Someone needs a course in both math and anthropology.

It's a euphemism for our ancestors being algae because some people don't like to hear it.

You can also make money and prosper your genes by donating sperm.
I know a guy who has technically fathered near a dozen children.

Kids are for old people who have the money and time to support themselves and their family.

And who have nothing better to do. And in their boredom set out to propagate and perpetuate this painful mess of an existence. And so the boring, painful story continues.

"...Looking at the turmoil of life from this standpoint we find all occupied with its want and misery, exerting all their strength in order to satisfy its endless needs and avert manifold suffering, without, however, daring to expect anything else in return than merely the preservation of this tormented individual existence for a short span of time. And yet, amid all this turmoil we see a pair of lovers exchanging longing glances — yet why so secretly, timidly, and stealthily? Because these lovers are traitors secretly striving to perpetuate all this misery and turmoil that otherwise would come to a timely end."

The concept of babies is terrifying for some but they do it for the reward of having a child and family of their own.

People who commonly have abortions have kids because they have nothing better to do but normal people don't.
Usually it's a decision made to create and raise a family.

The pain you feel is of your own making and the universe owes you nothing.
There is only pain if you take life for granted and don't appreciate it while you have it.

I think misery only perpetuates if individuals don't genuinely love themselves.

one thing we know. This civilization does like others suffering. it likes imposing suffering on us, especially if poor or black and/or love freedom,  but when we naturally respond with the pain of it we then fall into their insidious catch 22 esq net of mindfkery telling you via 'experts' that we have a 'chemical imbalance' which needs 'treatment' with THEIR drugs, and/or ECT etc!!!

So this means you are made to feel ashamed about suffering, and are coerced to take 'happy pills' which are supposed to be 'anti-suffering'.

Hmmmmm

But isn't suffering then telling us something intelligent? Something we should be aware of?

what does this illustration remind you of as well as 'happy pills ville'? Well to me ALSO 'meditation/mindfullness'. This to me is the Eastern (and now cum western) version of social control! 'all is suffering' so sit with eyes shut, contemplate your navel UNTIL you become placid and don't think ommmmmmmmmm

How so? Have you read S?  Can you give an example?  Seems to me from my reading and I've yet to read everything but I'm working on it,  there is agreement.

Also I asked you a question further back concerning something you posted.. Maybe you missed it.

and Lakefingers

And has man ever found a compelling reason for his suffering or can he? What is it?  Do you think Nietzsche did considering his end? If not can we justify bringing others into the game?

I think historically with Christianity it was thought that, while perhaps suffering served no direct purpose, you would be rewarded for your toils in the afterlife.  The last shall be first and the first shall be last stuff.  So in that sense, many people toiled with the expectation that they would be given high station in the hereafter.  It's hard for me to think of an example of suffering having much meaning or purpose other than that.

And personally, I don't think there's any justification for bringing others into the game except for people's selfish subscription to the notion of the good life or the "American dream" or whatever.  That you settle down, have kids and live happily ever after.  The time has come and gone to start taking responsibility as nations of the world for doing something about the egregious overpopulation problem -- even in first world nations.  That will never happen, I know.

Naughty boy schopenhauer [Re: Jokeshopbeard]
    #22951623 -

I think it is pretty easy to grok why philosophers like Nietzsche found Schopenhauer ultimately so questionable in the end.

An antinatalist like Schopenhauer could make a practical point of human ethos in view of the reality and fact of suffering, (in the actual sphere of a western liberal's consideration). Instead you see these heavy handed rationale about human nature, and the birds and bees.

It helps to realize Schopenhauer's reading of the veil of maya is almost transparently and appropriating of indic philosophical doctrine to western tastes (Platonism, Kantianism). He may have said some provoking things this way, but I'd say it's just better to look to the indic sources themselves rather than this early and typical kind of "western buddhism".

Nietzsche was right in that sense, but it was his time and we can potentially read much deeper into eastern philosophy today!

I try to be grateful for my suffering, and not think of it as a "problem" that needs to be eradicated.

When I notice my suffering, I remind myself I'm alive, and that everyone suffers. And, ultimately, suffering doesn't matter.

Some people draw a big distinction between pain and suffering. For example, if you get hurt in an accident, that's painful.
If the injury means you must change your career, and you become angry and depressed about that and start getting drunk
every night, that is suffering. As has been said, pain in life is inevitable but suffering is optional.

BTW, humans have designed Heaven to be a place absent of suffering, but I think
people would be interested to discover how dull and sterile life would be without suffering.
Look at the pain and suffering we enjoy and eagerly consume in our entertainment.

Well then let's close all the mental health facilities. The taxpayers could use a break.

Even if we "eradicate" a lot of imo unnecessary suffering there will still be plenty to go around.

If my sufferings are mild, and many are, then I can be grateful for the lessons learned but when someone is seriously  clinically depressed then just try and get them to be grateful when they can't even get out of bed.

I seen nothing wrong with you having your beliefs on this for yourself. You may be right or find one day you didn't know enough about it but whatever.  I have a problem when someone thinks their beliefs on issues like this are reasonable for others. That's a very difficult call to make rationally.  We just don't know enough about it.

Do you believe it is possible to have a plot of land and live close to the earth? I am not saying this is every person's goal today, but it is for some few people.

I agree that the thrown or embedded existence of western people, particularly Americans, seems to be critiquing the structure of liberal institutions, and recognizing their extent... and their limitations.

My take is that the rationale of western people since Christian times, is all too extensive. For example, superficially the point can be seen down to this discussion, which strayed from the consideration of ones "own" suffering (which could initiate a dialogue, or bring some to some recognition to its nature) to talking about gross suffering of children in Africa, and global population. It is fit to wonder why, (not that this is wrong to think about in general.)

There is definitely as much limitation in the present, sprawling notion of "managing" nature's resources, or suffering of the world per se. These are not just alotments in the old testament sense. People hail new religions, in the old pattern.
