How do my BRF cakes look? Suspecting aerial mycelium but FAE is good? (UPDATE)
    #25633865 -

Being my first post, I wanted to say hello and thank you to all who offer help and advice to fellow cultivators!

This is my first attempt with the PF Tek, and my cakes colonized quite nicely. I achieved full colonization in around 2.5 weeks. I continued to let them consolidate in the jars for another 7(ish) days before birthing. I birthed the BRF cakes a week ago (11/16) and today being the 23rd, I've yet to see pins. I dunked the cakes in purified water for 24 hours and rolled in coarse vermiculite, only because my herb grinder was unavailable at the time. They've been sitting in my SGFC, which wasn't made quite to standard, but works really well.

I've been misting my cakes lightly and fanning off excess moisture, trying to evaporate what moisture is on their surfaces. I suspected my handheld/battery-powered fan may not be enough, so I started fanning with the box's lid and I believe it's working much better. I misted way more after the dunk and roll, trying to help the vermiculite establish a nice moisture reservoir. It's not a true casing later, but it works I suppose.

So now for my concerns; some cakes have slight bruising but have been minimally handled. I suspect no contamination but have taken pictures just in case. My cakes all have what looks to be aerial mycelium but doesn't look too fuzzy; it just looks like it's still trying to colonize rather than open up its pins.I see lots of round-like patches of mycelium that somewhat resemble small bubbles around random patches of my cakes.

I just wanted to reach out to some more experienced growers since this is my first attempt at cultivating mushrooms at all. Are my cakes healthy? What can I do? Thank you all so much!
-------------------------------

-------------------------------
(UPDATE):: So, after taking in everybody's suggestions as well as adapting my research, I moved the 8 cakes out of the SGFC to my dual cool-mist (filtered) HC/FC. I proceeded to let the aerial mycelium subside, but this in turn dried out my verm. I slowly re-hydrated the verm via misting over the next 24 hours, and maintained between 95-100% RH.

Went to work today after just misting and fanning my cakes once, came back home to a bunch of small mushies.

Are you misting your cakes directly?

I've since stopped doing that about 3 days after birth, recently I've been only doing the sides and the perlite.

I'm a noob but I do know you shouldn't mist them directly, also it seems like every single thread I see where people use perlite have issues.

Also you should try to use a lot less foil under them. Just enough for them to sit on top, this helps reduce evaporation blockage.

I actually just found this doing some digging, so I guess it was because I was misting directly and too much. We'll see how the next few days go. At least I know they're hydrated. I hope they don't abort. I'll upload pictures along the way.

Misting your Mushrooms and Fruiting Chamber

It’s very important to keep your casing or vermiculite layer on the cakes well misted throughout the fruiting process. Don’t spray your cakes directly, but rather aim your misting bottle up in the air, so that the mist falls gently on the cakes and developing fruit bodies. Most of the mist will actually fall on the perlite, replenishing the moisture that has evaporated into your fruiting chamber or terrarium. I recommend three or four misting sessions per day. Gently mist your entire terrarium until the cakes ‘glisten’ with moisture. Obtain an inexpensive mechanical hygrometer from a local cigar shop, and then calibrate it by wrapping a damp towel around it for an hour. Next, unwrap the damp towel and adjust the screw on the back so the dial reads 99%. Try to keep your humidity level above 95% all the way through the fruiting process.

After each misting, use the lid of your terrarium to ‘fan’ the inside of the box to remove any stale air that may have accumulated inside. With certain species, such as P cubensis, fanning is not usually as critical as with less CO2 tolerant species such as Oyster mushrooms, which will grow large, fat stems and small, under-developed caps if the air in your terrarium is not exchanged enough. Remember that with oyster mushrooms, we usually discard the stems and only eat the caps, so you want lots of bright light and fresh air.

It rains in nature and even baby mushrooms can handle rain.
But not giving them a chance to evaporate off the moisture before you mist again can cause them to abort.

You can mist cakes directly but standing water on top of pins that stay wet for several days in a row
is not the best environment for developing your fruits. That's why my choice of FC is one that doesn't dry out cakes that drastically.

This cake didn't get misted even once and it wasn't rolled in vermiculite either.

There's a balance. If you don't mist your cakes at all, the surface will get too dry for evaporation and good pinset. Too much misting will matt it and cause aborts. In the classic SGFC(Like it appears you may be using) You will definitely need to mist some.

Here's a more visual guide to help you dial it in.

e/ That RR quote is pretty old btw, things change over time. When things were posted is important to pay attention to. The 3-4 mistings a day is a bit excessive ime, it's understood to be "as needed" depending on your conditions now-a-days.

Also remember as other said evaporation and FAE are the 2 key points to when the fungi starts pinning, so try ventilating a little, by removing the top two or three times a day, or maybe put a fan nearby to your SF, but never point it directly. I will also remove the foil, if you already have perite there is no need for it. some indirect sunlight could also help, and maybe some heat. What is the temperature of the SG?

This has some incorrect advice.

