I'm an extremely stable schizophrenic person. Would mushrooms be bad for me?
    #14899338 -

I've read that schizophrenia  shrooms = bad. I've read the same thing about weed and I do fine smoking.

Here's the thing, I take my meds as directed and I am no longer schizophrenic, AT ALL. No voices, no paranoid delusions, just normality.

Would taking shrooms upset something inside of me that's being suppressed by the medication? I don't know too much about how the human mind works.....

If it DID have a bad effect on me, would I have a bad trip and then nothing bad after that, or would it permanently screw up my brain?

I'd say it's still a bad idea. Also, what meds are you on? They will most likely stop any effects from psychedelics, so to get effects, you'd have to stop the meds which would have schizophrenia symptoms return

I'm on Zyprexa and Abilify. Zyprexa is an anti psychotic, I think it somehow effects my seratonin, Abilify is an anti-depressant. I'm not depressed, it's just that Abilify maximizes the effects of the Zyprexa without giving me the nasty side effects of a large dose of Zyprexa.

I'd be willing to waste money on "it might not do anything" but at the same time, I don't want to mess around with my meds in order to get it to work. I would literally have to stop taking them for 3 weeks to get them out of my system and cold turkeying Zyprexa is a death wish.

Just remember to weigh that with the possible negative effects, your gonna know those better than me. Be smart with this as it could end badly, stand back and make a mature educated decision. Especially if you're young, you don't want to affect the rest of your life for the worse. It's your life and yours to do what you want, I'm just offering you my perspective.

If you do decide to go through with it, start very low and if all goes well, work your way up.

I think there was a thread a while ago about the possibilities of psychedelics making schizophrenia go away, I think someone had tried it

EDIT: found it http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14833244#14833244

no one tried it though

this honestly has BAD written all over it. the reason why schitzophrenics and hallucinogens dont mix is they can amplify a condition you already have....and thats not really a door you can close once its been pushed open.

Abilify and zyprexa arent light medications, you saying that your totally stable sounds like a real good thing and you shouldnt give that up so easily especially if you "just want to hallucinate and see fucked up stuff."

Alot of people are going to say dont do it and some are going to say they were in the same boat as you and it really helped them but at the end of the day your the one who makes the choice.

i personally am a "better safe than sorry" type and wouldnt do it.

PLUS like previous posts you would likely have to get off your meds for a few weeks just for the shrooms to work on you and even then they might make your schitzophrenia WORSE.

It sucks but my best advice for you would be get into meditation and lucid dreaming/OBE's they are not EXACTLY like tripping and definitely no where near as easy but they are something for now to work on.

hopefully in the future you can get to a point where you dont need the meds and at that point then MAYBE think about psychadelics and even then at smaller than normal doses and work up.

but your gonna do what you wanna do just make sure if you do decide you wanna do this you check up your contraindications, some meds and phychadelics can cause FATAL reactions!

be careful
be educated
be smart

good luck!

lets assume the worst happens and you progress to a catatonic schizophrenia... I said WORST...

you're gonna be fucked if it makes your condition worsen.  Do you wanna risk having to be on even more meds, or possibly losing touch with reality?

Yes.

I say acid is a safer bet.

Im a very stable schizophrenic person myself but when I eat mushrooms I totally dissociate, get delusional and think Im people who I am not. I cant handle myself in public on mushrooms anymore...I could at first but even a small dose now and Im rambling about things I have no comprehension of and neither do other people. I think Im in Jerusalem or Lima or something when really Im in Indiana.

You dont want to eat mushrooms on the meds you are on anyway though, they have a bad interaction.

here is the thing im toying with
meditation is you controlling the chemicals being fired off in your brain (self induced)
eating mushroom and neurotransmitters are sent to the brain (self induced)
so i feel that even meditation could be too mind expanding

actually if you dont mind me asking, while you wernt on medication, and you had symptoms, how were your sleeping habits? did you ever dream? op please, is if you want, tell me more about yourself, im very interested.
DMT has me really interested in the brain as a muscle right now. schizophrenia has always been my prime interest in the subject.

i dont have a feeling of lack of control when i take mushrooms unless i overload my body with more than an eighth(more neurotransmitters than my brain is able to flex)

many people are very afraid they wont return, and that they have lost control of their brain, when first leaving their body's, while astral projecting.

yes, but we are talking about a diagnosed mentally ill person here, and he's not asking about astral projection or lucid dreaming.

This is a person with schizophrenia asking if they should eat mushrooms.  Any person in their right mind (pun unintended) would not suggest the OP eat mushrooms.

that's about where I stand.  OP is going to do what he'll do, but I don't want to be part of encouraging this and then have him return with progressed symptoms from it.

which is why i suggested OBE's or lucid dreaming its a break from the norm of life but doesnt fuck up your brain chemicals and he wont even have to get off his meds to do it. the previous poster who said that meditation could possibly effect brain chems in the way shrooms would.......highly doubt it. to the best of my knowledge no one has ever meditated and it made their mental illness worse. people doing shrooms or other psychadelics MANY accounts of it aggravating psychosis.

