yeah it's not a true elm it's just labeled as that from the mycelium emporium but i believe even they have a warning on there about it

i misremembered it's that it's labeled as Pleurotus ulmarius on the emporium and when i searched up what it was all that came up was Hypsizygus ulmarius

But then I also read there were supposed commercial strains of Elm Oyster that appear more like a regular oyster

It's confusing to me so I got mixed up

This is labeled as Snow White Oyster on the Emporium I just got my wires crossed

Today I'm taking a crack at using alfalfa pellets in place of soy hulls for a lion's mane grow. I based my ratios off of this dude's post so wherever you are, thanks:

Soy hull alternatives

I'm using some smaller sized unicorn bags, I staged a quart jar in the photo for scale.

My ratio is 300g HWFP: 100g alfalfa pellets: 600g h2o it seemed like based on the little research I've done, it's better to go light on the alfalfa so that what I aimed for.

Let me know if you have any experience with using alfalfa instead of soy hulls for your "masters mix", I'm trying to learn!

I used alfalfa once, I think at 20% by dry weight. I still have the bag...unfortunately I couldn't tolerate the dust, which made me sneeze and had my eyes red and puffy for days. (Even the odors from pressure cooking it bothered me for days. Not sure what I am allergic too but it was really unpleasant.) The mushrooms liked it fine, though I didn't use it enough to get a fair comparison with wheat bran, which is the only supplement I've used consistently.

Hope it works for you! I wish it had for me - it's super cheap and available here.

Hell yeah. What's your ratio for HWFP to wheat bran? Would like to try it out and compare the grows.

Usually 20% of total dry weight. I did 30% a couple times, but I can't remember if it was noticeably better, and I wasn't really keeping records. And then some life stuff happened last summer and I haven't had my gourmet tent setup going since. Hoping to get it back up in the next month or two.

For shiitake, I haven't tried more than 20%, since I read it tends to push out mutated fruits with higher supplementation and/or spawn ratios, and it takes so long to mature, I wasn't willing to risk more. And 20% bran does ok for me there, little under a pound per 5lb block first flush, even with low-tech (basically monotub) fruiting chambers.

I bought some beet pulp pellets to try. The one batch of bags I made with it (again at 20%) failed to even colonize, but I don't even remember what I tried on it. I suspect any oyster would eat it anyway. Going to need to try that again this year, maybe with varying ratios in case 20% is just too much.

What do you like to grow?

I do a lot of cubes. Second to that is lion's mane then oysters then shiitake. Been wanting to take another crack at cordyceps mili but from what I've read its very fickle and the yeilds are discouraging unless you're growing on a commercial scale. I take lion's mane and cordy everyday and everybody is asking me for it lately..

Up until now I've been using masters mix from mushroom media online and it's been fine for me but I figured it's time to experiment with what's locally available rather than ordering more expensive option.

Still not convinced it isn't a mold but one of my yellow morel trays appears to be pinning at 55-60f after about 2 months

These are tiny oyster mushrooms. The first growth from the clone I made in the fall from wild oyster mushrooms found in the forest. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the conditions or if it's just rich genetic diversity, but either way, I think it's beautiful.

A couple of 5lb blocks fruiting Lions Mane in Dreamer tubs. The two in the front on each tub are cloned from a wild mushroom I harvested during deer season.
