What are the advantages/disadvantages of coloring agar? Some people are sold on it and others never do it.

Makes it look cool/easier to spot contams. Demonic is running experiments on red #3 to see if it inhibits growth

Hey guys just wanted to say you were right!
The rhizo on the left has now gotten some cyan mold color. (not really visible on the pic). But you can see the metabolites / anti-microbial juice around it.
So rhizos like these on old germ plates should definitely be avoided.

I eventually spawned it. Seems like I need to go back to the drawing board. Weakest growth that I have ever seen.

See what I'm saying sorry that one plate looks butchered I ran a god awful amount of plates with it.

But on a positive note my golden halo is looking great where would you sector it?
I'm thinking the position 7:00 8:00 where it's growing out from the rest.

Btw this is 2 days after spawn!

Quezon isolate that I've worked on for the last year. It's a quick colonizer but fruit slow for some reason. 5.5qt spawn to brick of coir 3qt verm 1/4cup gypsum. 4.5qt water.

In love with this plate. T1 of a pin clone of rusty whyte x melmac

Had a few plates on T2 or T3 that weren’t clones that look just as nice but I need to pour some more agar.

Am I paranoid/crazy or is the thin halo underlay bacteria? I kind of always operate under the assumption that it is.

Hard to say. Definitely doesn't look the best.

D3monic, I went on a deep dive search about this a few weeks ago, and this was the most helpful post I found.

tl;dr "It's fine, it happens sometimes", as per Bod, and as per the OP's subsequent experiments. I have a few plates that are stubbornly showing a halo a bit wider than yours, we'll see how they go.

I’m adding to my experiment thread and doing a comparison of no nute water agar, hot pour and antibiotic agar but I need additional research on the antibiotics. I’ll give that thread a read now

Ok, just gave it a read and reaffirms my assumption that it’s just the leading edge digging in a little.. still don’t trust it 100% though lol

My last round of agar I forgot to add any nutes to the 50% diluted gsw... all of my plates have the halo look to them... the first ones are going to grain tonight... we'll see if everything goes green or not! Lol

Re: AGAR ENVY! (Anything and All things agar!) [Re: redbee]

Yeah, worth mentioning that I'm getting the halo effect from a batch of agar where I definitely messed up the ratios a bit (didn't heat it up long enough at first, had to re-do, sediment stuck to my pyrex, blah blah).

Anyway, I'll assume "no news is good news" if we don't hear back from each other in a few weeks!

I'm currently testing a crazy mix grain water mixed with sugar and lme half a packet of in the raw or .5g lme .5 and grain water for 50ml to 150ml water for a total of 200ml I think that might be to much nutes tbh I might cut back to .25 each and 25ml gw. We will see.

Is anyone using gellan gum/Gelrite instead of agar?

Crystalclear plates might come in handy, but I wonder if there are any real advantages to agar for mycology work.
