Well, yeah, this is straight out of the Bhagavad Gita. Ram Dass promulgated this notion in BE HERE NOW. In the spirit of pantheistic monism Ram Dass expressed this notion tinged by his Jewish upbringing that there is only One true God. However, Ram Dass' Jewish Hinduism asserted that there is only One Being, period, which on the one hand relegates the billions of individual egos to maya, illusion, but on the other hand, owing to monism since there is ONLY God manifesting the Eternal I AM as each one of our temporary individual little 'I ams.' The worshippers of other gods in Hinduism do regard them in a theistic way.
Despite the personal flavor of the Bhagavad Gita (Krishna is "the Supreme Personality of the Godhead"), God is not theistic - 'a' Being, ontologically separate from human beings (the position of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). So, given the monistic position, everything is determined and free-will is relative at best and illusory at worst. Morality takes on a different meaning since the East is a shame-culture while the West is a Guilt-culture. If we do evil we feel or should feel guilt before a separate God, but in the East the emotion is shame, based on the assumption that we all know the mystical truth about our intrinsic Oneness with God and that if we do evil we should be ashamed that we are not manifesting benevolent God through our actions.
But again, paradoxically, God is only seen as benevolent in the Gita. There are Kali worshippers, Agni worshippers who throw flaming brands at each other in huge gatherings, and other gods which have been worshipped by rather evil deeds. The Thugees (from which we get the word thug), were given a knife, an ax and a shovel in their initiation so that they could murder, dismember and bury their victims. Kali was a deity fictionally portrayed in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Kali is seen theistically by her adherents.
Lastly, the ego is in the first and most basic form the embodied-ego. It is the first level of separateness that the neonate realizes about 6 months after birth. Baby bites the blanket, the nipple, a toy, nothing special. Baby begins to get teeth and bites his finger, 'ouch!' The difference between the finger, toes, skin, begins to be differentiated from the rest of the environment. Later ego developments become mental-ego. When mommy leaves the room she no longer ceases to exist resulting in a screams of protest and horror. When Object Constancy develops, baby maintains an inner image of mommy which satisfies her for a while. The game Peek-a-boo trains this up. Similarly with Object Permanence. At first hiding a toy and it ceases to exist, baby turns away. But after a while baby throws the covers off the rattle because she has held a mental picture of it in mind, and it is no longer merely a moment-to-moment sensory input.
The ego is necessary for biological survival, but it is not automatically egoism or egotism. These are psychological and spiritual diseases of the identity. The Narcissist and the Sociopath/Psychopath (both disorders operating in Trump for example) is a grotesque distortion of the otherwise health human ego that relativizes its own importance among other egos, allowing for empathy, conscience, remorse, compassion, sympathy, and other socially and spiritually benevolent conditions.
Ultimately, as certain high mystical states reveal, our human identity, human self-awareness IS the Divine Mind. Our 'I' IS the Divine "I AM" misidentified with our body and its senses, thoughts, feelings, memories, and all temporal content. The "I AM" statements of Iesous in the Gospel of John are dogmatically taken to be true ONLY for the nature of Iesous. My understanding is that those words were disclosing the truth for every human being, but this understanding is strictly rejected by Christianity as being heresy, a word from the Greek, hairesis which means 'choice.' I choose to understand the words differently than the established dogma but they make infinitely more sense to us as a metaphysical statement of Reality than if the words identify only one unique specie of demigod, namely Iesous. This is what the myth of resurrection implies, but the knowledge of our True Nature (a Buddhist expression) is soundly suppressed, at times under penalty of horrible death. This gnosis must not be spoken in the West, Westerners cannot say "Tat Twam Asi" (That Thou Art) without immediate ego-inflation and hubris. Therefore the truth must be silently Realized within and that truth properly Realized will result in humility (as Iesous was alleged to have demonstrated), not hubris.