exactly, im just saying that maybe he should be careful with meditating too
so what i said was dont go and tell him to meditate when you really dont know how that can effect him (let alone a schizophrenic)
i was pointing out that even with meditation, the end result could be the same(he said he wanted to see shit and lucid dreaming and astral projection are the best ways)
im saying they can both be equally dangerous

edit: btw i never told him to take them at all, or was i defending anyone who wanted him to
i was saying that meditation could ultimately be just as bad if he gets very good at it. (ie: some people lose control of the meditation state at very high levels, it can be extremely terrifying scaring [pretty much you unable to control it])

both are NOT equally dangerous lol. meditation has been proven time and again to have nothing but positive effects on the brain. saying meditation and psychadelic drugs can have the same negative effects is a poorly researched response.

was meditation and while having schizophrenia ever proven time and times again to be loads and loads better for them?

well he said he wants to trip and see shit
so lucid dreaming and astral projection are very extreme forms of meditation, there is no doubt that it can have an impact on the person. good or bad
im just trying to say that we really dont know what goes on in his head and if traveling deeper into his mind would be a healthy thing for him to do.

also we aren't talking about making him better, he wants to have fun. he said so

fun doesnt always equal better. you obviously havent done much research on meditation (which for the record theres a whole bunch of evidence and personal sites that suggest meditation is also good for schizophrenics.)

this back and forth is starting to annoy me.

im telling OP to stay off drugs and maybe try meditation which has numerous positive effects on the mind and body no matter what age or mental status.

your telling him that it could have just as bad effects as doing a psychadelic......which it wont.

moral of the story OP, if you have read up to this point....DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH DONT RELY ON PEOPLE ON HERE FOR THE HARD AND TRUE ADVICE.

If you can handle your weed pretty well, then I owuld suggest you get your hands on some good haze hash and don't smoke it, but eat it. (or drink it, make hash butter then you can mix it with nearly everything)
When eaten instead of smoked this can get you a decent psychedelic experience. It's not comparable to mushrooms, but it is a whole other experience than smoked weed.

evidence regarding schizophrenics that astral project and come back safely every time? no sadly i dont,
but i wish there was some research on it so we could actually know for sure before telling this guy its safe for him to do.

i actually believe that there is a point to where it isnt meditation anymore, its just your mind let lose and free with no direction. or maybe you hold on to a little train of thought

which is why i  really dont like calling astral projection meditation. its what you get to after meditation.
thats the name for releasing "your own dmt"(or your own form)

we just dont know enough about it all
the spiritual side is the easiest way to explain it (spiritual is simple, scientific takes evidence)

edit:if there is another way to trip balls without drugs other than astral projection or lucid dreaming (which is just a less intense astral projection) please let me know

so your argument is that because theres not studies that show there are positive OR negative effects on schizophrenics who astral project (which anyone who is into meditation knows you dont astral project overnite it usually takes a while, months even years for some people.) that it shouldnt be done?

whereas there are LOTS AND LOTS of studies that show doing psychadelics is a BAAAAAD idea for schizophrenics.

just using your logic soley. (which in my opinion is flawed) im gonna go with the lesser bad of the 2. the one that no one has ever benefited negatively from. meditation/OBE's/Lucid dreaming. talking from a scientific standpoint.

dont throw in the spiritual angle because this isnt a spiritual issue for this guy.

Don't know about mushrooms yet, I hope they still work with the combination of medications I'm on.

Try it, you might have a great experience, or find out that you should never do mushrooms again. Then again, it might not work for you.

first off let me clarify that i am no longer talking about meditation in general. im talking about the state called astral projection, and the road of learning leading up to that level. the one that you hallucinate extremely easily in, the one i would assume he would want to try if he was going to not do the mushrooms.

next. no that is not my argument. i am not arguing. i have continued to state/clarify my case as you attack my beliefs over and over.
i am 0% spiritual
i never once sad that he should never try it. im saying, "be careful when going really deep, its uncharted land." i was warning that the high end meditation can be very much similar to psychedelics but that these higher states in meditation are not nearly extensively research as the drug world is. which is why one really only finds "spiritual facts" on astral projection and not as much science. it sucks.

i didn't throw a spiritual angle. where did i say he needed to be spiritual?

my logic is flawed? it could really be your logic that is flawed, but you and me might never learn whose logic is truly flawed.

Quote:

overnight? were we talking about how long it takes to become a master astral projector? did i say he was going to do it in a night?

just because all this time we didn't know about it, its not something we need to possibly fear? im not saying it happens, im not saying it doesn't. im just saying be careful.
i have in no way, ever, told him to do anything but be cautious, almost anything can make schizophrenia worse.

Don't do it! The risk is too great. I had a friend who had been acting a little bit differently but nothing worrying at all. He was always with us when we tripped and became more and more curious as years went by. We tripped with him on one hit of acid and that was that. No one chills at his place anymore. He covered himself in tattoos. He thinks the free masons have tapped his phone line, that there are cameras in his house, that he's being tested by the masons secretly. He thinks celebrities direct their songs towards him and claims to have discovered the meaning behind the bible. I hate the thought of it but he should be on meds. And I hate the guilt I feel as well. Psychedelics are strange in the way they open up your mind. He shouldn't have tripped, it opened up and spilled over parts of his psyche that shouldn't have been touched. Now I don't trip with anyone who hasn't previously. Unlike any other category of drugs, the psychedelic profile is very unpredictable.

