Lumpy looks can be a sign of a competitor. I'd recommend taking transfers regardless - I think it's a lot easier, especially as a less experienced agar user, to "read" a plate started from a wedge instead of liquid that may have touched most of the plate.

Mold mycelium usually doesn't hide for long before it sporulates and turns your plate or grains different colors or shoots out little black pins. But bacterial spawn can lead to mold infections after non-sterile bulk inoculation due to the weakened mycelium on the grains not being able to defend against competitors.

Can you describe what you smell in the suspicious bulk substrate? How did the spawn look?

The two jars I used were visually alright and the fastest two of eight but very firm and not at all shake-able. Some of the others have visible divisions between colonized sections though and fainly different shades. Jars all have some condensation but I also loaded them on the wet side.

Smell first made me think of ripe mulch and I wondered if it was just the coir. It's gotten more distinctly "musty" and there's dark grey mycelium. Definitely could have been only bacteria to start and contamination at bulk but it's consistent and prominent on both shoeboxes. For a little while I worried I understerilized my grain but there were no signs of growth outside visible mycelium and that made me begin to suspect bad SAB technique or a contaminated syringe. The clean-looking jars actually put my mind at ease until I took them out and they were very firm, not at all as loosely connected as described in the healthy spawn descriptions.

The pic I added to my signature yesterday is one of them (although angled and lit to look better) and I have some more shots in posts in the daily pic thread.

I can absolutely believe a wedge makes it easier to read. The damp plates and the LC-based innoculations were not tidy at all. I'll make plans to continue these. It will be educational. I'm anxious to get results but I have enough material that I'm in no danger of running out so I need to convince myself to be patient with the mycelium.

First time messing with agar. Some plates I did a single drop in the middle and some like this one I did four drops to increase chances of something happening and use up my 10cc.

Obviously the green is no good. But it’s starting to clear up around the edges. Pan Bosporus (forced me into agar) Is it at all possible it could isolate the green and still spread out healthy so I can take from that?

are you referring to that tiny drop at the top?

do it now if ever, waiting till that trich turned green and sporated isn't helping

^ yes and it actually started off as a green dot. I’ll cut from the edges today and see if I can get it successfully transferred. It seems as if it’s trying to fight it. Maybe lol

Oh and actually no not the tiny drop at the top that’s part of the plastic. I’m referring to the bigger mostly green in the middle, but it’s greying on the edges. Makes me wonder if it could recover or not.

Yeah after realizing previous poster thought it was the plastic chip I was referring to I jumped back to that conclusion myself lol

I think you're looking at mold myc, if you're eyeing the outer, whitish edge of that green mass.

Probably so. Not at all what I wanted, but I’m honestly  happy to get some sort of growth. That gives me some hope haha

Thank you guys!

That's definitely not worth salvaging. I see nothing growing but foreign unwanted mold. That's what agar is for though so just trash it and start again. 😎

:whathesaid:

If you're desperate (as in that's the only thing you've got to work with) ...

Take aerial threads and possibly drag them on to receiving plates.
This way it will be easier to take clean transfers later.

Looks like it will overtake the mold (will still be "contaminated") eventually, will be cool to watch

I think I just thew up in my mouth a bit. Though my first try 4 years ago was worse (though this has some actual shroom mycelium next to the mold and bacteria that would be a fun challenge now to transfer out):

So here's a new one... This is a clone plate from an outdoor fruit:

I thought I saw something on this plate move and went "wow, I'm pretty high already". Then I watched it straight up crawl across the plate... it was, indeed, a larva of some sort. Ewww. The little nub in the pics isn't a great representation, the fucker was fully half an inch long and crawling all over the place!

He seems to be dead today, I should have gotten a pic as soon as I discovered it! Made me wonder how many others went into the dehydrator. But those will be golden brown and delicious, so no worries!
