problems finding gypsum
    #3314252 - 11/03/04 10:54 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Well i'm going to be giving rye a try for my first time pretty quick here and i've been having problems finding gypsum... I know gypsum is reccomended when using rye and i'm not sure why but i can't find it anywhere. i had no problem finding coir, verm, or the rye berries where I live, but for some reason no one has gypsum. Is there anything else that can be substituted for it?

Any way i've had several successes with WBS, and have never used gypsum... does rye stick any worse than WBS?

You should be fine without it. Make sure to shake your rye after cooking, this will help to loosen things up.

Good luck!

Isn't it just for calcium for adjusting the higher pH level of the rye? Isn't lime a substitute for this?

no, it is used to keep it from clumping together...

i was finally able to track some down, but now i'm unsure when i'm supposed to add the gypsum. Do I want to add it while i'm boiling the rye, or do i want to add it into the jar when i'm loading em?
