Relatively short term goals mate, H.R. 1 can make a difference in building political momentum while the Green New Deal addresses the issue of emissions reductions and sustainable energy production, it would make a real difference by 2030 if implemented. It also creates a lot of jobs.

Refugees and cataclysm comes after the fact so for now it’s a good first step to at least get foot in the door.

The higher cost of energy will also cost millions of jobs and the potential death of millions of humans. There's no free lunch here.

Our whole existence in a modern economy is completely based on the return on energy investment, the cheaper the energy results in a higher standard of living.

Nuclear energy should be the best choice, but nothing is being done about it.

Jobs would be created and energy costs don’t go up, it’s a very gradual process that includes a smart grid to make sure energy is efficiently transported.

No ones talking about free lunches, aircraft carries aren’t free, they’re tax payed, because money can be allocated.

I mean millions of deaths? Where did you hear this?

And I’ll just leave this here in regards to the Green New Deal.

"Providing all people of the United States with — (i) high-quality health care; (ii) affordable, safe, and adequate housing; (iii) economic security; and (iv) access to clean water, clean air, healthy and affordable food, and nature."

We as humans, look at what we like to look at, and tend to ignore all that we don't like.
The entire history of so called "humanity" has been:
brutal, corrupt, cruel, selfish, xenophobic, superstitious, greedy, fearful, etc. ...
All of which, we must pretend we don't know, to function in our everyday lives.
As buddha pointed out the entire phenomenal world is characterized for humans by suffering
As we tend to be "asleep" we ignore/ignor-ance all this.
Loosely speaking this indulgence probably is easier for middle class and upper class white American males, and other such individuals belonging to privileged demographics.

As the entire history of so called "humanity" has frankly been largely characterized mainly as:
brutal, corrupt, cruel, selfish, xenophobic, superstitious, greedy, fearful, etc. ...
as well as often, behind the scenes, specifically: sadistic, devious, spiteful, vengeful, etc. ...
to expect anything other than an end to civilization, itself that matches the ends of all past empires, especially as all nations are now connected,
would be to once again ignore the obvious,
as well as to fall prey to the same fallacy that cigarette smokers fall prey too, namely the fallacy that: it won't (or shouldn't) happen to ME, (or in my lifetime).

The comforts of everyday life, the joys of enjoying family and friends, music, and so on are just a veneer on the surface of the brutal engines that run the world beneath. H.G. Wells  "The Time Machine" was not just science fiction, IMO, but a deep metaphor. Unintended, but appropriate pun.

There sure is corruption in congress, hence campaign finance reforms..
Quid pro-quo arrangements are an issue in need of being addressed and it sure as heck is being worked on in the US.

I really don't know what you're talking about but it sounds like unrelated fear mongering.

A lot of things are shotty in current political systems if that's what you're getting at, and I agree, what I'm saying is that there are solutions that don't involve cataclysms.

It's like how the lickspittle psycophants of the far right say medicare for all is not feasible, because it surely is. America is the only modern nation without it, not due to some sort of impossibility but because of hindered political momentum due to quid pro-quo arrangements.

humans have made a mess of the entire planet
this is not fear mongering
world wide ocean fish are not safe to eat in quantity anymore
due to pollution
People regularly die in many of the great cities due to smog pollution
a great animal extinction is happening, etc etc

humans have made a mess of the social environment
for thousands of years with continual warfare
and associated torture, slavery, & rape

As far as I'm concerned this does not qualify as rational or intelligent behavior
Going to the moon, radio, TV, & all the rest of the technical inventions, & scientific theories
do not mitigate the inability of the species to act in its own self interest

Based on this I'm not optimistic, as regards a bright future for the human species.
In fact it is only due to your living in a nice place, compared to say: North Korea, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Russia, China, Venezuela, among many others, that you fail to realize life is already hellish for most humans.

Economically since World War 2, the standard of living has gone downhill, in the USA. In the 1950s only the father had to work to support a middle class family. Now both parents must work, and the children get less time with their parents, which has serious social consequences. Regardless of which political party has been in charge, this trend has been continuous for 70 years, in the planet's richest nation. Again the public is fooled by the public political sideshow.

