Re: AGAR ENVY! (Anything and All things agar!) [Re: Phaethon]

I have some agar cultures that I'd like a 2nd opinion on, but I can't take clear pictures.

I've read this guide:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27726375#27726375

I find the information very informative, but I'm having issues putting it's suggestions into practice.

All of my light sources are on walls or the ceiling. I even tried borrowing my wife's phone and using the flashlight to illuminate it from the side.

Does anyone have any advice on how to achieve proper illumination? What are you guys using to illuminate from the side or even at all?

I'm using a S22 Ultra. I've tried food mode and manual zoom, but they're always blurry.

Any advice is appreciated.

Here is some pictures I took today so you know what I'm up against:

A back lit pic from the bottom helps too.

Are those petris? If not that may be the best you'll get.

Also an app that let's you change the ISO and exposure might help

I don’t have time to clean and re-use agar plates. I refuse to wrap plates. I tried no-pour and it was more trouble than I wanted. I use the Karat cups from Amazon. 2500 lids in pp5 were $40, the cups the same price. That’s 2500 functioning units at under 4 pennies apiece. I have about 5% contaminated and that to me is a fair trade-off for all the time and annoyance I’m sparing myself.
But that’s just me. Everybody seeks and eventually finds what works best for them :headbang:

Did FP+ T4 to T5's, this wil be my last transfer, if they still end up scalloping, I'm sending it to grain to see if I can get mushrooms and get prints and a clone, and go from there:strokebeard:

They're HG cups. The 2nd picture is one where I played with the camera settings, im still learning that part though. I just fiddled with it for a few minutes.

Those look great, puffaw on scalloping. Even growth, nothing sus.

For pics? I think every phone is different. Warmth and intensity of light, polarized/non polarized, darker or lighter background, 1 foot or 2 foot then zoomed....soo many variables that our cameras are just not good at accounting for because they're made for adolescents humans taking innane pictures...not the innane taking pics of adolescent mushrooms.

Were you using cheap media bottles? I've never had a problem with Pyrex bottles. Though I'm still a little paranoid and like to leave them on a rack for a few minutes at room temp before plunging them into the water bath. I've put bottles whose surface temperature according to an IR probe is 190 °F into a 125 °F bath many times without issue.

How much are you pouring that you need to sous vie it?  I just pour hot and let it cool in the hood.

You can also just pour when the agar is ALMOST luke warm. Shouldnt feel hot to the touch whatsoever. Dont have to be perfect temp. I get the desire to overcomplicate things, I do it too.

Thanks for replying, what about this one?

It looks OK when backlit, but is all puffy and 3d. I'm thinking that's a sign of bacteria. Variety is PESH

I use a sous vide more for being able to pour at my convenience, I can just let it sit there until I’m ready and don’t have to worry about it solidifying, or having to reheat it.

I second the sous vide. Last time I poured plates it was 2.5 liters with a couple breaks while 40 or so plates set up in front of the hood. I prefer to pour plates every few months. So doing 100 at a time, it pays to have a water bath holding the agar at a good ready to pour temp.

Do you have a grow light for your shrooms? That's what I use 6500k temp so nice and bright/white. Or maybe a really strong flashlight/headlamp?

I like to have the light fixed/mounted and move the plates until I like what I'm seeing then with the other hand use the phone from about a foot away and then click on the part that you want to focus on (the myc on agar) and hopefully that will help?

After focusing on a point you can adjust the brightness with the slider that pops up but I'd generally say leave that alone, you can adjust the brightness by moving the plate closer or further from the light and playing with the angle you're holding it. Then you can also move the phone closer or further based on how the photo is focusing.

I would also just stick to the default photo mode, I was using a gen 10 Samsung until recently and mostly used the default and have some great photos.

Hope this helps.

To add to this, I elevate a plate by putting it on a rack, then position a desk lamp (the bendy or adjustable kind) at table level and facing towards the plate. The aim is to get the light to hit the agar and not the reflective lid. It makes the myc look nicer when lit from an angle and it's easier for the camera to focus.

A cheap phone tripod holds the phone over the plate, pointed downwards. This helps to minimize reflection.

A couple of extra things, this works best when the room and table surface is dark. You can put a piece of black card or other material on the table under the plate/rack. This can cut down light spillage and might help focussing issues.
