"They say there's no future for us. They're right. Which is fine with us."

What do you make of it?

Reason is transient. Forgetfulness reigns.

Why is that OK with us?

Because advantage can be gained from a contender's misstep.

us is we, me and my other; you and your other are us to you.

who then is the other, none but the one you have been and yet will be: the one that is still standing while you have already now become you to carry the ball to your next you.

this is the modus of on-going presence, a passing of the hat to the self.

alternate futures to this are uninteresting if you are in tune with the present, and cherish the other.

"enlightened" people always speak of existing in the now.

Perhaps this is what Rumi means by this wonderful one liner.

I think it was RGV who first made me aware of Rumi's consort, Coki. :jester:

I don't know about a Coki friendship with RUmi, maybe it was Icelander.

Rumi was a mystic sufist who was accused of herecy. I think by "future" he means afterlife or heaven.

He was OK with any harm that can come from his beloved.

I think his beloved was himself, though some think it was a sweet boy who had a separate body - i.e. gay love

If the "future" is infinite, no symbol or word can represent it. Irrational, like "truth".

where is the mystery?

1) everyone will die
2) the enlightened are ok with everything
therefore
3) the enlightened are not bothered by their mortality

or that of a species, planet, (or all species), or universe

Well I don't think what you said is necessarily true which is why I was looking for other people's perspective.

Sometimes it's good to hear what other people think about things and not just go with the first perspective or meaning that becomes clear to you.

There's things I've been as and thought I understood only to discover the words held a different meaning years later, often under the influence of psychedelics.

No mystery to you maybe, but I find a lot of Rumi to be very interestingly mysterious

As mentioned, that could easily be because I am a young fool

Thanks everyone for sharing

as stated also above
all the deeper spiritual teachings point to the same...

always in the now

(ie there is no future)

as well as:

no separate self
(so what could 'die'?)
impermanence
abandon clinging
etc.

but yeah sure, it would be nice if Rumi had a secret that would save you from all that unpleasant ego denying stuff.