Reality is not hidden if one simply exercises some critical thinking, and abandons comfortable assumptions.

That all the 'great' empires of the past have fallen, while true by definition, was not inevitable--but was caused by human: greed, aggression, xenophobia, & short sightedness/stupidity.
This 'timeless' pattern is not hidden.
To expect it to change, is have the same mind set as the majority of those, who lived in the past empires - that all fell.

In Greek mythology, --Cassandra was punished by the god Apollo, who left her the gift of prophecy but cursed her so that no one could or would believe her.

So there is a penalty for abandoning consensus views, and only some are willing to pay the price.

The OP's link takes a similar view. It would be so nice if it were only "fear mongering." on my part.
Here is the post again, as you seem not to have read it Sudly:

"In this article http://www.lifeworth.com/deepadaptation.pdf, the certainty of social disaster within 10 years is established with clear references.

Since records began in 1850, seventeen of the eighteen hottest years have occurred since 2000, and the geometric progression of the effect is exacerbated by permafrost thaws and sea bed warming both of which are releasing Methane which is more of a green house gas than CO2.

Apparently nothing in our power can mitigate disastrous flooding, famine, war, and weather upheaval fueling complete destruction of our social fabric and economies."

The only difference is the professor does not strip away human vanities, along the way, as I do.
He comes at the problem with physical science.
Whereas I, like William Burroughs, & many satirists, see the 'Naked Lunch' for what it is.
Something that in reality is rather unattractive, which no amount of perfume can coverup.
In fact the truth is so ugly, satire is really unnecessary.
Especially as there seems no benefit in waking others up.
Just another bad habit some of us have.

There's always the phoenix from the ashes.

Of course, human nature will remain.

It may be a gray future rather than black. In that case knowledge will remain and still increase though perhaps at a much lower rate. If something really bad were to happen to substantially lower the population... humanity would have much more time using conventional energy to achieve the technology that will allow sustainable populations in the future.

For those who live in relatively nice, disease free, relatively peaceful places, with decent infrastructure, it is interesting to speculate about possible forms an apocalyptic future might take, as many novels & movies explore.

However life is already hellish for most humans. For example a majority of those who live in:
North Korea, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Russia, China, Venezuela, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, any Muslim country if you are a woman, Libya, any American city ghetto, Detroit, Puerto Rico, any coastal area at sea level- especially small island areas, India, Pakistan, Palestine, Tibet, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, & many African nations, among many others,
( https://en.wikipedia.org/wikiList_of_ongoing_armed_conflicts )
& pretty much anywhere one lives if one lives in extreme poverty.
“More people survive today without adequate food or clean water than live in the United States and the European Union combined.
For those poorest of the poor, the bottom billion, life can turn with every flicker in the worldwide supply of food, water, or energy.”
https://www.rand.org/blog/rand-review/2016/10/the-hot-spots-of-the-world.html

infant mortality rates
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_and_under-five_mortality_rates

“Babies born in America are less likely to reach their first birthday than babies born in other wealthy countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a new study found. While infant mortality rates have declined across the OECD since 1960, including in America, the U.S. has failed to keep pace with its high-income peers, according to a report published in the journal Health Affairs.”

Disease free Drinking water:
Dirty water causes the death of...
a human being every 10 seconds. Every year 3,575,000 people die from water related diseases. This is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every hour. Most of these people are children (2.2 million).
http://www.theworldcounts.com/counters/interesting_water_facts/dirty_water_diseases

http://www.theworldcounts.com/counters/interesting_water_facts/how_much_water_do_i_use_a_day

The more research one does the more apparent it becomes that life is already hellish for most humans, and that, the problems are both long standing, world wide, and have never been properly addressed by the majority of those in a position to help. (Doctors without borders are one exception that comes to mind.)