Fanning is pointless. FAE should be constant. Unmodded tubs just get unlatched or flipped lids, no fanning. A SGFC has 1000's of holes so it's even more moot.

Don't put a fan near your sgfc. They work on a natural air current from the bottom up. A fan fucks that up.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20195542#20195542

Don't remove foil entirely. Cakes on perlite will have their water drawn out faster.

Yes they need light. Ambient sunlight or a 6500k cfl. They should already have one or the other though.

Temps are fine if it's room temperature. They can be fine a little colder as well.

What type of humidity regulation would you recommend? I've thought about automation with ultrasonic mist/fog or terrarium humidifiers for reptiles. Hooking that up to some sort of hygrometer controller? Something rather?

I've stopped misting the cakes period; my perlite is just being difficult and I keep having to add more moisture to the SGFC and it's only been a week. Best to let them be?

Automation is a trap. you're running a sgfc, just follow the sgfc directions already spelled out.

You have to mist or they'll dry out. Can't tell you if it needs misting or not without images.

Monitor surface conditions: even the most expensive/sophisticated RH meters do little to nothing for indicating the microclimate at the surface... room temp, no gauges necessary, just an eye for proper conditions, and allowing evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the cakes

I experimented with every hole size possible before settling on 1/4" (6mm).  Best performance was with 3/8" holes, but you have to mist more.  Since most people are lazy I settled on the 1/4" size because in most cases the terrarium can be handled with a misting or two per day.
RR

Fruiting Chamber
A SGFC has 1/4" holes spaces 2 inches apart in a grid patten on all six sides. 4-6 inches of moist perlite. No attachments made to it with any extra things like humidifiers. Optimally the SGFC should be in the middle of a room. No fans should be run in the room with the SGFC, but a cracked window is OK. A humidifier in your house can help to raise the ambient RH but don't put it near your SGFC put it in the other corner of the room if you do decide to run a humidifier at all. The SGFC IMO should have at least 6-12 inches of room from any wall on all 6 sides. This includes finding some sort of raisers to elevate the SGFC off of the surface it's on.

Misting and Fanning.
This is a source of much grief and 100's of posts a week here. Misting and fanning is not at all complicated as it needs to be. In general you'll mist your cakes until they glisten(yes they can even with the verm on them) and then fan right after the mist. You can mist your cakes directly and you should. When you notice the cake is no longer glistening you can mist it again and then fan. This occurs on average of 3-5 times a day. Don't worry about sleeping or being gone 12 hours. Just do it when you're around and don't forget about it is all. Fanning is not FAE it's only purpose is to relive the high RH air so that the cakes can get a kickstart on evaporation.

FAE
This is a phenomenon (Fresh air exchange) in a properly built SGFC this is constantly happening. The perlite is naturally cooler than the surrounding air this moves molecules closer to eachother as the lose kinetic energy. This creates low pressure which pulls air up through the bottom holes. As the air moves through the perlite it picks up humidity and keeps the chamber at or above 90%RH. This occurs naturally without the fanning and is why we like to have no fans in the room and is also why fanning after misting is not a replacement for FAE.

pussyfart said:

You would need to fan several times per hour.

:whathesaid:

Quote:
The physics of the shotgun terrarium are that evaporation causes a temperature drop, thus the air molecules are closer together.  This results in higher pressure within the air spaces around the perlite.

The substrates and/or lights provide slight heating within the body of the terrarium.  This results in relatively lower pressure.  This low pressure area above the perlite(high pressure) results in airflow to balance the pressure.  This in turn leads to more evaporation from the perlite, continuing the process.  This is why a shotgun terrarium handles FAE automatically.

The CO2 does not settle to the bottom.  In addition, the CO2 from mushrooms is mixed thoroughly into the O2, thus it travels out through the holes in the sides and top as part of the natural circulation.  It doesn't enter the denser air within the perlite and spill out the bottom.

fewer, you dont want alot of humidity to escape. only enough on the BOTTOM to get rid of CO2

Bad advice.  Fresh air exchange causes a loss of moisture from the cakes or other substrate, and this loss of moisture is the number ONE pinning trigger.  Noobs worry too much about humidity, which is easily corrected with misting.  You MUST mist to make up for the lost moisture.  In the old days, people would toss cakes in a sealed up chamber and hope for a couple of mushrooms before green mold set in.  Today, you can easily get three or four times the harvest the early growers did by using a proper terrarium that provides both fresh air and high humidity.

Furthermore, why you guys think CO2 is heavy like water and will drain out holes in the bottom baffles the mind.  If all the CO2 settled to the bottom, we'd all be dead due to the power plants and cars, cows, etc., that are puking out tons of CO2 by the minute.  The CO2 MIXES with the air and thus must be exchanged WITH the air.  It isn't a sweet little layer on the bottom of your fruiting chambers.

As for only reading 80% humidity in a shotgun terrarium with a humidifier running in the closet, it proves your hygrometer is screwed.  I can put a shotgun terrarium in an open room with the lid totally off and get higher humidity than that.

