If I remember correctly, Margaret Mead (Maybe it was another female anthropologist..:strokebeard:) was one of the most brilliant anthropologists the world has seen, and she did not have a degree nor did she attend school. She just went out into the world and traveled and experienced the people and cultures and learned that way...

One does not need to marginalize oneself with titles of grandeur and a piece of paper to validate that title to contribute valid information to any given field of study.

Mckenna didnt accomplish anything though, and he wont be wrtitten about in any textbooks.  He is a fringe theorist and amateur ethnopharmacologist that made no great contributions to any field of study.  All he did was talk a lot amd do a lot of drugs.

That's bullshit.  He popularized the experimentation with these substances the same as Leary did. That's not nothing  Quit seeing things so black and white.

I don't think that's accurate.  Psychedelics were popularized in the 60s by people other than McKenna.  Shrooms and DMT were well known way before his 15 minutes of fame.  I first learned about psychedelics in a Transpersonal Psychology class, lol.

so? he's still influenced a ton of people in this generation what can't relate to guys like Leary. Still with the black and white dude. How may threads here are on TM compared to TL?

Ya, if anything he just carried Leary's torch.  Hes an unoriginal, uninteresting person.  I didn't learn anything from him and he didn't influence my decision to try psychedelics.  I'm also 20 years old, so that should tell you something.  I also relate to Leary more than McKenna.  If all McKenna did was create buzz about psychedelics then he is a failure in my eyes.  Leary did that and a whole lot more.  McKenna wasn't a part of a revolution, he was just a regurgitator of psychedelic ideals.

He's no more a failure imo than you are.  Gee 20, what a surprise.

As I said I prefer Leary too but I can appreciate McKenna not that I have to compare them.  He legitimized the use of psychedelics for many and that's a very good thing imo. Plus I think he had a genuine good heart like Leary and that's no small thing either.  The world could use a whole lot more of that imo.

Yeah, that's my point in a sense.  McKenna is just a spokesman whereas Leary has much more to offer than "Psychedelics hit the spot, 500 micrograms thats a lot".  The only reason I compare them is because they are both spokesmen.  I'd rather learn about R. Gordon Wasson or Al Hubbard than McKenna.  As a popular psychedelic spokesman, I think Leary is superior to McKenna.  The first psychedelic spokesman and popularizer was Al Hubbard anyway.  "The Johnny Appleseed of LSD"

I haven't seen much from McKenna of any personal value. I actually like the idea in the video you posted though (didn't watch it but read the title and I think I've heard the talk before). Culture as your operating system seems like a pretty good metaphor imo :shrug:
