Spawning from BRF cakes.

Hi, I have 4 jars of Rye grain that look like they're too wet but if I throw them out they're not gonna be any good to anyone. So I'm gonna take one of my extra, fully colonized, BRF cakes of EQs and see if I can cut into fourths and drop it into the jars to colonize the rye. I'm wondering what would be the most sterile way to do this. (I realize that this will be very unsterile and has a very high chance of being contamed but I might as well try.) I'm thinking if I lightly spray the cake with 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water then that should sterilize without killing the mycelium. Anyone have any suggestions?

Get a cardboard box, cut two holes in the side for your arms, spray the inside with lysol, put your stuff in the box and cover it with saran wrap. Then you can do it inside the box with a much lower chance of getting contaminated. If you want to be extra careful you can tape plastic bags over the holes and make a hole just big enough for your wrist to get through.

I was actually just gonna use the oven tek for the actual transfer... Do you think the box idea would work better?

The oven......... bottom shelf...... on low..... about 150...... best way to prevent contams... IMO. Wipe your spoon or whatever down with alcohol also

use gloves and a sterile knife and cut off the outside of the cake (peel it like an apple) and use the core, this will better your chances of using un-contaminated colonized substrate. i have personally never used the oven tek (i have a hepa filter) but the best the way to find out if it works for you or not is try it.

ignore the oven tek suggestion,
and build a real glovebox,
out of a cardboard box if nothing else.
you'll be glad you did.

I cant stress enough people the glovebox. one can be built so cheaply with anything you can nigger rig togather.
Just go grab a cheap hepa filter, i got one, made by Heptronics or something for 59.99 canadian, so surely it would only be 39.99 american or so, and cut the side out of a rubbermaid container (keep it rightside up) then cut 2 arm holes, and a place in the other end to put your shit in (Trays/jars/pitres/ovenbags) and cover the top with plastic sealed to the rim of the rubbermaide with calking.

I have 2 Honeywell HEPA filters, and the oven door TEK works EXTREMELY well for me. I keep it at 200 degrees however to keep a more constant upward draft of hot air. Peace.
