Just trying to understand :shrug:

To me the mystery lies in how easily words, especially when one is using a few words to say a lot and which seem to contain a meaning behind the surface level interpretation, can be so easily misinterpreted.

I honestly didn't mean to make it out as if it is so philosophical, I just wanted to hear what the words meant to others :shrug:

And again, I appreciate everyone providing their perspective.

with regards to the rumi quote?

i think people see more in the quote than I do but I also think there have been good things said within the thread.

I'd be interested in more context about the quote personally.

The Tavern
Rumi

All day I think about it, then at night I say it. Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing? I have no idea. My soul is from elsewhere, I\'m sure of that, And I intend to end up there.

This drunkenness began in some other tavern. When I get back around to that place, I\'ll be completely sober. Meanwhile, I\'m like a bird from another continent, sitting in this aviary. The day is coming when I fly off, But who is it now in my ear who hears my voice? Who says words with my mouth?

Who looks out with my eyes? What is the soul? I cannot stop asking.

If I could taste one sip of an answer, I could break out of this prison for drunks. I didn\'t come here of my own accord, and I can\'t leave that way. Whoever brought me here will have to take me home.

This poetry. I never know what I\'m going to say. I don\'t plan it. When I\'m outside the saying of it, I get very quiet and rarely speak at all.

We have a huge barrel of wine, but no cups. That\'s fine with us. Every morning We glow and in the evening we glow again.

They say there\'s no future for us. They\'re right.

Which is fine with us.

Yeah he's very poetic. The tavern is one of the opening poems

It's part of a larger text which speaks of getting drunk on wine, which was possibly/likely a poetic metaphor of love. Of course, Rumi didn't have a problem with calling love, love either.

Anyway, they say there's no future for drunks. They're right. That's fine with us.

I agree with laughingdog. Taken metaphorically, what he lives for is in the moment and he lives for the wine (which could be interpreted as love). What use is there of a future? Is there even a future? If there were would it not be the same as the present? If it was not like the present, why would he want it?

why there is reality and patterned, law-like consistency at all, rather than noise or non-reality is not a question physics answers. It's a question physics presupposes an answer to in order to provide other answers.

He started the the poem with "I" and ended up with "we".

Which is fine with us."

This is to emphasize the god speaking through him. All the grapes get squished and mixed in "Wine", which is the prana, the soul that fills "the cup", the body, material.

us is morning and evening, close to sleep, where layering and doubling and we come out of the functional I of the everyday world.

redgreenvines, I think the morning is the birth and the evening is the death. the night is the nullness, the opposite of counsciousness.

then the "future" must be the afterlife, or beforelife. he means that there is no "future" - dream - heaven or hell, "which is fine by us"????

I have read his Masnavi twice. It is still hard to interpret his words but I am getting familiar with the commonly used terms of sufist litereture.

and when coffee is served with halva then it is morning again, and when you step outside to the sparkling world, and when you come home to the quiet comfort, it keeps on happening, not just twice per day or night.
