Direct lighting a problem?

I have a huge rubbermaid container stashed under my bed. Access to "natural" light is probably impossible. Can I put a small flourescent light (one that wouldn't generate much heat) inside the lid? The lid is well above where the cakes will be so that is not an issue. I only ask because the PF Tek says that direct light is bad. Does it really matter? Along the same lines... can such a small light with the blue part of the spectrum that shroomies love be purchased at a hardware store or Home Depot? Under what name? Thanks ahead of time for replying to my post, Mycostodge

Well if thats all you can really do, then i don't think it would be much of a problem. At best you will just have to keep a close eye on the heat. I belive you need a light in the blue range at 480 nanometer's....thats what i've read from info given to me. I belive any small house plant light will do you fine. Homedepot in my area has these little lights in as small as 15w. Pretty cheap too. You shouldn't have any problems finding something similar. Sorry i can't remember the name. Before you go out of your way and purchase one of these, wait and see if you can get some more help from others that grow in a small space. Good Luck!

The problem with having the light inside the terrarium is that it will affect your humidity level. Aside from giving the shrooms a sense of direction, light really doesn't have much of an effect on them. Even blue light, I've found, is over-hyped!

Things could get too hot in there. Can you place the light on top the rubbermaid?