I'm a pretty mentally stable person (diagnosed with ADHD as a kid, but i think ADHD is an excuse for shitty teachers who cant keep kids attentions) and this is the kind of thing that makes me ambivalent about trying Psychedelics. I dont have any experience but i would say dont do it or if you must be in an extremely comfortable environment with only one or two loved ones or very close friends.

I'm really sorry OP but i'm going to have to recommend against doing and psychedelics.

All drugs affect everyone differently, but the reality is psychedelics make psychotic disorders worse most of the time.

Also, your are on powerful anti-psychotic drugs which will probably stop the psychedelics from working at all. This would mean to take psychedelics you'd first have to stop taking your medication and i'm sure you realise how that's going to end.

If you decide to go ahead anyway, please be careful - alcoholics can get liver transplants and crackfiends can get false teeth, but you only have one brain and it's irreplaceable.

I do it pretty frequently without any negative effects. Not saying that that means that OP should give it a try, but I was willing to take the risk to find out if I could still safely trip. Turns out I can.

I've not read the thread OP but I'm assuming that people are against the idea of you using psychedelics. This would make sense as many of the symptoms of psychedelics mimic those of full blown psychosis.

I would like to offer you a different perspective. If you want to experience something DON'T let your illness hold you back. If you want to experience the magic that is psychedelia than DO IT. Make sure you're aware of the risks and decide for yourself weather or not your want to take the risk. Remember you only live ONCE and you should at least seek out the opportunities to do things you'd like.

Despite the fact that psychedelics mimic psychotic symptoms in "normal" individuals AND more likley to bring out psychotic symptoms in "psychotic" individuals at threshold doses, there is no proven correlation between long term psychosis and psychedelics. Sure there's some anecdotal evidence but I wouldn't base my decision on that.

Ultimately mate it's up to you. Life, consciousness, thoughts and perceptions are all a precious, mysterious and wonderful gifts. You are the master of your own destiny and if you would like to trip than I think you SHOULD do it. After all, I'm sure the sadness brought about your knowing that you can't do something, would in fact be worse for you mind than actually tripping.

I wish you the best man :peace:

There's definitely evidence that says people with mental psychosis of any kind can have their symptoms exacerbated by psychedelics, even weed can bring out symptoms in otherwise stable individuals...isn't that just common sense at this point? there is however only anecdotal (and pretty shotty) evidence to say that it directly causes mental psychosis. But that's a totaly different ball game.

I believe my friend who snapped would have snapped eventually. But I will never get to know for sure. He thinks people are plotting against him and he's the only one sane. He thinks that's what tripping is about, finding connections between unrelated, unconnected concepts. If you're already on meds I would not fuck with it man. These drugs aren't worth it. These experiences can be had in different ways. Psychedelics remind me how much I love my friends and family. Stuff like that. No secrets to the universe. It's not worth it. I know it sucks but that's how life is. If everyone who wasn't mentally ready to trip didn't trip we wouldn't have all these crazy stories about people jumping out of windows etc. Go somewhere nice, wake up in time to see the sun rise, and be happy to be alive. That's all you need man.

You need to just know your mind and how you feel about the world around you. I know you are schizophrenic, but how is your mental state right now? You say you are doing fine, that's great! The medications are working, but more importantly for a mental disorder, you must have found it in yourself to overcome what seemed an unreal, hellish experience, come back, and make sense of the life around you.

This makes me think you are strong and able-minded. You have been able to deal with the reality you have been given and make sense of it. This is you. How many mentally ill are prescribed medications but never seem to get better, or get better for a bit and then become worse again? Yes, medication will help, but if it is a mental disorder, is is you who must save yourself. And you have. Mentally ill are led to believe they are delusional, sick, and not in control of their mind, when really we are all in control of our mind. But who knows where our mind will take us? The trees, the streets, the sky, reality is based upon us, our brains, our perception. There is no reality outside your eyes - you take in a scrambled mess of molecules and atoms and associate and make sense of it. I truly believe that if the mentally ill were talked and treated more normally, then they would be able to find sense in their world again. We take 'normal' for grant it, considering there is no such thing.

So while I think you may be mentally ready for a trip - I also have to weight out the other variables. This medication you are on must be having some effect on you, stopping it might change things up, and even if you are at a point where you could stop it, taking the psychedelic would switch things up even more. Also, the psychedelic experience is an event all on its own, normal people freak out and psychedelics too. Most of them come back fine, although a little shaken,  and you must be prepared for this. Also, I must say that people with mental disorders have made it worse by using psychedelics. However, a few have also cured themselves. How? Probably how you look at the experience.

If you smoke weed and feel fine that is a good sign, as many people can easier eat a shroom then take a hit, but that doesn't mean you will be completely fine on shrooms. They are different substances and shrooms are much more profound, though I will say being able to handle your high is a definite good thing.

Finally, although you may be curious, is it really worth the risk? You say you already smoke cannabis... so you already have a great substance that you can use to relax, chill, and get a little psychedelic fun out of. Cannabis can be very psychedelic, especially at low tolerance. Your already smoking weed, do you need to go further and try shrooms? If you are able to drink alcohol, then you are really set, haha.

Problem is, we take these substances to get divine knowledge, but the knowledge is right in front of us, with every breath we take. It's about loving life. It really is.

And this whole thing about meditation being bad for the mentally ill is absurbed as it gets. It is probably one of the best things you can do to quite your mind and bring you to a state of peace and understanding. Astral Projection and Lucid Dreaming is just the icing on the cake, and I don't think those are harmful either as your own brain is doing it without the use of foreign chemicals, but they may be more profound.

Ultimately, there a lot of different things you could do in life and shrooms is only one of them. I don't think with your conditon being as good as it is you really need to risk it, so I would personally have to advise against it, but ultimately

it is your choice, you must understand what is best for you and do what you feel is truly best. If you do this, you will be fine, whether it is taking them or not

If anything is "fucking" you up, it's most likely these meds.

Listen to this:

Terence McKenna: Schizophrenic or Shamanic?

I'm assuming you have a very vivid imagination. Don't be scared of it, but embrace that imagination in a controlled manner.

I suggest you consider meditation (at first), and then work your way into lucid dreaming and astral projecting.

If you get a good grip on these things(especially meditation, thought control, channeling energy around your body, etc.), somebody with your imagination has a very good potential for magickal work.

Anyways, I think you should really consider dropping your medication. I mean, they might help you in the beginning, but do you seriously intend on taking them your whole life long? Probably not. Now, do you think that getting off the medication "latter on" will be easier than it is now? NO, it will probably be harder. You'll get "used" to them (addicted, in other words).

I'm no physician, but I just don't trust all these chemicals that "Doctors" prescribe today.

How often do you smoke weed, if you don't mind me asking? About a month ago I went on vacation (South Carolina and Florida). I'm from Canada and, obviously, had no "contact/dealer" down there. I was "forced" to quit smoking for a little more than 2 1/2 weeks.

It cleared me up tremendously, and now when I smoke just ONE joint (mind you, I used to smoke 3-4 daily), I get VERY VERY high to say the least. It's almost like a mild mushroom experience. I have clairvoyant flashes (this is hard to explain. Clairvoyance is being able to see the "other worlds/dimensions", which you can train yourself to do with consistent meditation and all that fun stuff. When experienced, it's almost like a picture on top of a picture...if this doesn't make sense, I totally understand. No wonder Shpongle named one of their albums "Inexpressible Tales".) I've only smoked 2 since coming back, leaving 4 days of non-smoking in-between. I will probably want to keep it to once/week...makes the whole experience very mystical and "enlightening", as opposed to stoning everyday.

This whole story to tell you....how about experimenting with Cannabis first? This'll "prepare" you for that 6-8 hour roller-coaster which mushrooms are.

Good luck, and whatever you do...it's ALL in your head

Hey OP I am by no means a psychologist but one of my best child hood friends is a schizophrenic. Before I knew he had this condition and I assume he didn't know either we would take hallucinogens together with no real intense repercussions. He was more paranoid than the rest of us but not to the extreme. Things took a sharp decline for him when he went to his cousins wedding out of state and claimed to have smoked what he called "speed" but sounded like meth to me. He described the high as extremely long and intense and he got stuck on C-SPAN. He became infatuated with the idea that some how "big brother" was watching him through the TV and would drone on and on about his own person conspiracy theory.

Getting back on track...
My best friend changed over night because of a bad trip, I'm not saying do it or don't but one bad experience sent him into a paranoid downward spiral. And of course we are all unique and react to things differently :mushroom2:

Oh and hes on a stable med regimen. Doesn't partake in any illicit mind altering substances any more. And seems to be back to his old fun loving self

It always mystifies me why people diagnosed with schizophrenia feel the need to take psychedelics.  Why not just go off of your antipsychotic medication for a while and see how that goes?  If the delusions and hallucinations are fun, keep at it.  Otherwise, get back on the meds.  Consider yourself "lucky"--you get to sort of "trip" without having to purchase or manufacture an illegal substance.

Of course, there are differences between most people's tripping experiences and most people's experiences of psychosis...although part of me suspects that it is theoretically just as possible to have pleasurable, grandiose, spiritual psychoses as it is to have pleasurable, profound, spiritual trips, and likewise, that it is just as possible to have horrible, terrifying psychoses as it is to have horrible, terrifying bad trips.  It all depends on set and setting...but if one is psychotic and sort of "tripping" all the time, it's hard to constantly guarantee a good set and setting, and it would be mentally exhausting to be living like that 24/7, so I understand why it's not quite fair to say to schizophrenics, "Cheer up, mate!  According to Terence Mckenna, you're just "shamanic"!"

Been lurking here for 3-4 years, but this post finally drew me out. From the OP:

Quote:
Here's the thing, I take my meds as directed and I am no longer schizophrenic, AT ALL. No voices, no paranoid delusions, just normality.

That paragraph punched me in the heart.  OP, you are a young man with a manageable brain disorder who seems to have it under control for the moment.  There is no way in hell psychedelic drugs are going to "fix" the disorder.  The only reason for you to take psychedelics now is to have fun and experience new brain states (ie, get fucked up).

Which is great.  I fully support experimentation in getting fucked up.  But you have an underlying schizophrenic disorder.

It has been 50 years since psychedelics have been widely experimented with.  The conclusion is that they are quite safe, but can exacerbate problems in people with pre-existing mental issues, particularly schizophrenia.

Dude, psychedelics are awesome and I recommend them highly in general, but not to you.  Long term you are gonna need to hold a job, find a nice girl, raise a family--responsible shit like that.  You can't do that if you are schizophrenic.  You say you got the disorder under control now.  Why fuck with that?

Well, the having kids thing is optional, of course (I didn't have any).  But having a job, a couple of good friends, and a squeeze are essential to long term happiness.  Do you disagree?  That is hard to accomplish if you are constantly hearing the trees talking to the powerlines.

Or are you arguing that it is "no-worries" for him to take psychedelics when he is prone to schizophrenia?

Yea Not a very good idea, Zyprexa Antagonizes H1 histamine receptors at serotonin receptors, Psilcybin, psilocin are agonists of serotonin receptors in the brain, where it mimics the effects of serotonin]

Your meds block serotonin to your brain, Obviously your condition causes for this dew to your schizophrenia

and the compounds in the mushrooms would exacerbate, your condition, by increasing serotonin, Your symptoms would be 10 times worse

im no expert, but these are just thoughts, take them into consideration and do some research

Lol its amazing what wiki can do

there is no telling how it is going to effect him, this is just something to keep in mind

It's a serious and possibly life changing decision. You don't want to take psys on a whim. You have to look at how well you've been doing and determine if you feel that you can trip out safely, or at least with minimal damage to your mental wellbeing.

http://trancenet.net/research/2000perezdealbeniz.shtml

Meditation CAN make things worse for a schizophrenic, just like a psychedelic can, because after all you are exploring the subconscious, and because you are tapping into it, you are opening doors in your mind whether it be from psychedelics, mediation, astral projection, obe's etc.
A schizophrenic person has a very fragile mind state and their subconscious should not be tapped into unless they know what they are doing/where they are going in their minds. And if they know they can handle the experience/ the consequence from tapping into and opening a specific part of their mind.
Meditation is just a much milder form than psychedelics of tapping into your subconscious, and it does open doors, such as when you get "enlightened". you are on a higher level of functioning, an altered sate of consciousness when you are "enlightened", some schizophrenics might not be able to handle the process of their mind elevating onto a different level of functioning because of their fragile mind state.

I dont think schizophrenics could handle being on any elevated state of consciousness just because that could take them to a really bad place in their minds by opening that "door".
However, I dont mean schizophrenics shouldn't practice meditation, because it may help them IF they know what they are getting themselves into /what doors they are opening with it.
Meditation is pretty safe because it's such a light form of tapping into your subconscious and its also controlled so if you feel you've gone too far or a place you shouldn't of in your mind, you can always stop.

I have a theory that if a schizophrenic were to practice tapping into their sunconscious and "safely" opening those doors then eventually they could build up to psychedelic use.
As by that point it shouldn't have negative consequences on their psyche if they have explored their subconscious through other means before and know it in and out by safely opening all of those "doors". They would need to start light though, first exploring themselves through mediation as that is the safest, then astral projection, obe's, lucid dreaming etc. gradually strengthening themselves for psychedelics. Like a step by step psychological exploration/strengthening process. It's essential to start at mediation though because it's "guided", lack of a better word, as in you're "guiding" your self through the process. (i.e. you can stop whenever you feel you've gone too far in your psyche)

I think this is the only way a schizophrenic person could ever prepare themselves for a psychedelic experience w/o any harmful effects coming out of it. they shouldn't just straight jump into the psychedelic because that isn't "guided", like mediation, you can't stop if you've gone too far into your psyche. The same can be said for astral projection, obe's, lucid dreaming etc. If you jump into those straight away with a fragile mind set you can probably cause more harm than good, even if you can control the experience by how far your mind dwells into it, unlike with psychedelics. Thats why it's crucial to take it a step at time and start with the most "controlled" method of exploring yourself, meditation. Slowly and safely moving furter and further in your exploration of yourself through astral projection, obe's, lucid dreaming etc ultimately building you self up for psychedelic use.

just my 2 cents, sorry its so long, just wanted to put all my thoughts down. but thats what i would recommend for the op if he really wants to trip:cool:

mushrooms can help to heal "schizophrenia"

just follow your heart and take everything doctors, or anybody for that matter, tells you with a grain of salt. learn to trust your intuition. afterall, there's a reason your brain is generating this idea of eating them.. what does that tell you?

That first link was a complete pile of shit, stacked onto another pile of shit, stacked onto another...well, you get it.

I'm sorry, not to come off as an asshole, but the reasoning they offer is naive, close to being childish...to say the LEAST.

Quote:
Sense of Failure

For some people, the urge to meditate is strong. Despite investing much time to learn how to do it correctly, they fail. Therefore, the person grieves the loss and feels worthless.

LMFAO, do I need to say ANYTHING about their reasoning? It's like they are describing a child who was not able to put together his new set of Legos....ridiculous. We are talking about adults here, who are most likely able to move on with their life without "grieving" (oh man, this is comedy) at their inability to meditate. The true seeker will always find a way to make meditation work for him.

Quote:
Covering Up the Problem

Louis Nordstrom, a professor and Zen master, was abandoned by his mother in childhood. To help deal with his pain, he would meditate. Although he found comfort through meditation, he realized he was continually going through bouts of depression. He discovered through therapy that meditation was only covering up his pain (detaching himself from his emotions and others) and not treating it, thus leading to the bouts of depression.

