Proper amount of gypsum with coir sub
    #18354767 -

I've been searching posts to figure out how much gypsum I should add to coir/verm substrate and RR suggests about 5-10 % per DRY volume.

How in the hell to I figure that out if I'm using a compressed brick of coir?
I've got to hydrate first to get any idea on what the volume would be.

Lets put it this way: I have 6 quarts of field capacity coir/verm sub. 5% of that by volume would be 1.2 cups. I just added 1 cup of gypsum to my already wet sub. Is this too much to the point where it will hinder the grow?

I normally add 1/4 cup pelletized gypsum per brick of coir. Has worked like a dream.

Stick hand in bag of gypsum...  make fist... pull out and drop in mixing bucket....

Close enough for me.

RR said he has gone down to 3% with no noticeable performance loss.  More won't hurt, just wastes gypsum.  A few growers use 1 cup per brick, I have been using half cup but I think I will go to 1 cup.  Actually considering the verm, 3% of 14 quarts is 1.68 cups.

Remember that pelletized gypsum is much more dense that granulated.

I don't like the bucket tek, I put my sub in jars and pasteurize on the stove. Unfortunately, I also don't do large enough grows to use a full brick at a time. Normally about a 1/4 brick. So I guess I really over-did it. 1/4 cup might be a good spot to start I guess...

It's the same thing.  They just take powder gypsum and add a binding agent so it will flow through automatic spreaders on large farms.  If they tried to use powder gypsum it would jam and clog the equipment.

Use as said above about 2% to 3% gypsum by dry weight.  If you just have to wing it, simply add a handful of gypsum for every 50 or so handfuls of your substrate.  I used to use ten percent, but have since found that less is just as good.  If you have a low calcium water source(soft), you might use a bit more, and if your water supply is hard, use a bit less.

You don't have to dissolve the granular gypsum first.  Just mix it in to the substrate and it will fall apart when it gets damp.

When blending the pelletized gypsum, I've always ended up with much more by volume.

Also when not dissolving the pelletized gypsum, oft I find expanded chunks of gypsum in the substrate that i am left to crumble during spawning.

Agreed pasturize on the stove inside jars,  but buckets are perfect for mixing and hydrating your substrate...

As far as hard water goes, I'm stuck with well water, and push 9 on ph lol... (don't know why they didnt put in city water when they ran sewer to our area)  sucks to have to use bottled water for my indoor plants...

You could use less gypsum then.  pH9 is awfully caustic.  My well water runs around 8 and works perfectly for mushrooms because the mycelium tends to swing the pH down over time.  It also works great for plants with a bit of citric acid to bring pH back to 6.

Don't blend it.  Besides, if it doesn't all dissolve, the chunks won't hurt a thing.  The mycelium will still get what it needs.

RR is that a handful of gypsum for every 50 of WET substrate? My whole dilema here is that I'm only using pieces of a coir brick so I can't really figure out a dry volume.

Damn, dude, you think way too much about this.

Grab a big handful. Throw it in.

However much that ends up being, that's the right amount

Pretty much what i ended up doing. bulk into my mixing bowl. and sprinkled over some gypsum, um yeah that looks right lol

Interesting what RR said about soft water and hard water. Its softwater where i live. We have very good water out where i am and im pretty close the water plant where it comes from.
