Cool. Do the reading. Exhibiting individual research, combing throughf TEKs, and at least tryihng the Search Engine will get you more support than the opposite,

Hi guys, my agar learning continues. I tried different color plates this time and did couple transfers from germ plates. Do these look good enough to take transfers from and if so what would be the best spots to do so? These are like 5 days old i think.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know the benefits of adding nutritional yeast to an agar recipe?

You end up with plates like D3? Nah I think it’s just extra nutrition. As he advises, try some plates with and without. He also says the ones that you do add the yeast to will be slightly cloudier so to add some activated charcoal. Didn’t really answer your question but it killed a minute

I know Bigfoot likes it for some reason so I tried some. I've currently got plates with and without. I'm glad you mentioned the charcoal, if I were to obtain some how many grams would go into 500ml of water?

I believe d3 just uses an approximate tablespoon for 500ml, but don't quote me on that. I've never used the stuff. For the entire start of this cult season I would get nothing but weak and translucent mycelial growth on all of my plates which led to bigger issues. I got frustrated, added some yeast and the next round of plates I used showed much stronger and healthier growth. I still don't know what it actually does but it worked for me and I'm not looking back.

If you don't send your agar mix through a blender (or use a stick blender) then you'll wind up with yeast chunks in the plate, unless you use charcoal I suppose. With a blender the plates are opaque

I do also believe that quality of genetics is still the key player in getting super rhizo plates but the yeast has helped a lot

Nutritional yeast is often inactivated S. cerevisiae aka brewers yeast. Since it's a fairly closely related organism it likely carries a similar amino acid profile to cubes, and probably uses very close copies of orthologous enzymes. All that to say, it's a very digestible source of their optimal nutrition. Otherwise our cubes just have some carbs from which they have to make all their proteins, genetic material, etc.

"Ray Peat  Yes, boil the water and Brewers yeast combination. Let simmer at rolling boil for 2-5 minutes. Then pour into glass. Let the sediment fall down to the bottom over a period of half hour or so. Pour off liquid. Discard sediment."

So then I add the LME simmer and strain. Then back to simmer and add the agar.

I just add food coloring that way I don't notice any chunks of anything.

I like shit simple though.  If I had to blend or strain im not sure I could talk myself into all that.

I love my brewers yeast. I add one gram per 500ml of water. You could probably get away with a 1/2gram though.

Straining is where I draw the line for agar. Blending takes me an extra 90 seconds - cleanup included. Bring agar to simmer, put stick blender in for 40 seconds, hot water rinse and into the dishwasher. Done. Compared to all the time I spend on this hobby it's a small price to pay lol

Is brewers yeast similar/the same as nutritional yeast?

Yes you are. Those LCs look flawless to me. The only questionable one is one in from the far right but I think it’s clear - just has so much mycelium coverage that there’s hardly any uncolonized solution. Nice work.

Thanks, Hindsight. Everything was kicking my as up to about 2-3 weeks ago. Grain, spawn, subs, plates. I had a shitshow/trich farm going…90% fail maybe. Then snap and everything is looking swell.

I think the constant studying in LAGM made a huge difference.

The search engine here has made it easy to find current and relevant answers to any questions that I've had so far. So much so that I've had no reason to ask many at all.

For real though, I have more mushroom oriented bookmarks now than Edward Penishands at a speed reading contest in Hershey Pennsylvania.

My post count grows so slowly that it'll be a while before I can take part in the marketplace. About the same amount of time it'll be before I have something worth sharing anyways, so it'll work out.
