will any of us reach enlightenment?
    #1797786 -

Are any of us here at the shroomery going to reach enlightenment?

Surely the pursuit of wisdom needs our full concentrations. 100% of our time spent working for this goal.

I think for me I will never atain true wisdom, hopefuly I will learn a lot and find inner peace though. lol hehe

Some would argue that the ego death is enlightenmnet, but im sure some buddhist monk dude would disagree.

Will any of us ever run the 3 minute mile? To answer that question, first I look for role models; i.e. someone who has been there before. As no human has ever been close to that mark, the answer is probably negative.

Will any of us ever run the 4 minute mile? To answer that question, first I look for role models; i.e. someone who has been there before. A few people have, although they have ALL been young and male and supremely dedicated, so that we know that it is possible for some.

Back to your question. Do you know for certain of anyone that has attained enlightenment or is it all anecdotal stories of great men from past times?

Amen to that. I don't know how enlightened ill get, but right now i feel pretty enlightened. Im now walking with the buffalo, and living in a monestary in tibet, sue me. For what my life is right now, I feel I have taken control, came to terms with my beiefs and my true nature, and have found inner peace, and as far as i know self enlightenment. There is ALWAYS room for improvement, so until im at the bottom of the food chain, completely humiliated, being the food and energy source for the whole world without taking anything in return, i will not be fully enlightened ;] but for now, i like to think im doing pretty good.

Is it even possible to be "enlightened", or is "enlightenment" really just a set of emotions and feelings that delude a person into believing they know all.

Enlightenment is real. Just because you two haven't experienced it, doesn't give any more real credit to your questioning of the existence of enlightenment.

To think that "the ability to see things exactly as they are" and to "not suffer from pain, loss, attachment, etc" is a false reality, then you are only kidding yourselves.

Enlightenment is real.

And you know this how?

A. Because I wanna believe.

B. Read about in the New Age section at Barnes & Noble.

C. I am already there.

D. My guru is definitely enlightened.

Depends on what Enlightenment means... a Buddhist who merges with the Universe finds Enlightenment, the Nazi who suddenly realizes that all of the world's problems are caused soley by Jewish people finds Enlightenment, and the two-year old child who discovers ice cream finds Enlightenment...

Enlightenment is a very personal thing. However, if you are refering to this specific Enlightenment: "A blessed state in which the individual transcends desire and suffering and attains Nirvana", then hell yeah it is possible. Will any of us reach that state? Entirely possible, most of us definitely have a head start.

The question is, will any of us fully dedicate ourselves to it, to reaching Cosmic Consciousness? I never see myself fully reaching that, but I can see myself getting very close. Actually, I couldn't see myself staying in Cosmic Consciousness for the rest of my life... maybe trying to reach the state when I feel it is necessary, since I still have a life to live, to experience. To stay in that center means to give up your life, any desire to do anything.

I think that myself, I am well on my way to finding what I am suspossed to find... and I'll enjoy every minute along the way.
Peace.

In buddhist tradition there are four stages of enlightenment, called Sotapanna (stream-entry), Sakadagami (once-returner), Anagami (no-returner), and Arahat (worthy one).

The first stage, sotapanna, is a person who has overcome "wrong view" of the self. This is usually accomplished by having a moment of insight in which you see that the self is just a mind-construct that has no independent reality.

I don't see why it should make any difference if this moment of insight is produced by deep meditation, or by constant mindfulness, or by psychedelic drugs, or by having a near-death experience.

The second stage is when a person from the previous stage is able to diminish his or her attachments and angry emotions.

The third stage is when a person from the previous stage has eradicated all attachments to the sensual world.

The fourth stage is when a person from the previous stage has also eradicated the final attachments to the self.

At all stages except the fourth, people who have experienced enlightenment still act in delusional ways sometimes. At least according to Buddhism. I'm not sure what to believe, but it makes sense to me that people who have experienced enlightenment and are on the path to complete awakening but are not quite there yet, can still be conceited idiots.

Anyway, I don't think there are any drugs that can help you go from stage 1 to stage 4 in these stages of enlightenment.

You got it backwards. It is the deluded emotions and attatchments that get in the way of enlightenment. I think there are certain degrees of enlightenment.

Swami, when you have reached a certain point in your evolutions, and have come to terms with both yourself and nature and others, you will no longer need to front and hide behind logic.

You are an intelligent being (seemingly, anyway) and I don't doubt you'll find the right path. Until then, lighten up and try your best to learn with an open heart, rather then a thick skull.

Good luck, and please don't take my advice offensively.

As is typical of "those on the path" you do NOT respond to my question, but instead present your total misperception of my persona. How very enlightening! (and tedious)

I have a question for Swami, do you think enlightenment is real?

That is the question that I posed earlier. On what would I base it? I have never knowingly met an enlightened being; so all that remains are anecdotes.
