Frog is a "special" person. Her brain functions, if that word can even be used, quite irratically. Drugs and her don't get along very well... her reality is scewed.

'Course, it is my personal opinion that mushrooms would be good for her.... but YOU try telling her that.

  Nice try.

The fact is, as I have posted before, both here and in IMs, that my brain and drugs are like fire and gasoline.  What do you think happens when you pour gasoline on fire?

Just to reassure everyone, I smoked a lot of pot, did a lot of coke, did a lot of acid, took speed, downers, Hashish, oil, ludes, and probably a few other things, when I was a teen-ager, into my early '20s.

I started experiencing anxiety and paranoia when I did drugs as I got into my early '20s.  I didn't stop doing drugs because I am a Christian, although I might have stopped because of that eventually.  I don't know.  Maybe I'd be a major drug addict today if it weren't for my built-in mechanism that prevents me from taking drugs.

Point is, I have several brain conditions that I believe prevent me from "partaking".

I believe christians are being categorized mostly in a social context. It is true, most people born in a country predominantly christian - even if not following any specific religion - can be considered christians, because they share the same heritage in terms of community.
It is very hard to detach from that heritage but i think that's one of the main goals of Christ message. As he broke with the Jewish heritage but maintained the spiritual context, i also believe he died to makes us understand that a new life - which many represent as the one after death - is possible while we are alive. If not, then why the resurrection of Christ ?
The mystery of his death is an example of life. The great salvation christians should want to achieve is not from hell, it's from their own mind and misconceptions. It's a personal message, it helps you reborn from a symbolic death with a meaning just as strong as a real death, as the old "you" dies creating an individual capacity to understand yourself and from that point, other people.
Most christians experience Christ in a social context not spiritual. Christ thought us how to free ourselves from that context, i personally had to that as i was born in a catholic country and raised as a catholic.
I don't hate christians, i hate the twisted way they conceive or explain some of Christ ideas. Sometimes i feel sorry about the incapability they have to achieve something meaningful and good with the message of Christ in a spiritual context.

Really excellent point, and I think you drove to the heart of the matter. The "social" aspects of CHristianity v. the "spiritual" aspects of Christianity. Nice.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that you were judging others. My advice mutated into reasons why so-called Christians are disliked. If one adopts the theological possibility of the Orthodox, namely, theosis, we are here to become Christ by Way of mystical participation in the Mystical Body of Christ. Being suffused by the very real Presence, we can then be 'transfigured' into Compassionate Children of Light.

I didn't really think you were chastising me, but just in case, I decided to defend.  Or something.  Always a worthwhile task, eh?

But I agree with you on why people dislike Christians.  Additional reasons, actually.

Frog:

I do not consider mushrooms to be a "drug", I consider it as a sacred fungus from the gods.

I have never related mushrooms to gasoline.

And just FYI, mushrooms are NOT acid, cocaine, meth, crack, speed, heroin, or anything else. They are mushrooms.

You don't reassure me by saying you did lots of drugs in your 20s and now you refuse to even try mushrooms. Anxiety and paranoia...oh no... are the least of your worries with hard drugs. Mushrooms are not a drug, they are a mind catalyst.

I know lots of people whos brains "freak out" when their on drugs, anxiety and paranoia, panic attacks and such... 99% of the time I find that this person is doing it to themselves, not the drug. They convince themselves to "FREAK OUT" because their high or whatever they are thinking/obsessing about.

All I'm saying, is that I do not classify mushrooms ANYWHERE NEAR other drugs. And you shouldn't either, ESPECIALLY if you have never even tried them once.

All drugs are not created equal. Sugar, caffeine, and tylenol are drugs, by the way, and they alter your body chemistry.

DOn't knock it till you try it.

Frog,

I think many people are wary of Christians because of personal experiences with them.

The thing is, is that many Christians tend to have an arrogant air about them, by the very nature of what they preach. The "Only those who accept Christ are going to go to heaven and be happy in the afterlife" thing contributes greatly.

But the thing is, is that Christians, for all their self-assurance in their God, future and faith, are simply people. They make the same errors and mistakes that most people do. Its just the way that we as humans are. We're not perfect. Christians are not better off or really that different from the pagan standing next to them at the line in Walmart. But Christians tend to believe that since they are going to heaven, they *are* different...that they *are* better off then other un-saved people.

This can rub people the wrong way. Particularly when Christians preach one thing, and do another. Granted, they're human, they make mistakes. But having a holier-then-thou attitude gives the impression that they believe they are more then human. Better then the 'lesser' unsaved man who is destined to burn in hell.

