Put the verm on dry and then mist. I'd honestly use pasteurized cactus soil over verm though in the future. I used both and the cactus soil just performed so much better. It's perfectly possible that it was just me execution, but both verm shoeboxes performed the same, which they still gave me a good amount, but the cactus soil casing layer definitely did better every time so far

I would just use an actual 6qt sterlite tub, and eventually dubtub it. I also use a trash bag to line it. Couldn't tell ya if I'm getting side pins, but I doubt it with all that I'm getting on the surface, plus it's easier to clean in the end. Lol idk I think the cakes are cool but I had no luck with them

I've seen som stellar tubs by 9 with just verm, but I do have cactus soil, so you case with just cactus soil, no verm at all? At what temperature and how long do you maintain it after reaching core when pasteurizing?

Yeah Tao, keep those cakes coming. They're a delight to look at. My non-cube cakes never performed half as well as the average shit you post.
Kloakk, I cased mine when they were more or less 100%. The tub that's pinning now was cased the 15th and started looking like crap forming primordia three days later. Nine days after spawning, three days after casing, come to think of it, pretty fast for a slow species.

Have to add to that: it's 2/3 compost. The coir tub was spawned earlier, cased earlier, and is still chillin'.

Thanks for the insight, you cased with 100% verm right? If I remember correctly you've got coarse grade verm? I think mine is medium grade but that might not matter?

I have three 15qt tubs and two 5qt shoeboxes, so maybe just try both verm and pasteurized cactus soil and see what I get? Oh and I've read something about potency and manure substrate for semps, would love to see how you're tubs develop in the next weeks. I made 5 AIO jars today and one of them is getting semp wedge tomorrow :naughty:

I think the "slow" with semps is from pins to print :strokebeard:

Yup, 100% verm, but it was (size) fine. Coarse seems to be the best thing to go with, judging by this thread, but got mine from a friend.

I didn't compost manure, but hay / straw and leaf litter. So far the most striking difference seems to be that it colonized and pinned a lot faster than plain coir.

If this all ends well, I think I'll continue with AIO's or cakes. Have a 12 L and 2 8,5 L shoeboxes going atm, wtf am I going to do with all those shrooms. Still handing out the cubes from two LAGM shoeboxes.

All I do to pasteurize is get all the sticks and rocks out that I can, put it in a ziplock bag, moisten it, I don't measure anything just get it moist. Then I put it in the dehydrator flattened out at 158° for 4 hours. Hasn't failed me yet. I still give it a good direct misting after I put the casing layer down, not thick, really just enough to cover the surface, maybe a couple milimeters, and I pat it down lightly

But yeah just cactus soil, but like I said I still had decent success with verm, and it could have just been my technique. I know verm can work well, just cactus soil has done better for me

Yeah, I feel ya, but as was said by Thurman not long ago, and I can relate, I'm results driven, not fruit driven.. I have very few friends(by choice) and I probably never use near as much as I produce. Oh well, it's a lot of fun :awesomenod:

I'm not sure where I'll be in a year, but as long as nothing fucked up happens I'm growing shrooms, might be tubs, might be cakes, just enjoying the journey with this one, thanks again for your thoughts and time.

Thanks for sharing your method and experience, I appreciate it. I'm thinking that since I have both and several tubs I'll try both. Even tho my verm is medium grade it has a lot of fine grade. And my thought is that what we want to achieve with a verm casing is small pockets of perfect microclimate that will trigger pinning. Now coarse grade verm would be really good for that I presume. But hey, as mentioned, I am in no need for large amount of fruits so I'll do both and report back..

Thanks again my man

You mentioned your shoebox approach - if its anything more than just spawn to coir plus cactus soil casing, I'd love to hear about it. I plan to run shoeboxes once I've got the spawn ready to go. 🤙

It's only slow from pins to spores.  And that's a good spawn:pin time frame.

Did you let the Jar consolidate?

Have used  freshly opened bag of cactus soil without pasteurization,  stopped counting/lost track of ... number of flushes after 7.

It's about as simple as it gets. I do 1qt jar of grain, I bucket tek 1 brick of coir,2qts of verm, and 4qts of water. I don't measure the substrate, I just do the full jar of grain and enough substrate to get to about half an inch to 3/4in from the top of the 6qt tub, or even damn near full, I've done both with equal results, I mix it all together, I also use a liner. Then a thin casing layer with the substrate to cover the grains. Then I put the lid on and put it in my cupboard for two weeks. It'll be fully colonized at that point. The night before I usually pasteurize the cactus soil, then put a thin layer to cover all the white, give it a good direct misting to moisten the surface, then I just rest the lid on the tub. After that I just give a good direct misting every 24 hours as long as it doesn't look noticablely wet still. Once I have pins I dubtub it, and just put a strip of micropore tape across the back of the tubs to act as a hinge. Then just give a good misting daily until it's time to harvest

That's what I did, had a bunch so I experimented with both. Let me know how that medium verm does, I may have to try something besides fine in the future sometime. The verm was good for not producing any gnats, I will say that. After a few flushes I started getting gnats in the cactus soil. We'll see how my current tub does in that regard

So a unopened bag fruiting? Looks sparse at this stage.

Whats the composition of da nutrition, roughly?

Been lurking here for a while, figured I would share some preliminary results with yall.

Started with a spore print a over a year ago and put it on some agar, did a couple transfers and then forgot about them for many months. I came back to my cultures and found quite a few plins, ended up putting those straight to grain.

The grain was sterilized with an instant pot for about 4 hours. Some online sources say instant pots get to about 10-12 psi, definitely lower than ideal, but its worked well enough for ochras, cubes, and oysters.

At full colonization, the jars had some condensation, prolly slightly bacterial. I left them for ~3 months  after full colonization to get some travelling in (we could also pretend it was in order to let them consolidate). After consolidation the jars still had condensation but otherwise looked good enough.

I spawned them to two unmodded shoeboxes with one qt each, using coir under field capacity. I don't measure sub cause people seem to give a pretty wide range for what works, maybe a little over 1:1.5 with one box, and somewhere a little over 1:2 with the other. No compression, just leveled out the surface. They took their sweet time getting to 100% colonization, and after that I left them there for a little over a week before casing with a thin layer of fine vermiculite. They were very slow to pin, almost 5 weeks from casing.

The higher spawn to sub ratio pinned first and is looking amazing, they are growing so incredibly slowly its painful. Good practice in patience I guess. The lower spawn to sub ratio waited another week to pin, but im interested to see the difference in output over the long term.

I started misting every couple of days when I first saw pins while being unsure of the standard protocols. Kept meaning to look through this thread to find what people recommend but I didn't have Wi-Fi for a while.

I see lewdoja just recently recommended waiting until they're a half inch to start misting, I will probably keep my same regimen for now just so I don't shock them but pick up misting more often when they hit a half inch.

There’s a filter and some holes poked in it, but it’s just been constantly growing a handful at a time instead of typical flushes for some reason.

I’d guess there’s about half a quart of wbs from a spawn bag that had consolidated for a few months in there.
