The Fourteen Questions to Which Buddha Remained Silent

I think it's because those questions don't matter. You can't find peace if you're always asking questions.

Anatta, is the observable basis of Buddhist knowledge.
all of the questions in that list are based upon not understanding anatta; if a person knew anatta they would know the questions are not questions for Buddha, or for Buddhists. (i.e. they are less relevant than how to cook beef brisket for vegetarians - are we vegetarians gathered here today to discuss the theory of cooking meat? - but Buddha is gentler than that.)

People have burning needs and often wish the guru to satisfy these needs which turn the whole thing about dharma upside down. When they are taught something of value, they may ignore it, and bringing forward their burning needs, they sieze the attention of those gathered to the matter of their obsession - this is not what the gathering of students is there for.

This core knowledge of Buddhism is not accessible to every person at all times. The best that Buddha could do when a person is obsessing with irrelevant questions is give that person nothing but a remote gentle smile.

The silent smile is a very deep instruction by example of non-involvement.
It is better than chastisement, it is better than another wasted review of dharma to a person who is wrapping themselves in obsessive idea processing, the wrapping has become impenetrable, unwrapping is - what anatta is about.

At that moment, in that situation, the silence is a "how to fix" dharma.

Nonsense imo.  You can ask all the questions you want as long as you aren't attached to getting answers.

They are unanswerable and that's why he couldn't/wouldn't answer them.

in the politics of the gatherings in which these questions were recorded,
the silent answer was suitable.

not that the questions are unanswerable,
the silence was a more suitable response.

yes you can ask any question you like, and explore any discussion thread you like, every question is answerable:
the context of the question, and the answer are not technical refinements they are integral to eachother - i.e. context is everything; even in physics.

so tell me, which of those questions have a reliable answer?

all questions could be said to have reliable answers in suitable contexts
it's the democratization of context that reduces questions and answers to gibberish - and if the class is not listening, sometimes silence is the best answer, and the best way to point out that the student was not listening, and the way the silence is delivered can be more informative and useful than any of the above.

the Buddha's behavior predated chan and zen by several centuries, but he was not limited to answering questions using a mandatory oral dialogue format;
and his silent responses could be taken as enlightening, for those with eyes to see.

i agree. answers and questions cannot be engaged in without context. within a particular context something can be said to be true. this doesn't mean that it the Ultimate Truth of Reality. for example, if you were taking a test at your local christian church and the question was asked: who is god? the appropriate answer would be jesus christ. does this mean jesus christ is god? i dunno. probably not.

Nice how you contradict yourself.  First you say all questions can have an answer in some context and then go on to say that you can't use any context it to find ultimate reality.  Well my question is what is ultimate reality?

  I'll stick with "crock".

Seems to me that the Buddha was well aware that these big questions most use to distract themselves from getting down to business are unanswerable.  He had a plan for liberation from suffering and  that was what he was offering and it had nothing to do with the questions most people were/are asking.

Knowledge of Right Action, Right Thought, and Right Word is what liberates from Ignorance.

Ignorance is the root of all suffering that Sentient Beings have endured.

that depends on the context within which you ask the question. within a buddhist context ultimate reality is freedom from suffering. in a christian context ultimate reality is god's love. the way i like to think of ultimate reality is Truth with a capital T. the Truth of everything.

Hey!  Why do you have a problem with using the capital letter G as in God.

How the fuck are you Falun Dafa Hao.

I am hobbling around with motherfucking nail wound and nerve pain that would have you in hospital with morphine drip passed out cold.

I have no more green weed left and now must go to already vaporized stuff that looks like tobacco.

I will go fill a bag in a few minutes.

Chucking Lightening Bolts sends a pleasant fucking tingle up my arm that complements the nerve pain that reminds me how I recently came back from

HORRIFIC spiritual annihilations I endured beyond countless on a daily fucking basis transmuting Original Sin.

How the fuck are you doing today?

Why don't you check out Zhuan Falun?  It's a lot better than that fluff and nonsense you would find from

OPRAH'S Book of the Motherfucking month CLUB.

You're just upset because Oprah's Book of the Month Club is Clownish when it comes to Spiritual Knowledge.

best to have two kinds of derailment in play in a thread
one sided derailing can get pretty disappointing.

now we have crock and Oprah's book of the month
this establishes a more complete context
any  question that relates to both must be true
the answer however will always be either Oprah or crock or both