Depressions are normal when you start out on a spiritual path. With meditation comes so-called 'inner-knowledge'. However, knowledge that is unknown or uncovered is frightening to people, just like the random sounds out the bushes in the dark forests are frightening. It might just a be a squirrel, but it will still scare most people. To put it short, when you start to experience "supernatural" phenomena, or things out of the "ordinary", one it very likely to get scared....not because these experiences are dangerous, but because they are "unknown". They can't be explained "rationally".

Anyways, the mere fact that ONE case of a person dealing with depression is mentioned as a reference makes this whole article that much more ridiculous.

Quote:
Detachment Techniques

Detachment techniques are meant for nuns and monks, meaning they take a vow of celibacy, poverty and obedience. People practicing some types of meditation (such as Buddhist or Hindu teachings) have become depressed because they have been cut off from life.

Most (if not all) monks and nuns CHOSE to be monks and nuns. They chose a life of poverty and obedience, because they most likely didn't see how money would make them happy.

Now, celibacy is a different subject, since it is a basic human urge/need...but, again, these monks and nuns CHOSE to be just that, and knew what the "price" was to pay.

I don't think I need to go on.

And btw, I didn't bother with the second article. Just the fact that you brought these articles up in a serious manner leads me to believe that you yourself haven't actually meditated and don't know what you are talking about. Just the same ol' "oh, I'll just post some links I found online..that'll make my case.." If you HAVE meditated and STILL chose to post these articles...well, I see it hasn't helped YOU much.

Whichever the case, these articles aren't worth a read for a serious discussion on meditation.

Retard, I have schizophrenia.

Also, I take LSD pretty frequently. Doing psys is a big gamble for people with schizophrenia. They could end up homeless, hurting people or hurting themselves.

It's a serious decision to make. You don't just take them because your brain is telling you you want to do it. It feels great, of course your brain wants to do it. That doesn't mean shit.

I know a close friend of mine who is borderline schizophrenic, bipolar, and suffered from full blown psychosis that landed him in jail for a month before he was bailed out. At one time, he told me the story of how one girl in a party slipped him some shrooms so she could have sex with him. He ended up having a bad trip that consisted of demons, zombies, satanic images...the works. He came out of it just fine but he told me she was lucky he didn't kill her.

Although his case is very unique, the outcome of mixing psychedelics with mental disabilities like this is not very good. In the end, it's up to the OP. Some people are lucky. You wanna play russian roulette, that's up to you. But if you asked for my advice, I'd say no.

healing has a point. Although there's no way we can validate his claim of being a schizo, much of his advice is sound. I've been friends with two schizo's for some time to know the patterns of thought, ideas, etc.

Obviously I didn't become friends with them solely for that purpose. But often we would get into personal conversations and I would sort of get an insight on how it's like to have your reality fucked with without your control. I've learned that it's something that shouldn't be taken lightly and I honestly am at fault for assuming it was "all in your head". I've tried many times to explain that maybe all they needed was to "snap out of it" but it just doesn't work like that. The physical alignment of cortical structures in schizo's are what make it real. It's one thing to have ideas, it's another to have a physical "hardware" problem as the cause of it.

The longer people treat schizophrenia like a "disorder" or "sickness", or think of themselves as being "sick" or "crazy", the longer it'll stay that way.

I really don't feel like explaining myself. The one's who know what I meant will understand.

You know, some people just aren't ready to reconsider what they have been taught. That's the society of today, very close-minded.

The funny thing is, Terence McKenna is very respected on this board...and for a good reason. This man's genius spreads far beyond our understanding of the mind.

However, when I posted that link on "Schizophrenia or Shamanic?", most people didn't even respond to it, give their 2 cents, add criticism....nothing. Seems like the only videos enjoyed  by good ol' Terence are when he's talking about "getting loaded".

Anyways, thanks for your comments dude, you seem like a reasonable guy

On 3.5 grams of mushrooms + weed, I've degenerated into full-blown "formal thought disorder"--a manic "word-salad" output that lasted for at least an hour during which I thought I was explaining perfectly self-evident things that, in hindsight, didn't make a nanogram of sense even in terms of constructing coherent delusions.  It was way beyond that.  My mind was racing from one thing to the next, omitting 9 out of every 10 words as just so much useless verbiage that I was sure was implicitly understood by my friend (who didn't have a clue what I was trying to say, but who was finding it incredibly hysterical nonetheless, which then made me laugh hysterically in turn as I tried to explain what I was thinking, so it was a fun time despite the complete disorganization of linguistic thought).

I really wish I had videotaped myself because I'm sure I would find it fascinating to watch a million times, in terms of possibly being able to recover *some* of the thought process I had at the time.  As it stands, though, I have no idea what I was thinking, nor do I even remember much of what I said.  I think a lot of it went something like this:

"Religion is kind of a symmetrical dinosaur because when the final fantasy pushes the poesie du present, it gets into the pancakes and THEN OH BOY do you interlocute a not so really very many scorpion tabernacle, but the vehicular clamberwang shebang-a-wang do-dat-do wong song sing into my pony when the shiny contestation wants to alright the knight to c3 to get the geometry so that everlastingly lasting into the last lasterday daydream meme-machine..."

To be fair, this was hilarious and harmless while it lasted.  The main consequence of all of this was me and my friend laughing our asses off.  But if I had to live in this mindset all the time, I'm sure it would eventually stop being funny and start being very exhausting, bewildering, and frightening, both to myself and to others.  In this chronic sense, I'd call it a sickness.

