In 2010 my boss told me you had to ask for extra pickles or no pickles to get them to make your sandwich fresh, but I think he was thinking of the 90s cause I'm pretty sure in 2010 they made every sandwich fresh

Your boss was right. They have a set of sandwiches waiting for people to order them so they can just shove them in a bag and put them in your hand. If you have any effort required, then that line of premade sandwiches can’t be used. You got a fresh sandwich.
