too wet sub, too dry sub, over misting, genetics, underlying contams; could all possibly cause small fruits. I can't see any clear problems with these though. It looks healthy and the pins throughout whole surface makes me think fae is in a decent spot. They aren't finished yet either so wait and see if they blow up more before opening. Fat bottom pins like the second pic tend to explode into big ones ime. I think you might be worried a bit early on this one bud.

I'm short on time next week. Is it okay to PC some jars today, leave them in the PC for a week, then inoculate? I'm using standard canning lids with SFDs installed with RTV silicone. I don't know why this would be an issue, but I'd just like to ask this question here since you all are so quick to respond.

I wouldn't leave them in the PC for a week. The humidity will rust your lids prematurely. Put the jars on your shelf after youre done PCing. Just wipe them down with 70% iso real good next week before you noc em up.

These jars are on day 23. I think they are fully colonized behind the dry verm. I used 3 inoculation points each. One jar I only had enough spore solutuion to 'noc one hole. I've added that jar as a comparison so you can see the actual substrate, the dry verm and colonization. The cakes seem to be consolidated too because they are fully off the sides of jar and the cake looks tightly held. What do you mates think??

I’m assuming you inoculated the sides against the glass? If so, you need to give it a week from it being visibly colonized on the outside. This is why I personally recommend a single center point inoculation. That way when it’s visibly colonized, it’s good to go. Either way, let them sit for a while to be certain they’re ready to birth is my advice.

Exactly how I did it. I'd read about doing the center hole and it actually sounded logical re: ease of knowing when ready. I'm not sure why I went ahead with multiple inoculation points anyways 🤷♂️

Hard to tell. Generally speaking, PF substrate halts bacterial growth almost entirely. I say go for it if you want a shoebox. It’s a pretty safe bet.

If you're going to shred them for a shoebox, you don't need to wait a full week for consolidation like you would if you were fruiting them as cakes.. Some people still give them a few days, some just spawn them right away. I'd usually give then a couple days and then spawn them.

Thank you for that. They seem to be pretty damn consolidated to me. The mycelium has pulled the substrate together really nicely. The cakes look like they will slide right out.

I bought some whole grain rye in the country where I live (Norway). It's being sold as a mushroom spawn substrate.

Going over RR's videos, I got confused. In the 5 steps to perfect grain spawn he's using organic rye berries: They get rinsed and soaked for 12-24h, drained then PCd.

In another video he's using rye grass seed, where he's mixing 2:1 of rye:water in a jar, then PC.

Can someone explain the difference between seed and berries? Perhaps with photos or description so I can figure out what I have?

Rye grass seed and rye berries are from two totally different plants. Rye grass seed is smaller and it's spread around on yards to make/thicken lawns. Rye berries are grains that Rye bread is made from. You have grain type of Rye.

I have only used oats so far smelly. Rinse real good and soak for 24hr. Rinse really good again removing all floaters and foreign material I can find until the water stays crystal clear. Boil for 20-30 minutes until fully hydrated. Spread out on screen to dry overnight usually. Load up jars and PC for 90min @ 18psi.
