This batch is pretty cool.  These are all clones (cyanescens, allenii, azurescens, I’ve got some ovoid tubs too, just in a different spot)in attempts to follow in holofractals footsteps.  The substrate is alder smoker pellets mixed with potting soil.  The neat things is the bag of potting soil was soggy wet and smelled poopy anaerobic like something you wouldn’t want some culture you put any effort into anywhere near it.  But I though fuck it, if it’s that soggy it’s anaerobic which theoretically aren’t completion and possibly beneficial.  So I mixed one bag of smoker pellets to one bag of potting soil and let it sit a day and that resulted in a really nice feeling moisture balanced substrate and spawned a test batch, and they came out really nice looking.  So I made more tubs and they’ve all turned out really well, like one shoebox out of 15? Showed green mold.  Two of the later tubs showed grey mold right away, but they finished colonizing 100% and the mold isn’t visible now.
Just a note, these won’t be used directly outdoors as the smoker pellet stuff doesn’t turn out the best, it works, but is not my favorite for outdoor stuff.

Also will definetly try the grains strait to the fermented beds in fall then ;-) Doesn't hurt to have more than a couple of wild outdoorbeds I think :laugh:

Haha, well see ;-) I have learned in my time as landscape gardener, that often things work that actually seem not to work or be less beneficial.

I am just jumping into the cold water here with the woodlovers, but they kinda got me hooked^^ Can't wait when I can finally trip again after 15 yrs this fall with hopefully some of my first woodlovers :3

Trout, it's definitely true in my experience as well. Colonized grains are not an attractant to rodents. However, worms love to eat them in any case. They aren't super fast tho so the myc does have a chance to grow.

However critters love to dig in beds because the soil is already disturbed so it's a much easier starting spot, so they prefer it. I also agree the heat and myc mass will attract a lot of bugs and other tiny critters which eat it. Luckily the bulk of the myc can hide inside the wood particles.

It's a shame that the site error won't allow me to see your photos in their full glory :sad:

I believe it’s red maple, acer rubrum.  Are you near the stump and are there some of last years leaves?

Thank you Trout. It was an old dead tree the neighbors around the block finally cut down. The leaves are long gone and they were pretty sure it was maple. A lot of the upper wood had termite damage but some of the lower parts seem solid. There are some cut disc's like in the second pic that are about 2-3' thick. They want them gone and I thought about grabbing a couple for cult work. First I'd knock the bark off to try not to bring any bugs home.

Are you going to chip them up for woodlovers or plug them for edibles or something? I've wondered how big of a chunk the woodlovers can take on, I've seen pics of ovoids colonizing decent sized branches.

One more anecdote on the critter topic, my new ovoid bed from a couple days ago definitely had some critter holes that I noticed today, but they were pretty minor. They must have just been checking it out because as was mentioned, it doesn't seem like they're going after all of the colonized grain or anything.

And thanks for sharing all your knowledge, Land Trout. Your ramblings are our Bible at the moment.

I don't really see it mentioned on here, I think bc it's a pretty out of date tek by this point, but the method I've been using to 'sterilize' and hydrate chips has been soaking them overnight (or longer) in a 3% bleach solution, drain, and let the exterior dry up for a few hours before using. This seems to pretty effectively kill any mold spores living in the wood, and the mycelium doesn't seem to be put off by chips that have been soaked this way.

I had my doubts about fermenting as a means of killing off some of the molds I've seen show up from 'wild' chips (as opposed to the cleaner smoker chips), but it seems like plenty of people here have had success with it + the additional benefit of using the anaerobic cultures to jumpstart colonization, so maybe I'll move toward doing that instead. Certainly for outdoor beds it doesn't seem to cause any problems, and making outdoor beds with anything other than chip pile chips gets expensive fast. Other than Scott's I guess, but I'd want to mix that with hardwood if possible.

I had something dig up an eat multiple pf cakes worth the first night it was outside.  They where cubensis which I do in the summer sometimes with lightly crunched up brown rice, totally ruined it.  Assumed it was racoon.  We also have rats, possum, skunk active at night.  Hope that thing tripped from it.

During they day squirrels will dig around in the wood chip patches to stash nuts.  If you feed these squirrels they will make your backyard look like a bunch of land mines went off.  Little mounds everywhere.  They will wear a path in the grass from the feed site to the tree.  Convinced to only to feed the birds when there is snow on the ground takes care of a lot of it.  Ovoid will at least colonize peanut shells.

During a rain storm i've seen a wood chip patch almost pulsate.  Fucking worms coming up through it.  It does seem like worms will eat chips turning them into dirt.  I've been using chunkier chips compared to the consistency of mulch and it doesnt turn to dirt as fast (worm eat? or just decomposing).

Beginning of last summer I've buried a fully colonized Reishi cake. About 500ml volume. I was wondering why it wasn't fruiting, so a couple months later I dug in that spot.. Didn't find anything. Not even an indication that there was a substrate buried there. The fuckers ate everything, including the sawdust. Basically left a hole in the ground where the cake was buried.

I can safely say I have zero mushrooms, except for a few little caps have dropped behind a cabinet or something. I’d have to say it’s almost 20 years since this situation. Wasn’t a very good season up here but then again, I also didn’t get out much the few I got out of the tubs that I brought in my house when it was freezing like a sucker or softy or fool. I gave those away. it’s all good. I haven’t tripped in a couple years, and you know now that I got nothing I’m gonna want to although I do have about 20 or 30 hits random paper but it’s just a weird feeling is all I want to do Xpress thank you for listening I can see you guys my friends . Spore  print. I thought I was cool with it and kept on a petri dish didn’t do very well on my grain water, agar. I started another print that I had on some foil from who knows when and it’s doing pretty good it’s already on its second transfer.

You guys are killing it and it’s nice to see some new faces around here. Keep up the good work.

Wishing you much luck on your new endeavors  NC.  :rockon:  I was thinking about taking down some of the alder behind my house to expand our garden area and plant different tree species...  Never seem to get my hands on anything but the constant supply of birch, spruce,  mountain ash, and willow from firewood harvesting.  So much friggin alder up here though.  :strokebeard: 

Azzie blocks finished now basically.  Dropping cyan to blocks in a few and tomorrow or the next day allenii :rockon:  Also decided to try an outdoor stuntzii bed or two this year...  Waiting on the spores to germ now to do an indoor grow but thinking if I start early  an outdoor bed might really produce quite well after reading more about them...

How long do you guys ferment your woodchips for? I am soon reaching 1 month and not sure if I should already drain them, or just wait until the grains are fully colonized for inoculation? Can one ferment the chips for too long?
