If something "supernatural" did exist, would it not then be part of the natural world?  Therefore, by definition, the supernatural is something which does not exist.

Well, the normal exists and also the paranormal.  Similar.

What is natural seems to be agreed upon or a consensus.  What is supernatural is beyond this agreement.

What? What is natural has nothing to do with human perception.  What exists is natural.  Do you agree?

What if there were no humans, would the natural world not exist?

Ok well from my understanding supernatural is that which science hasn't been able to answer. Thousands of years ago people would look into the sky and see stars moving. They called it supernatural. Now we call them planets. Obviously science hasn't answered everything in this universe or anything under the veil, or even if there is a veil, so I think of it as supernatural. That would make the psychedelic experience supernatural under that definition since science is baffled by that experience as well. Accept you really don't know anything and that your supernatural experience is unique to everyone else's.

Yes, but now we know that it was wrong for people to call lightning, or the stars "supernatural." So why would we continue to use that word to describe things we don't understand?

Science can only go as far as our own two eyes. You can't hope to even try to answer everything in reality with it. Even the psychedelic experience is unknown after the psychoactive substance binds to our 5-HT and 5-HT2 receptors. Every human emits a frequency just like a television and every time it switches a new "channel" comes on. Science will never be able to answer this unless we fully understand our brain. So I hope that helps in why it's impossible to actually come up with scientific proof. We must first completely understand our brain and mind. It's a lot harder than cracking our genomes.

Instead of just saying "oh, we'll never understand the brain, therefore anyone can think anything they want," some people actually try to understand the brain.  And the science of the brain is ongoing (and making strides).  And everything that we have learned about the brain so far, indicates that things like ghosts are just delusions.

As complex as the mind is, there is no reason to believe that the nonsensical things that many minds conceive are real.  What is more likely: that there are actually ghosts of dead people walking around, (but conveniently, no evidence of this), OR someone is delusional.  It seems pretty obvious to me.

look at nature like  a bottomless ocean, or outerspeace. Look into sapce---the Hubble photos. Can you see a wall at the back there? Do you think IF you were to travel at the speed of light you come to a sign which says. Sorry 'the end' please turn round and return? Or....?

Well this is how I see nature. I do not separate nature from that vastness. That IS nature. It is depthless mystery as is consciousness

Because what other word would you use to describe something that transcends our own perception? We can only explain what we see with our own two eyes. Now we have made technology to see into space but there's still more beyond that. There's still more within us we don't know. The only thing we can do is try to explain it one at a time. That's what science is. Relentless experiments one at a time tweaking variables until there's proof of a theory. Understand that there's always something further and that it will always baffle us until we keep relentlessly trying to figure it out, and maybe eventually figuring it out. That will definitely not happen to me in my lifetime though.

Are you saying that lightning was at one time "supernatural," and now it's not?  That just seems like a poor use of the word to me.

Thank you.

There is zero difference between the following two statements:

(1) "There is a Santa Claus, but I can't prove it."

and

(2) "There are ghosts of dead people walking around, but I can't prove it."

I may have intensely experienced the existence of Santa Claus, but that doesn't make it true or objective.  To say that "ghosts exist because I have seen them" makes the existence of ghosts neither true nor objective.

Adults do not hold open the possibility that even though science has not proven it, there really is a Santa Claus.  We recognize Santa Claus as a product of our longings and desires.

Similarly, belief in the supernatural is also a product of our longings and desires.

You make supernatural sound like it's on a pedestal. It's just SUPER natural. At one point Greeks thought lightning was from Zeus. They believed in the gods doing everything in nature. It's just what we can't describe in nature. So essentially yes lightning was once supernatural.

Oh?

It seems reality is a little bit more complex then you will allow into your own beliefs.

The hocus pocus maintains the secrecy effectively.

You are the example.

Interesting you should say that.  I think you've put your finger on what divides our outlooks.

I think that reality is much much simpler than my very complex brain can fathom.  When you read the accounts of the mystics, you see that one of their overwhelming experiences is that of the sublime simplicity of things.  The utter and perfect simplicity of things.

But being a living organism in an ever-changing world is complex business, and our brains adapt.  Our brains add layer upon layer of complexity.  Emotions.  Intellectualization.  Stuff that allows us to function in a dynamic changing environment.

And our brains add "ghosts" and "ESP" and "reincarnation" and all the other oh-so-complex figments of the human imagination.

Not to put words in calm_dude's mouth, but I think what he's saying that since it naturally occurs, it can't be supernatural by definition because it is natural. And taking it a step further from lightning, anything that happens in nature can't be supernatural.

And while I understand what you're saying about lightning, we now know better, and can say that it isn't super natural. If, hypothetically, ESP exists, then it wouldn't be supernatural, it'd just be natural because it's occurring. What I believe the OP was getting at was the idea that the word supernatural doesn't even make sense. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

It's "supernatural," in my opinion, if it operates outside of the objective and provable realm of things.  So yes... if you were to submit evidence of the existence of ghosts -- objective evidence -- ghosts would not be "supernatural."

"Supernatural," for me, is the garbage bin containing the make-believe creations of our imaginations.

If there is a funny person throwing Lightening-Bolts I surmise that would be out-of-the-ordinary behavior from what you typically see.

Also, thrown Lightening-Bolts are Qualitatively Different from Naturally Produced Lightening-Bolts.

There is another thread around here about Lightening Bolts hitting the Vatican recently;

was it Coincidence or were they THROWN Lightening-Bolts?

Respectfully, that's hocus-pocus bullshit.

Here's the thing.

There are millions and millions of people who allege having had encounters with the supernatural.  Fine.  Are you telling me that not one of them has been able to submit evidence of it to the scientific community -- evidence that would for once and for all close the debate on the subject?  Not one?

The reason no one has been able to prove any of these supernatural events in because of what is accepted as proof. How can you ask for physical proof of the supernatural or otherwise spiritual?

Its the same as my dream last night, in which i was working in a store and kept messing up until i got fired. Now i cant give you any physical proof other than my verbal/written testament; but that dream did infact happen.

The only reason people believe in other peoples dreams at all, is because they themselves experience dreams. If other humans didn't have dreams, the dreamer would be labeled with schizophrenia, or some other mental issue.  Same goes with the psychedelic experience.

And that is the reason why you have no "proof" of supernatural events.

Yup that pretty much sums it up.  The supernatural doesn't exist by definition.  If we define the "natural universe" as what exists, the supernatural is that which does not exist.

Of course there are things we don't understand.  But why would anyone call those things "supernatural"?

What?

People thought lightning was supernatural. That doesn't mean it was "supernatural," or existing outside of nature.  We now know that lightning occurs naturally, and so it was never supernatural.
