Protein Powder Question
    #10021356 -

What do you recommend for a Protein Powder?  I plan to go pick some up today.  Do you have a particular type I should buy?

It's for weight lifting and I'm really skinny.

Regular whey protein. Doesn't really matter what brand, just don't pay extra for some bullshit additives. I'd just go with the cheapest brand you can find.

if you want protein powder, try hemp.
or if you choose whey, I hear Jay Robb is a good brand, all-natural.

I would personally advise against any protein other than whey or casein. Get a whey casein blend for sure, that includes Muscle Milk, syntrax matrix and some ON Whey products. If you want just the whey ON Whey is the best for your buck, its packed with tons of amino acids and it tastes better than anything else out there. If you're in a rough spot like me and still need protein get some Body Fortress from Wal-Mart for $12!

If you're real skinny I would go with the muscle milk just because you NEED calories and its got more calories than most protein powders. And remember MILK and OATS, those should be the staples of your diet along with eggs and meat.

I've gotten great results with optimum nutrition whey:

A proper diet and lifting routine is key. Whey protein alone won't do much.

if you want to gain weight mainly and not just increase protein intake. I would suggest getting an actual Weight Gainer over a Whey Protein. They both have the same amount of protein (or comparable) however Weight Gainer has about 900-1200 calories per serving

I use MuscleTech, Mass-Tech

Each serving with milk is 1250 Calories with 57g of Protein as well as tons of other vitamins

That is what I would suggest. I also take NO-xplode to help give me a boost during workouts. Love the stuff. Its nice to help focus and intensity. Its creatine based

Whey - casein - egg albumin

Those are the ones you want. No soy and such.

Any high-quality whey protein isolate will do. Do up a serving immediately after session of weightlifting, and down something fairly sugary at the same time as it. Whey is pretty much only effective for recovery though, throughout the day you should find more of a Meal Replacement type of protein shake, like Muscle Milk. Eating tonnes of eggs & drinking milk & muscle milk, sometimes adding a half scoop of whey into your servings throughout the day. Stop using the muscle milk if you start to get fat, lol.

Whey is generally a good choice due to the price and how well it mixes. Just keep in mind that you are limited on how much you can absorb at once. Also keep in mind that a lot of factories putting out protein powders are sold under different labels, including GNC, Optimum Nutrition, Vitamin Shoppe...

Food is a good way to go though. I also dig mixes (whey, casein, egg, and soy) as long as the price is right.

Cottage cheese is a decent protein source too.

Grab some ice cream and make a more authentic shake. I did the chocolate in chocolate (or vanilla) ice cream and it was str8. and then i got some strawberry bananna muscle milk that tastes much better when added w/ some chocolate icecream

For a post-workout shake, stick with whey, or egg based protein, they are have a fast absorbtion rate, which is what you want for your depleated muscles after  a good workout.

For more of a meal replacement, liek someone said above, get casein, or a whey/casein mix, like musclemilk, but dont have this after a workout, it wont kill you its just not ideal.  Casein is a slow digesting protein, which makes a good meal replacemnt

Go with the most protein for your dollar, i will often times find the shit on clearance and buy that. Just be sure to consume it before it expires.

One of my bodybuilding mags had an article saying that recent studies show that a whey/casein postworkout shake has been showing improvements in size and strength up to 40% more than just a whey postworkout shake alone.

Gaining weight can be very hard for some people. I've tried quite a few brands over the past few years and I'd recommend Cytogainer (by Cytosport) for a weight gainer/protein complex or Muscle Milk as a meal replacement(which you would take as a 5th or 6th daily meal). Truth is you gotta eat eat eat in the kitchen, pack yourself and extra sandwich for lunch etc. I was able to put on around 25 lbs in a year or so.
