Yes making them illegal will help make them go away. They won't all go away. You don't need perfection.

We don't have a lot of machine guns floating around this country anymore do we? We know gun bans work because we have gun bans that work amazingly well. We don't have people being mowed down with Uzis because Uzis are banned. :cookiemonster:

And yes, making a gun illegal will mean that only criminals will have that gun. That's not the brilliant insight you people think it is. That's how the law works. If something is illegal, then having it or doing it is a crime. We don't throw up our hands and say "if we make murder illegal only criminals will murder."

If laws worked perfectly, we would have no crime. You guys should stop making that argument. It's silly and embarrassing and makes you look kinda retarded.

I'm just curious if you would mind answering a hypothetical question?

So, obviously, you don't own a gun. I'm just wondering how you would react to an armed home intruder who (for whatever reason) intended to harm you, or your family?

Ive got one for you.

If you were in a position of power and knew that your decisions could make armed home invasion more or less likely what would you do.

Idk it's such a remote possibility that whatever risk it presents, it is not outweighed by the added daily risk of having a gun in your home.

Your question belies your own sense of impotence without a firearm.

I only read the 1 page but it sounds like a lot of fuck'n bull shit

Quote:
Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008.

Another study estimates there are 1,029,615 DGUs per year “for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere” excluding “military service, police work, or work as a security guard,” (within the range of the National Academies’ paper), yielding an estimate of 162,000 cases per year where someone “almost certainly would have been killed” if they “had not used a gun for protection.”

Where are the peer reviewed studies on this?

3 fucking million DGU/year?

HORSE SHIT

That's 8219.18/day and 164.38 in each state/day and I heard of one in MD a few days ago which would have been excluded in the second study

So you obviously live somewhere more fortunate then say Detroit or L.A. home invasions happen all the fucking time it’s not remote for a lot of people

Home invasions happen all the time the same way someone wins the lottery all the time. They happen, but your chances of being a victim are tiny. Infinitesimally tiny.

More then likely, they wouldn't be there to kill me. They would break in to steal some shit, and if armed shoot me as a reaction. Armed intruders exist, so I'm assuming all intruders are armed and out to kill me, specifically those who break in when someone is obviously home. But, as I said before, I wouldn't confront them. Rather, lock my bedroom door and hope they stay out. Thats always been my plan if I ever have to deal with an intruder. If they break my bedroom door down, well a locked bedroom door at night is a pretty big sign someone is in said bedroom, correct? In that situation why wouldn't I shoot them? Shit happens and crazy, irrational people exist. How do I know an intruders intentions?

See, I don't understand this logic. And ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Make your house look like a bad place to break in. I've lived in all sorts of neighborhoods, but nobody has ever broken into my place, or my car, even though I rarely lock either.

I've had people break into the neighbors while I was home.

Hide your valuables, or at least make them not visible from the windows. I like to throw a bunch of papers around my car, not just because it's all usually relevant to my research, but because criminals are people too, and nobody likes digging through trash to find treasure.

I used to live in a shitty neighborhood.  My car was vandalized on more than two occasions, the police didn't care to investigate (i.e., they refused to dust for prints), so I decided to do something about it.  I went out and purchased a wireless CCTV camera with night vision, mounted that bad boy up to my roof, and streamed the feed to a recording device.  At nighttime the camera glowed red because of the infrared light; I think it scared the vandals away because my car was never vandalized again.

I spent no more $200 at Radio Shack for the camera and recording device.  I did the install myself which was a breeze!  Sometimes a visual deterrence is more cost effective than a gun... And probably more effective in preventing crime.

And, guns will always fucking exist, its a fact of life. They need to remain legal because criminals who intend to shoot you will always own a gun, and its nice to have a way to legally defend yourself.

Making drugs illegal makes them go away, making gays illegal makes them go away, making immigrants illegal makes them go away, but making guns illegal...doesn't? Republican logic!

My point was that making guns illegal will not make them go away. Therefore they should stay legal so that people who are not criminals can legally get them.

The point at which you agreed with me was when you stated making guns illegal...doesn't? Obviously, sarcasm was implied from your prior two comments about how making drugs and gays illegal makes them go away, as if thats somehow my thinking. So, you agreed with me in saying making guns illegal will not make them go away, even if you didn't intend to. If you can't see where you agreed with me, you are really fucking dense.

If thats not what you were trying to say, you are really bad at wording comments and probably shouldn't try sarcasm anymore because its not for you.

Okay, so you intentionally misread what you recognized as sarcasm. Brilliant.

I'd probably react by leaving my house. Maybe that;s just me, but not counting windows there are six exits in my house. You'd need a fucking SWAT team to stop me from leaving. Of course, since I don't know of a single home invasion (news included) that wasn't about property instead of hurting people, I really doubt someone would break in to kill me. I know of home invasions involving my friends and neighbors, and they all ended peacefully when someone handed over their wallet, at gunpoint or otherwise.

Of course, this hasn't happened to me. Literally ever. And I live in a rich fucking "rob me" neighborhood. So, don't need a gun.
