The New York post is Fox News in print. It’s a garbage tabloid owned by the same company that owns Fox News.

AOC never said she wanted to get rid of cars. She says we should get rid of cars powered by gasoline. Perfectly reasonable. Do you really think gaslinine powered cars will be around in twenty years?

Good luck with that. They just installed six charging stations in the parking lot of my grocery store. They are popping up everywhere. Gas is on the way out

You're not going to want a gas powered car in 20 years. Electric cars will outperform them in every way.

Fuck yeah. They are already building electric semi trucks that will outperform diesel semi's.

If the pricing was right, I'd buy it then.

Although I'm headed out to the off grid. I don't know how that would work. Maybe solar, but what about winter and that? Does it still charge?

Well, Christopera knows more about all of that than I do. I think that affordable electric pickups are probably a ways off. I don't know much about the charging stations, and all that jazz, but I have to think that eventually you ought to be able to charge your vehical with solar. It seems like that would enable you to survive off grid better than a diesel truck.

In 20 years, I think there will be very few diesel trucks running around.

You know that some of the first electric vehicles were logging trucks from before the advent of the diesel engine, right?  Gasoline engines didn't perform well enough at that task.  Battery tech at the time sucked though, so electric got shelved as soon as diesel came along.

Why does diesel outperform gasoline?

https://mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/23865/why-do-heavy-vehicles-almost-always-use-diesel-engines
Quote:
Torque is the name of the game. High torque is needed to move heavy loads. If comparing a gasoline engine to a comparable diesel engine the diesel will always have higher torque. The higher torque comes from the need for a higher compressing ratio needed for compression ignition

diesels can make tremendous torque at very low RPM.

At idle the engine uses hardly any fuel. This lean mixture allows for the addition of large quantities of fuel even at low RPM. A gasoline engine on the other hand always has to keep the fuel mixture at optimal stoichiometric. This need to keep the mixture correct means that to get more fuel the engine needs to rev to higher RPMs. This means that a gasoline engine makes it's torque at much higher RPM than a diesel.

If a gasoline engine was used it would have to be much larger. The much larger engine would make for greater fuel consumption.

maybe the logging thing was made up though. I can't find anything now.

Acceleration 0-60 mph with 80k lb :20 sec
Speed up a 5% Grade: 60 mph
Mile Range: 300 or 500 miles
Powertrain : 4 Independent Motors on Rear Axles
Energy Consumption: Less than 2 kWh per mile
Fuel Savings :$200,000+ (over total vehicle lifespan)

Expected Base Price
(300 mile range)
$150,000

Expected Base Price
(500 mile range)
$180,000

Torque/HP not disclosed/final yet - they have 2,000 preorders already

In comparison, if you're not familiar with semi's - the current top of the line best selling semi in the US:

Freightliner Cascadia:
Class 8

Horsepower
350-600 HP

Torque
Up to 1850 lb-ft

GVW
60,600 lbs.

Averages about 8mpg
(which means you're paying a fuuuuuuuck ton for fuel)

155-160,000$~ new

But what's interesting - and good - is that all of the companies are jumping in on electric and fast,
The aforementioned semi company:

https://www.trucknews.com/equipment/freightliner-debuts-electric-cascadia-m2/1003086111/

Not near the tech Tesla is working with imo (especially as Tesla Semi's may have semi-autonomous features in a short span) - but its good to see they're making an effort, and that the industry is recognizing that they need to move in this direction and fast if they want to survive. There's a lot of other impressive electric vehicles coming out aside from Tesla's as well - notably from German brands.

So consider given the specs; the average cost per kWh throughout the US is 12 cents... so calculated at a modest estimate of 1.7 kWh/mile (what a weird combination of units)

500 mile range = 850 kWh consumed = 102$ recharge

Diesel cost of the same trip:

500 miles @ 7mpg (average of a top of the line semi) = 71.4 gallons consumed @ 3.00$/gallon (avg US diesel price at the moment) = 214.5$

And you had to be in a loud as fuck, vibrating, polluting semi to achieve the same thing and pay more

Considerations: Refueling/recharge - Tesla has announced a network of megawatt-level charges for their semi's that can recharge to 400 miles~ in 30 minutes (and who wouldn't want to stop for 30 minutes+ after 400 miles honestly - if it's not required by law far before then) - but it still has to be built and wont initially be as widespread

with conventional diesel - support is certainly widespread, and the trucks carry about 150 gallons - which is simultaneously advantageous to them, efficiency wise however if you've ever seen a very serious truck accident, they can definitely have the potential to create immense fires.

Yeah they won’t have human drivers anyways. There will come a time in your lifetime when it will become  very difficult and expensive to insure a human operator of a motor vehicle on public roadways

Woof had a good thread going about the potential redundancy of human resource with special regards to driver-less vehicles, specifically trucking.

At current manufacturing rates it is going to take around 20 years to replace the human driven fleet, this is in regards to long haul. Short haul often relies on the driver to load and unload the vehicle, as a result they won't be replaced any time soon.

There are no (well maybe like a few) mass produced electric tractors in use. Whenever that happens, expect about 20 years for that to phase in and diesel to phase out.

It's important to note that commercial tractors are generally run until they are in need of being retired (derp, but it is in contrast to how passenger vehicles are treated). That's sometimes as much 1.5M miles. Electric tractors should last longer. Electric drive trains and motors are much simpler in just about every regard than that of internal combustion engines and drive trains. So they should go longer, although battery replacement is going to be a real infrastructure challenge.

As for electric performance, .75kw equals about 1 horsepower. Electric motors produce 100% torque at 0 RPM, that performance falls from there, but they are happy to turn tens of thousands of RPM, we might see maximum RPM ranges like 50K or even higher. Electric motors don't need transmission as a result. They can also be built into the wheels meaning a total lack of drive train, no drive shafts, no constant velocity joints, and with the right controlling hardware and software you can get real time independent all wheel drive. To do this with internal combustion you have three differentials, several drive shafts, a bunch of constant velocity joints, software, sensors, and a host of other shit that makes things more expensive and more complicated. So ultimately once battery technology gets a bit better there is no doubt electric will beat out internal combustion.

Will we see electric trucks on XULs farm any time soon? No. But he's not the only one, it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy a brand new electric truck when you can use something used for a fraction of the cost. Performance isn't really a factor on farms. It just needs to be adequate. So maybe in 30 years or so when all the Dodge Rams have rusted even further and all the Chevy silverados have been crashed by drunk 16 year olds there will be electric trucks filtering down farm use.