I seriously doubt anyone has lower humidity than I do.  It's below zero outside and I use a large cast iron wood stove to heat my cabin.  My properly made shotgun terrariums all read 95% or greater.  I keep a cool mist humidifier running near the wood stove, and it's nice and cozy in here, even though there's nearly five feet of snow on the ground outside.
RR

Co2's concentration in "air" is higher at sea level but it's still mixed evenly with the air. Yes gravity does work but it doesn't pull co2 out of the air to make it it's own distinct layer.

even more on the subject

RH
You can't see RH, a SGFC should have no condensation on the walls, Condensation is caused by temperature differentials, if you have condensation you need to fix something. If you want to measure RH the bare minimum in quality for a hygrometer is a analog cigar box one that can be calibrated or a "synthetic hair hygrometer"

Don't get too worried and caught up trying to measure the RH in your SGFC anyway. It's far more important in a green house to measure humidity not so much in your SGFC,

When I put a RH gauge in my SGFC it doesn't read more than 90% all the time, and that's good A-OK just fine, don't worry about it don't measure it, your cakes are going to have a perfect micro-climate if you did the dunk and roll you'll have 99% surface humidity and that's all that matters, FAE is way more important and the RH inside the chamber is just fine for the fruit bodies themselves, if you have low humidity in your home just mist the perlite a bit more often to keep it hydrated it will work just fine and properly if you build it right and follow the damn directions to the T and not try to make your own uneducated guesses as to what improvements you can make. If you must then use the humidifier on the other side of the room or as far away from the SGFC as you can manage.

If you can't be around to mist every other day at the minimum maybe growing isn't going to be an option. You'll miss a harvest and have spore explosion if you cant visit your grow at least 3-4 times a week.

A SGFC isn't an option for me; I have a hard time seeing how it can be an option for anyone with a job. There's no way I'm going to be available (at home) to mist 3 times a day. Add on top of that the fact that sometimes I don't come home at night (staying at the girlfriend's) or have the occasional business trip lasting several days.

It was made by RR when he was working 10-12 hour shifts plus travel plus having a life as a way to not have to babysit cakes. And to handle cakes for weekend trips with no one around. Requires less work than brushing your teeth twice a day. Mist em once in the morning once at night. Basically one of the most automated FCs for cakes that there is.

You shouldn't be measuring humidity anyway. Pay attention to the cakes not some ridiculous gauge.

But if the SGFC is so good that it doesnt need improvement then why does it need to be fanned multiple times a day?

Says who?

Perhaps for 'best' results, it should be fanned with the lid whenever you mist, but the fact is, I and many other people who work long hours have left them unattended and had excellent results.  I've left a shotgun terrarium full of fruiting cakes closed up for over 24 hours, and the CO2 level has never exceeded 1000 ppm.
RR

RogerRabbit said:
The shotgun terrarium already is automatic.  It works based on natural circulation patterns, where air travels from areas of high pressure to low.  I designed it when I was working 12 hour days, with an hour of travel time and couldn't be there for 14 hours per day, and still needed to sleep during that off time.

You mist to make up for substrate moisture lost due to the automatic fresh air exchange, which happens even at 99% humidity.  There is no free ride.  If you put an airstone and bubbler in the terrarium, the slight positive pressure that is created screws up the operation, destroying the entire principle that makes it work.

I've since decided to make this batch of cakes experimental for different types of fruiting chambers. I've since ditched my SGFC and have purchased two smaller containers, and have ditched the perlite. I came up with this to see if I can eliminate misting all together, at least after pins are established. Anybody have any suggestions?

Fruiting Chamber

(I've since gotten rid of the solo cups.)

- Irrigation tubing and an adapter made with water bottles and flex-seal for the humidifier.
- 1/4 inch holes drilled 4" from the bottom of each tub, 2 inches apart all around.
- Two containers, each ~40 liters
- Humidifier with filter

Not to be a dick, but it's a bit of a noob trap to start 'experimenting' on your first few grows. Especially when the 'experiment' is deviating from known and trusted teks without a solid understanding of the underlying mechanics.

Don't worry, I fell for it myself and many others do as well. Just follow the SGFC tek posted above exactly as it is and you'll have a good batch of fruits in no time. After you have a number of grows under your belt, feel free to vary techniques after careful research, using a clone or isolate and setting up controls to test if your hypothesis is valid or not.

Noob trap? I don't understand what's wrong with experimenting with other methods after 1, my SGFC wasn't made correctly and 2, my perlite wasn't retaining moisture which resulted in me misting too much and 3, perlite is messy and costly and dusty and seems to give inconsistent results when used incorrectly (which I didn't drill holes in a 2x2 grid, didn't drill holes on the bottom of the tub, didn't drill as many holes on the top of the lid, and my container was 100 liters for 20 cakes). I got two smaller containers to split my cakes 10/10 just to limit cross contamination if any are contam'd.

At this point I'm just trying to see what works for me with the equipment I do have, who knows. Maybe I could find a better method that works for my situation. I updated my post to include a link instead of a downloadable file -my inexperience using this website.

I'm just trying to save my cakes guys. I appreciate all feedback and suggestions and I've considered everyone's advise thus far.
