I may have phrased wrong. Was more asking about the excess agar in there but I figured it prob would just be more food for it but better safe and ask then find out weeks later. Appreciate the info..good to know I can just pick the disc out of one, toss it in, and shake the grains over the top of it and good to go.

I bought the borosilicate petris so I can just wash, sterilize, repour, colonize, and ready to go for next set of jars. What would you say would be the smallest wedge that is advisable for a qt jar in case one day I decide to do a much larger batch of jars?

1-2 pieces is really all you need though. I'd probably do like what you suggested.  Quadrant that plate out and drop it in 4 quarts if I was going for a mono tub.

It only colonizes slightly faster to drop the whole plate in per jar.

I don't suggest dropping it all in - I avoid using the edges at all costs. I was just saying that there isn't a suggested maximum to stay below. If I'm going to use the entire plate I'll do 5-6 jars per plate. Otherwise I'll just use a certain sector because I think it's prettier or maybe it's a little faster.

I misunderstood the original question, which isn't that big of a surprise but no - the size of the agar wedge doesn't negatively impact the jar. It's actually kinda cool - once you spawn the grains you'll be able to pull the shriveled up agar wedge out of the grains. All of the nutrients and most of the water has been consumed leaving behind just a thin, leathery, degraded, used up, mistreated and generally spoken badly of remnant of the wedge lol

I always thought this was on the higher end of tolerance for cubes? Anything over about 81 and you’re risking increased risk of contamination. I’m sure that was in an old Stamets book though so maybe since has been debunked.

Although, that would make sense when you’re talking about grain spawn. Agar and spore germination on the other hand not so much…

I agree with sandman, if you have contaminants they're going to make themselves known at some point, so it's best to find out on agar. I also feel like mycelium colonizes way faster at 78 F or higher than it does at lower temps. Right now I've got all my stuff at room temperature because I got rid of my incubator during my last move, and grain jars now take 3+ weeks to colonize when they took about 8-10 days at 78 F.

I keep all my stuff in a closet with a small space heater, and temp sensor set for around 70. Is that the same thing?
