Is coir really necessary?
    #3805817 -

...The casing layer is supposed to be hydrating but nutrient-free, no? So why do we bother with coir? I made two 100% verm little casings today.... do you guys think it'll work? I got pics, but not too interesting yet...

Thanks

Sure verm works but it lacks an optimum microclimate so yields are directly affected. Coir or peat based casings have a superior transpiration over verm alone along with a better surface structure. Bottom line verm works but if you want to take it up a notch then go with a recommended mix such as 70/30 coir/verm or 50/50+ peat/verm. GL

I find that casing mixtures with a high amount of coir tent to overlay easier than mixtures without or only with a small amount.
Thus I never use more than 30% coir and the main ingredient is peat or peat based potting soil.

Isn't Jiffy soil mix about 50/50 peat/verm with a pH stabilizer?

It would be a lot easier just to pick up a bag of that for a couple bucks and use it.

perfect that the type of explanation i was looking for... thanks a lot. I let these babies fruit up and see what happens, then maybe in the meantime i'll be able to find some coir so i can try next with that too! thanks a lot...

and tis jiffy mix.... is that right? it sounds pretty simple adn perfect, so why don't people talk about it all the time?
