protein supplements
    #20996268 -

So I have been working out quite a bit lately. I am naturally stocky and seem to build muscle easier than most guys. My roommates drink these protein drinks all the time. One of them has more muscle than me but his chest is too big imo, almost breast like. The other one is skinny but ripped. Is there really a serious advantage to consuming these supplements? The really muscular one has the powdered protein and the ripped one jus  drinks muscle milk drinks. I don't want to get huge, I just want to be full so that my diet is essentially just protein and fiber and I can get ripped. I already eat mostly just chicken and fruit and veggies and a little bit of carbs which I am trying to cut out.

if you already eat a fair amount of chicken, I see no point. Its more a thing of conveinience and price imo. postworkout I hate cooking, and I want something to recover quickly and move on with my day asap. So a 1-3 bananas and 2 scoops whey does it perfectly

I usually don't consume my protein after working out though

If you're getting enough protein from whole foods, shakes aren't necessary. Supplements are simply that - they SUPPLEMENT real food and fill in any gaps in your diet. A protein shake straight after training can be beneficial since it's a quick, easy way to give your body the nutrients it requires for recovery. A lot easier than taking a meal to the gym with you. Otherwise, Food > Supps

I disagree with the posters in this thread.  Why protein is supplemented into a healthy diet as it's the most bioavailable form of protein, and is readily broken down by your body to help you recover much more quickly and efficiently.  I've eaten well and worked out (sort of) and while I noted strength building I would still wake up sore and miserable, but when I supplement in whey protein isolate as well I can tell that I recover much more quickly and wake up without the slightest bit of soreness.  You could also throw Creatine into the mix as it'll give you an approximate gain of 10% in muscle strength, though you will lose that strength when you stop supplementing it so it's meant to be used temporarily to push harder toward your goals.

Generally protein powder is combined with Branch Chain Amino Acids which also assist with muscle recovery. A proper amount of sleep is also very important.

Creatine is great, one of the few over the counter supps that actually work. My advice with creatine is to avoid big brand names. You can buy a bag of generic brand, lab certified Creatine Monohydrate off eBay for like $15, where supp companies charge 3 - 4 times that. Also, general consensus is that Creatine does not need to be cycled. You can continue taking it indefinitely with no sides. I've been taking it almost every day for about 3 years now

Yeah, I buy all of my supplements generic from purebulk.com.  That being said, NOW Foods whey protein isolate with mixed in BCAAs gives them a run for their money price wise.  Honestly, check out bodybuilding.com, and see what's out there, then go shopping with the intentions of price gouging as much as possible; supplements and general healthy living shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Its best to eat protein before AND after a workout. Most protein should be eaten post-work out.

Supplements are just a convenient thing and they are low in calories, so you have lean muscle.

Personally, I like the Cliff Protein BIG bars. They are filling and have like 18 grams of protein. Perfect for post-work out snack.

My personal opinion; the main supplements for general health and strength that I would recommend are a probiotic, mutlivitamin, creatine. Those in my experience have helped me round out my nutrition. Protein powders are great post workout but ime havent done much otherwise. Clearly other posters disagree though

Good point, most people only do it after, but before and after is optimal.  I've never seen those specific bars, but I'd imagine they're just as overpriced as the ones I have seen around.  Another quick tip to increase muscular output and endurance for a better pump is to take a baby Asprin and caffeine about fifteen minutes before you hit the gym, weight room, bike trail, etc., whatever you're doing that day as a workout.  Also your body utilizes glucose the most efficiently directly after a workout, so get that insulin pumping by taking Pixie Stix with you and downing one as soon after your workout as possible.  Just thought I'd share a couple cheap ways to get better results for yourself OP.

Big mistake dude. If you have ever studied biochemistry you should know that 1 mole of newly synthesized peptide bonds requires 4 moles of ATP. Therefore you need a lot of carbohydrates in your diet. But you need carbs with low glycemic index that is carbs that are released slowly and maintain a fairly constant level of insulin. Insulin is the most powerful growth hormone in the body.

Therefore I suggest you eat oats and brown rice. Also protein shakes are ok but do eat a lot of fish, nuts, chicken and eggs (take the white from 4 eggs and the yolk from only one cause you don't want too much of that fucked up cholesterol).

Also eat a lot of salat bro. And eat every three hours. Eat and get huge.

Your skinny ripped bro has less body fat. Your big bro friend consumes and retains more body fat. That's their body type but also their eating habits.

You can achieve any body result you want with whole foods or with sups or a mix, as long as you're following a properly structured diet.

Also muscle milk contains toxic heavy metals.

Why would I want to be huge? Huge guys look weird imo, like they are compensating for some sort of insecurity or something. I just want to be lean and healthy, with more of my weight made up of muscle. Also I have no idea what that other shit means but thanks anyway. Is hummus a good source of carbs with low glycemic index? I eat a huge salad with all different kinds of vegetables on it almost every day and way more than 6 cups of fruits and veggies

I don't mean weird huge I mean chicks going aah huge. Like ripped but not skinny ripped. I don't know about humus but you should probably eat it (see if you can get the low fat variety). So you're already eating lots of salad and fruit thats great. I am eating some mass gainer which is like 60% low GI carbs 30% protein with some good shit filling the other 10%.

So anyway, I suggest you do a lot of leg exercises in the beginning. Training your legs (which represent a huge muscle group) results in the production of big amounts of testosterone which helps upper body muscles grow as well.