But overall, the 5 to 10 thousand years of history of the human race, has been one of selfishness and not one of compassion. No progress has been made, on this front during all of recorded history. Here and there attempts have been been made at isolated times & places, to do things differently, such as in the Israeli kibbutzim and the hippie communes, among a few other examples. But obviously world wide, nothing at all has been accomplished in 5 to 10 thousand years of history.

It seems that only among monastics ( & a few nuns) does one find large groups (of say 10 to 300 folks) willing to do inner work on themselves. And to do so they must isolate themselves, and over and over again submit their egotistical impulses to a master and to the group. They also commit themselves, to years of serious practice.

The lightweight teachings of the ‘Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’ of Beetle’s fame, with his 20 minutes of meditation, twice a day, obviously did nothing for the world, in spite of his claims, and the disciplines of the monastics are also not a solution for the world. Like wise it is unlikely that Eckhart Tolle’s claims that more people are ’starting to get it’, has any factual basis, especially as regards changing the world; much as I would like to believe him.

Yea, life sucks, but Armageddon wouldn't help matters. I've said before that only a radical advancement in energy technology can change the situation. Even then the world would still be filled with conflicted people. Maybe genetic advancements can weed out certain survival traits without killing the human spirit and result in a new breed of humans without the same problems. At any rate, without some change we'll continue to be humans like we always have been.

indeed some genetic engineering may happen,
whether it is to produce super soldiers
(like the Nazi's aryan race, wet dream), in a secret lab in China,
or something more benign no one knows.

as for energy,- fusion power, seems to remain a dream;
and many nuclear plants, are already near earthquake fault zones;
and the current (pun) electrical grids are open to both hacking & brown outs (& already in places running at over capacity causing forest fires, from over heated lines (California));
while population grows and continues to move into urban areas.
What will happen with wind & solar vs. oil/tar sands/fracking & coal I have no idea.

Of course there could be a wild card that saves the day, like electrical brain stimulation, increasing intelligence or 'spiritual' insight, but it doesn't seem like a good bet.

You've pointed out problems with no solutions or attempt thereof, that to me is fear mongering.

Yes there's pollution, yes climate changing is impending, yes there's a lot of warfare, yes technology doesn't mitigate selfishess, yes empires have fallen, and yes even first world countries are full of human suffering and poor living standards.

What should we do about it? Sit back and take the beating? Cry ourselves to sleep? Because you've offered nothing useful.

What you have offered is fear.
Quote:
laughingdog said: Apparently nothing in our power can mitigate disastrous flooding, famine, war, and weather upheaval fueling complete destruction of our social fabric and economies."

If you read the paper you would know the author provided an informative explanation of the situation and the dire need to recognise that more adaptations are necessary to reduce future harm.
Quote:
Sadly, the latest climate data, emissions data and data on the spread of carbon-intensive lifestyles show that the landslide has already begun. As the point of no return can’t be fully known until after the event, ambitious work on reducing carbon emissions and extracting more from the air (naturally and synthetically) is more critical than ever. That must involve a new front of action on methane.

Disruptive impacts from climate change are now inevitable. Geoengineering is likely to be ineffective or counter-productive. Therefore, the mainstream climate policy community now recognises the need to work much more on adaptation to the effects of climate change. That must now rapidly permeate the broader field of people engaged in sustainable development as practitioners, researchers and educators. In assessing how our approaches could evolve, we need to appreciate what kind of adaptation is possible.

Recent research suggests that human societies will experience disruptions to their basic functioning within less than ten years due to climate stress. Such disruptions include increased levels of malnutrition, starvation, disease, civil conflict and war – and will not avoid affluent nations. This situation makes redundant the reformist approach to sustainable development and related fields of corporate sustainability that has underpinned the approach of many professionals (Bendell et al, 2017). Instead, a new approach which explores how to reduce harm and not make matters worse is important to develop. In support of that challenging, and ultimately personal process, understanding a deep adaptation agenda may be useful.

On your further points;

Armed conflicts overseas are a serious issue that can be addressed by ending the uneccesarry and unconstitutionally begun wars the US is involved in.