The point of the psychedelic experience, in my mind, is not so much the destination as it is the voyage.  The idea is to occasionally travel from complete rationality to complete irrationality, from France to Siberia.  Most people are stuck in France all their lives, which is lame enough, but being stuck in Siberia all one's life would be even worse, I think.  The point is to be able to travel between the two, so that you gain an outside perspective on both.

Very entertaining post to say the least, hehehe. Been there (you know, when you're brain just jumps from one to the other 'enlightening' thought). At least you and friend had fun and weren't running around the neighborhood preaching the oncoming Apocalypse (not that this happened to me, just the first example that came to mind).

You made a good point. I'm going to the gym now, so when I come back, I will explain my point. No doubt, there IS a risk in using psychedelics while exhibiting certain mental patterns, but there is a safe way of doing it.

Like I said, I'll be back in a little while with a longer, more in-detail response.

Thank you for being respectful in your answer, it's appreciated

Which is why I said that it's a lot like playing russian roulette. There's always that chance that things could go wrong. Maybe that in of itself is the obstacle that a schizo must overcome in order to purge their schizophrenia. I'm thankfully not schizophrenic so I wouldn't know. This conversation seems to open some topics that I'm quite interested in discussing...keep it lively!

A wise decision. I'm sure it must suck but weighing the pros and cons...and unfortunately in this case, the cons outweigh the pros. I'm sure you'll find solace in lucid dreaming and OBE's...something that is equally amazing. They're obviously hard to achieve but its worth it.

Ok, now to my explanation.

Terence McKenna has talked about this in "Schizophrenic or Shamanic?".

He mentions that in traditional/aboriginal societies, an individual showing 'schizophrenic' tendencies is taken by the elders, told he has a special gift, and put under the training of a Shaman. A shaman is somebody who guides the aboriginal society, heals the sick (he does what the western society today calls "alternative medicine/healing"), and is a teacher to the young and old alike. A wise man who does more than just philosophise all day, but goes into "action" when needed to.

In our society, people displaying 'schizophrenic' thought patterns are told that they have a problem, are becoming a 'threat' to society, put under drugs (which are so nicely labeled as "medicine"), and in worst case scenarios locked in psych-wards.

Most of you will clearly see the difference in treatment here.

Shamans are also know to use psychedelics/entheogens as a journeying/magickal/ceremonial tool. Now, Shamans-to-be, or so-called neophytes will NOT be allowed to use these plants right away. They start off with meditation/thought control. Then move on to doing magickal ceremonies under NO influence at all. You see, before they are allowed to let an entheogen explode their imagination into limitlessness, they will have to have control over their mind/imagination, and not the other way around. They will have to be able to do magick WITHOUT entheogens, so when they ARE under the influence, the ceremony will be THAT much more powerful and according to the expectation/goal of the ceremony.

Now, in Western society, most people don't practice meditation and thought control exercises, let alone [ceremonial] magick. So, when a 'schizophrenic', who most likely does NOT know how to control/quiet his own mind, goes onto a psychedelic experience (which will blow his already vivid imagination to whole new, seemingly limitless dimensions), the chances of fright being experienced is very big.

That IS why I suggested he take up meditation first, learn to quiet his mind and control his imagination.

I hope I cleared a few things up with this post. If there are still serious questions to be asked, I will gladly do my best to explain.

Bless all of you, and have a nice evening

This post shows that you are indeed in control of your own mind and future.  I'm am very pleased to read this.

You just made a volitional choice--you thought about it for days and made a choice--not some "jump to a position" kind of reactionary choice, but a thoughtful, volitional choice.

Now you get to watch your friends trip while you drink alcohol and smoke a little weed.  You will get to see how silly they look, and how silly their "spiritual insights" are when they are talking about them on the come-down.

You are going to need to figure out how to not be a douchebag in pointing that out though (maybe don't point it out at all).

That said, I am truly sorry that you won't get to experience music or sex or observing the budding of a flower on psychedelics.

all this is nice and humane-sounding, but in reality there's no context for a shaman in western society, except as a novelty.

If you have a mental illness and don't want to take medication and become a spiritual leader, go find some nice people in the jungle.

Bless all of you, and have a nice evening

all this is nice and humane-sounding, but in reality there's no context for a shaman in western society, except as a novelty.

If you have a mental illness and don't want to take medication and become a spiritual leader, go find some nice people in the jungle.

I would almost thank you for your concern...if it was actually genuine. I don't have a mental illness either. I haven't seen any so-called "Doctors", so there is no 'medicine' that I'm refusing to take. Keep on guessing, that'll definitely get you somewhere in your life.

You know, if you actually had something useful to add onto this post, maybe knew something better than me and pointed that out, or something CONSTRUCTIVE to add, if would've thanked you for your comment. But everything you said was just to imply me having a mental illness/problem. I don't appreciate an approach like that.

You know, I WILL travel the world at one point to learn from different masters (including, but not exclusively Shamanism), but everything at the right time. You have no business telling me what to do, even if your post wasn't meant serious.