Another reason why people may not think highly of Christians, is because they tend to attribute everything in the universe to Christianity. In other words, mental illness is demon oppression, aliens are actually demons trying to trick people, any sort of medical healing is due to prayer, etc. This is only natural for them, since God created the world, but Christians tend to be seen as fanatics because they link everything to their faith. There is nothing outside of it..there is just God, Jesus, the Bible and God's universe.

Really, sometimes it seems that Christians live in a seperate universe altogether from the rest of the destined-to-burn-in-hell people. What makes it worse is that Christians (in this country at least) often try to create or pass laws based off their religion, which rankles a great many people.

Anyway, this was long. I try not to prejudge Christians, despite the bad experience of the past with them. And no Christian is alike, which I think it is important to remember.

I'm new here and I love this forum!

Frog, after reading a lot of your opinions on religion I must say that you seem to be one of the most open minded Christians that I have come across. I live in the bible belt where Christianity is pushed on be on a regular basis. Too bad my Christian friends can't be as tolerant as yourself.

I have a feeling I gave offense, and I didn't intend to.  :frown:

I just meant that when I take drugs, medications, etc., anything mind-altering or that makes me feel funny, I tend to have anxiety and paranoia.  Even natural substances can make me feel funny.

I understand.

Well, my brain is extremely sensitive to what I put in my body.  Too much aspirin affects me because it has caffeine in it, and caffeine accelerates my pulse and makes me feel funny.

I imagine that mushrooms are not your typical "drug", but I was trying to get across the reason why I can't put anything in my body that affects me physically, which is that I feel anxiety and stuff.

I am not dissing mushrooms.  I'm just saying that I wouldn't try them because of how almost everything else in the world affects me, whether a drug, a medicine, or a natural substance.  I don't like how I feel.  If I could do it, I would try it, to see what the experience was like, but honestly, even too much coffee makes me feel funny.  I'm really sorry.

I know.  I had to cut back on sugar, caffeine, etc.  I can't take allergy medicine.  The other day, I took ONE Claritin.  It's supposed to be a non-drowsy formula.  It knocked me out.  But the pollen here in TX is really bad right now, and I'm coughing and sneezing, so the next day I took just a half and although I didn't get knocked out, I had to take a nap and then I went to bed early.

I took Adderall for a while and even the Adderall I can only take 5 mg or I feel like I drank way too much coffee.  I hate that feeling.

Quote:
DOn't knock it till you try it.

I'm not knocking it at all.  I'm just stating that I won't be trying it because of the way substances, regardless of whether legal or illegal, natural or not, affect my body.  It's not a good feeling.

I have had to deal with this in my family, too. I have never extrapolated it to the whole world, but it makes sense.

I was discussing this with someone the other day, and we agreed that it wasn't so much that people don't like Christians. It's more the viciousness with which they display such dislike, especially when there are those around that they may offend.

But I can also understand that if Christians are going around acting arrogant and condescending and judgmental without regard to who they offend, then I suppose it's "paybacks" time, right?

Personally, I'm not going to worry about it any more. I understand now, and it affirms the position I took several years ago, which is that I'm under no obligation to pound my beliefs down people's throats.

Now, I just like to live my life and let others live theirs. But, I won't hide my beliefs, just because someone doesn't like Christians.

Try Triludan from Hoeschst pharmaceuticals instead of Claritin. I have allergic rinitis and i had to ask my doctor to drop Claritin, i had to sleep for a while after taking that stuff.

Thanks, Maia.  I'll look for it.

One more thing about meds, and things that affect me funny...

This morning, I took one 40 mg capsule of time-release Strattera, thinking that maybe I would be benefitted by it because it doesn't have the stimulant effect that Adderall has.  (I have a severe case of ADHD, which I KNOW, I KNOW, doesn't exist.)  The person for whom it was prescribed is supposed to take 2 of the capsules, so I thought one capsule would give me an idea of whether it would work for me.

I've been feeling like crap all day now, anxious and stuff.  Weird feelings in my body. I hate this feeling, as if I'm on the verge of a panic attack.  This is one of the reasons I can't try shrooms, because I hate this feeling.  If I got this feeling off shrooms, I'd be having no fun at all.

And this is what I mean by gasoline and fire.  I mean that my brain just can't handle any substances that I put in my body, regardless of what the substance is.  My brain is retarded somewhat, I guess.
