Eco earth coir from petco...
    #24988802 -

Until recently I have been getting the 3 brick pack of Eco Earth coir from my local petco. The last few weeks I've noticed that my local store no longer stocks the three packs and instead only sells a 8 dry quart bag of shredded coir. Has anyone else noticed this transition at their local stores? Im wondering if this is just a local thing or possibly store wide?

I noticed a bit ago, I asked the store clerk and they explained that all those hurricanes a few months back did a lot of damage and now they can't get as much. Idr the details but I was told something along those lines.

Sometimes they just run out. Its not a highly sought after item. For pets atleast  u think that shredded stuff could work?

I buy this stuff from my local hydroponic store. It’s like $2.50 a brick or something like that

It would work as its the same thing...I believe one of those bags would be equal to roughly one brick? I personally just like to stock up hence why I would pick up the three packs. The bags are a little more expensive vs buying a single brick also. Ive got a few qts to spawn so I guess ill be driving around a bit to other stores to compare costs.

No the stuff im talking about isnt the same. I know what ur talking about, but they also have the shredded coir. Its more like sticks. Like, not regular coir. Much much coarser.

If u cant find what u need, home depot sells straw manure and verm. 50lbs black kow $5. Bail of straw, $5, big bag of verm, $20. That would make a shitload of substrate.

Cubes love straw too. U could probly use just straw and verm for cubes if u use a high enough spawn ratio.

If they don't have the bricks petco or petsmart then get this instead.
Petco
Petsmart

It's what I use and works great plus it is already broken up which is a plus. 8 qt for about 7.00 is a good deal you can even get 24qt bags for like 14.00. Make sure to price match there website its usually cheaper on there then in the store.

Keep in mind this coir is already prehydrated. You'll have to know the exact weight in lbs or kg and volume amount in qts that a brick of coir hydrated via the bucket method to field capacity is to know the ratio of water to add to this already hydrated coir to get field capacity right.  :pimp:

Or slowly add water and mix till field capacity is reached. That's how I hydrate my casing materials.

Yeah, You have to use less water with the shredded stuff. like 2 quarts to 650 grams.

Thats what i was thinking.
To pasturize it could just fill quart jars 3/4 full and set in pressure cooker & fill water to the level of the coir and stick a thermometer in it and heat water, Or fill oven bags and use oven? Those bags of coir are only $4 for 8qts. How many qts are 3 bricks?

I stick to hydro shops. Using botanicare currently, 5.5kg i think. In the past I liked canna coco which comes in a two pack of bricks with nice holes for rapid hydration.