Quote:
The United States maintains 800 military bases worldwide at a cost of $100 billion a year. This is money that can be spent at home creating jobs, rebuilding infrastructure, and investing in the future of the people. The disastrous war in Iraq cost trillions, the war in Afghanistan is going on 17 years in with no end in sight, and we’re currently bombing 7 different countries. We spend more on our military than the next 8 countries combined. It’s time to end the wars and the perverse monetary incentive structure that makes politicians flippant about sending young men and women to die. Unilateral U.S. military force should only be used as a last resort to defend the nation. The current budget could be cut drastically if we used our department of defense for what it was intended — defending us, instead of waging interventionist wars.

Stopping the sale of arms to human rights violators would also aid in reducing this issue.
Quote:
We recently gave Saudi Arabia billions in weapons and watched the civilian death toll in their vicious bombing campaign in Yemen tick up. We continue sending Egypt arms as they violently crack down on peaceful protesters. Israel received $38 billion in aid and promptly announced new settlements. The first step to peace is not enabling nations who regularly violate international law.

40,000 people die each year in the US alone from lack of healthcare.
https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2018/10/15/study-45000-deaths-per-year-due-to-lack-of-health-insurance/

Quote:
The United States should catch up to every other modern nation and implement a single payer, Medicare for All system. It’s time to end the destruction of American health care by rapacious, price gouging, for-profit, private health insurance middlemen.

To say that no progress has been made on the front of improving human wellbeing is jaw breaking to say the least.

Some people are starting to get it, some are still catching up, the majority I'd say.

P.S. wind and solar power go hand in hand with smart grids

I will select one last example, as arguing over what seems a belief system is pointless, & I'm sure you can find those who agree with you, & I have no need to convince anyone.

As the points here are independently supported, by those far better informed than I am, it maybe of interest to some. Hence I end with these references for anyone interested. The authors referenced have great references, as a little curiosity will show.

To start with I'm not sure whom you are quoting, here, but in any case:

"Stopping the sale of arms to human rights violators would also aid in reducing this issue.
[and] Quote:
We recently gave Saudi Arabia billions in weapons and watched the civilian death toll in their vicious bombing campaign in Yemen tick up. We continue sending Egypt arms as they violently crack down on peaceful protesters. Israel received $38 billion in aid and promptly announced new settlements. The first step to peace is not enabling nations who regularly violate international law." [end quote]

But you provide no real solution (which is what you blame me for) and just say what you think should be.

While seemingly failing to realize US policy, behind the scenes, has been to support dictatorships for years - & that what the public is told is one thing - & that the CIA & NSA & Military & School of the Americas etc. have black budgets & actually seem to control policy. Which includes outsourcing torture, routinely supporting states/nations that use torture, & circumventing both the constitution & democracy that is supposed to exist in the US, but has been circumvented for about 70 years, roughly since
WW II.
Such use of pure immoral selfish power is not about to roll over and play nice for anyone, IMO.

The references for this are:

——————————

Given that the powers that be, are be are interested purely in domination and more power, and are actually currently also locked into:  (1) ongoing cyber warfare, & (2) a proxy war with Russia in Syria, & (3) competition world wide with China for rare minerals in Africa & South America, & (4) the president is dissolving the nuclear arms treaty, & (5 & 6) North Korea & Iran remain problematic, I consider it highly unlikely, that those who actually control world events, will commit to those actions you hope for.
But again, no one should take my opinion, as a substitute for doing their own reading & investigation & thinking.
Certainly many do not know how to live without hope, no matter how much they may talk about living in the present.

The solution is not to provide arms to the nations that partake in armed conflict.. it may not be the be all end all of war but it'd surely be a step towards reducing conflict.

What solutions have you provided other than fear?

And of course these things won't end themselves, which is why there are political movements for legislative changes to make these changes.

The point is that those in power are not committing to hopeful actions, hence the need to remove them and replace them with legislators that represent the will of the people, that represent a true democracy.

E.g. The majority are for marijuana legalisation and medicare for all, while against endless military interventions.
