How often do you fruit the same T2 plate? You are definitely narrowing down the strains in a clone from a mushroom body, and many still exist. If you took 10 transfers from that same plate all to grain and fruited them, I am willing to bet that none would look the same.

However, if you transfer down to a single sector, test it on multiple plates, and then take them to fruit…for the most part all of them would fruit the same.

I guess what I’m saying is if I can narrow down to a consistent grow, that over the course of years produces the same fruit size and weight, what would you call that? Whether it is a true genetic isolate is something I am not able to test for.

But as far as practicality goes, I have never been able to produce consistent fruiting from multiple transfers on the same T2.  The more I isolate, the more consistent my grows are. Some are consistently horrible, some are consistently good.

But that’s why i isolate and then save the culture in the fridge. I can grab a culture from 2 years ago that will fruit the exact same…

So I ask you genuinely and not being a smart ass…how do you explain that?

I'm having some difficulty figuring out the logistics of when/how I should make a transfer from plate to long-term storage (slant/vial) after finding a proven culture.

For example I just put an entire T3 clone plate to grain. If the plate that I put to grain performs,

Would it make sense to transfer from my backup T3's (I have several other T3 plates of the same variety, but the growth on the plates differ)?

Or should I have taken transfers from the plate that I put to grain > additional plates beforehand?

This is my first go at searching for well-performing cultures, my intention is to store them long-term and grow from them over and over again.


Please advise.

The exact same, uniform mushrooms. The same total product weight (give or take)…the same everything. Every time. What else would you call that? I’m just being practical. I don’t have a way to do genetic testing and I assume neither do you.

But for the sake of simply growing mushrooms and not breeding them, what more are you looking for? And what else would you call something that performs identically each time?

If I take ten transfers from a T2 plate, put each transfer to grain, and then fruited them they do not grow the same.

When I isolate down the line and fruit out the same way, I get a consistent grow every time.

You are assuming that I do not understand that many different genetics are at play. But all I am saying is that’s why we narrow it down to consistency.

You just got some consistent growth which is cool. It happens all the time to everyone. Gotta remember all these spores from trusted vendors and user trades are vastly inbred. Can't even imagine how inbred some varieties are. The MS you started originally could be inbred hundreds of times over for the last 20 years so yeah they get pretty consistent. That's the whole idea.

I might agree with you, but I am speaking from my experience. And i have used multiple sources.

Some grows are consistent, others are random. From the same spore source on a T2 I will get both consistent and inconsistent grows.

Further down the line I only get consistent grows. I definitely see a trend in consistency with further isolating

When I say consistent I mean that the mushroom look the same, flush the same, and produce the same amount.

Exactly this. Most cultivated varieties have had the heterozygosity basically stripped to zero.

Yeah that happens too, it's all a big genetic dice roll. I personally have never had the inconsistency you're talking about. Mine always work perfectly from the get go. But I get my spores from trusted friends here that go through the process of cloning and printing to produce more consistent varieties.

I would like to clarify because I think my writing conveys me the wrong way. I am not trying to be a troll or an asshole. It is that I understand what you are all saying and that the genetics are more complicated than simply looking for sectors.

But I do know when I see a trend. When I describe consistency in a grow I am not saying consistently good. 9/10 of the grows are failures. But they fail consistently.

What I am saying that in my experience (from multiple spore sources and over the course of many years) that there is a consistent trend in the way they grow.

The mycelium colonizes the substrate the same amount of time. The pinset looks the same. The morphology of the mushroom is the same. The the flushes recover in the same time. The product weight is the same. Of course not exactly the same, as there are always variable. But down to less than an ounce of difference.

And through all of my time growing, it is the same example that I gave no matter the spore source. If I inoculate a Petri dish MS, and take 10 transfers every single grow will produce something different in morphology, product weight, colonization times, etc.

That inconsistency doesn’t happen with T100. It might be inconsistently bad, but consistent nonetheless.

Why is that? (Again, genuine question)
