplification that obfuscates the reality of it's establishment. Significant because, if I'm correct, you're describing people with an insufficient understanding of Zionism - if these are good faith individuals, why wouldn't educating them about Zionism be a better option than retreating from the label?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you in principle. Stick around here long enough, and you'll see that I approach people as individuals rather than a collection of labels - I will patiently explain the ideologies I identify with - I'll adjust my rhetoric to the discussion - I won't turn political labels into my personal identity - but I won't avoid the use of Zionism in my critiques of the state of Israel. It's an accurate label - even you haven't explicitly outlined these trends that turned anti-Zionism towards anti-Semitism. All you said was that progressive anti-Zionists adopted this language from who? Neo-Nazis? Blatantly untrue - anti-Zionist rhetoric has been present among far more than neo-Nazis for decades - social media and the genocide finally brought it into the mainstream, that's all. On the other hand, if all types of Zionism can be definied as an 'ethnocultural nationalist colonial movement', is it really unfair when they are grouped together? Unless I can see an argument that demonstrates anti-Zionism as anti-Semitism, all I have is the collection of Israeli propaganda that unfairly conflates the two - I won't assume that everyone has the same definition of Zionism, but I certainly won't allow what I deem to be bad faith state propaganda to dictate the language I use.
