Do you guys just throw away old plates when they donโ€™t look great after taking a transfer or do you keep them for future use and if so, what for?

Ex: scalloped plates, non-uniform growth, thin/weak mycelium.

Being a noob Iโ€™ve got way too many of these and just tossing them feels a little painful but if thereโ€™s no use in keeping them after taking a transfer(s) I will:frown:

The growth patten will make it very obvious. Did you see the pics of the inoculated plates under the gif?

I'm obviously referring to the growth stage that is days before this level of growth when the first germinations occur and it is unclear whether they are following the steak pattern. I assume the answer is that people with established pipelines inoculate so many plates that it doesn't matter. :shrug:

Just giving you shit.  Youโ€™re overthinking the importance of where the streak was. Like sir said, and the example I posted, the germination is going to show up in the line/pattern you streak. If you follow the gif in c10โ€™s post, youโ€™re going to spread target spores and contaminants, both bacterial and fungal (should they be present), all around the plate and thatโ€™s goodโ€ฆin both cases, youโ€™re just trying to spread things out so you can select colonies of your target species to xfer from as opposed to having them all commingled together.

Mostly toss them, but some people keep them. Depends on how much space you want to dedicate to plates

Center spot yes. Iโ€™d transfer from the edge away from the adjacent spot after it grow some more

Thanks. Does something concern you about the other non center spot?

I inoculated this by placing a drop (just one drop) of spore solution on the surface of the agar. But since I didn't dig into the agar at all to make a pit for it to sit in, the spore solution rolled around the dish a bit (along with some condensation on the agar surface).