It's exactly people who think like you do that won't allow the Shamans (the Magicians, the Witches, the Psychics, etc.) to be part of our society...which would ultimately only benefit us and cause a tremendous amount of growth and increase in knowledge. Yet, religious institutes are widely accepted, making billions of dollars/year and paying no taxes, planting the seed of fear in people's minds, and really, don't deliver ANYTHING they promise. I would know, I was raised in a Catholic household. There's a reason why kids hate going to church...it's because they don't FEEL it.

Anyways, if you were really serious about posting a reply because you felt like you had a side to the story that you wanted to be heard (and not only  to mock me) you would've taken a little more time to write that post.

Nice day now.

don't turn this negative.

I have nothing more to add because I said everything that I was thinking.

shamans are NOT relevant in modern society when we can explain things with science.

spirituality is nice to balance your life and keep you sane, but I like to keep myself in the realm of everyone else's reality.  I don't need to appease any gods, I don't make human sacrifices or kill goats.

there's also just way too much potential for someone off their rocker to do damage to others/themselves and interfere with society.

I agree, what would a Shaman do in modern society anyway besides being a crazy dude preaching to ppl on the streets begging for change.  Not relevant anymore.

What do you expect after such mockery? Don't point the finger at me now.

Well then, you could've kept that for yourself. Like I said, your intention was only to mock or "hate on" me. Again, I don't appreciate that.

Yes, and look where and what science has brought us. Machines that are controlling peoples lives (if you ever sit in a bus, notice that over 3/4 are constantly occupied with their phones, iPads, whatever...rarely do you see somebody read a book). Machines that are putting down precious rain-forests on an annual basis, JUST so we can consume some more and satsify our egoistic needs. Science has brought us into living in gray and dull cities and societies. Everything is paved now, nowhere is there anything green to be seen in the cities (luckly I live next to a forest). Science has brought us close-mindedness to whatever CAN'T be scientifically explained (so we just point the finger and mock what we don't understand...sound familiar?). Basically, science has turned potentially helpful discoveries/inventions against us. Yes, it's human nature to abuse what is given to us, but science has made abusing our environment and ourselves that much easier.

Also, science, which relies on proving everything and "cold and hard" facts has paradoxes. Scientists themselves can't explain certain things. Science can only fo so far in explaining the universe, but there's a point where science comes to halt.

So do I...but only part time. You understand? There is no harm in living in both realities, you just gotta know how to balance yourself and know with who to talk about what.

Quote:

Neither do I. I despise magickal rituals that include a sacrifice of blood. Again, you are guessing and REACHING far beyond what you actually know about me AND occult practices. This only goes to display your ignorance.

And that would be? Yes, there have been these crazy gurus and all that. But if a person is naive and stupid enough to follow such a leader, well, that just tells you something about these particular individuals. Gurus out of their minds are the minority (and I mean MINORITY) in the spiritual/occult circles. They just tend to be more mainstream BECAUSE of their crazy ideas. Most people who are serious about their spiritual/occult practices WON'T go public with them. The serious adept will eventually find such an order, or "group" without them advertising themselves.

It is not so much the "hating" that is bothering me, but the condescending attitude you are showing. Nah mean, 'bro'?

I'd consider the fact that psychedelics probably won't mix with your medication. There might be a small chance of a dangerous interaction. More likely, they simply WON'T WORK.

I'd save this for a time when you don't need to medicate yourself to feel normal. I hope such a time does come for you. Best of luck

In our society, people displaying 'schizophrenic' thought patterns are told that they have a problem, are becoming a 'threat' to society, put under drugs (which are so nicely labeled as "medicine"), and in worst case scenarios locked in psych-wards.

this is EXACTLY what i wrote about a few pages back (page5 i think...) i thought about this too, and came up with a "theory" like this that a schizophrenic person would be able to handle psychedelics if they got more control over their sunconscious and thought process through first practicing mediation etc.

I went more in depth into it in my post on page 5...

But wow though, I had no idea terrance mckenna talked about this too, i thought i was alone in my "theory" haha:laugh:

I've found it quite interesting, though I agree that advising schizophrenics to take psychedelics isn't a good idea. That's not to say I think psychedelics/naturally induced altered states don't have potential in treating schizophrenia, because I do, but anyone who goes down that road should do so with utmost care, and, ideally, guidance. Certainly there must be better ways to handle it than the drugs we use now, which are often not very effective, and sometimes downright dangerous.

Maybe a mod could delete the pointless posts, and those saying the OP should/shouldn't do it and we can turn it into a general thread on schizophrenia, or schizophrenia and drugs. I'd love to hear what schizophrenics here have to say, about drugs or the condition in general, and finding information about the subject is extremely difficult. And conducting scientific studies into the use of psychedelics in schizophrenic patients is morally objectionable, and won't happen for a looong time.

I'd happily go through the thread and write the numbers of such posts, if that helps at all.

Surely some of the shroomerites watch through the wormhole, on the episode is time real a doctor explains schizophrenic like this," it is caused by the human brains distortion of time; therefore, people don't realize cause, action, or consequence because the time in a persons brain is all scrambled up or developed incorrectly. have you guys/gals every wondered why space/time becomes so distorted and thoughts become so scrambled on psycs, it screws with our internal clock, each person lives in their own time and dies in their own time. IMO taking psychs is like living in a schizos life in some aspects for a few hours. Literally everyday on psychs would probably make a sane person insane in a short amount of time, but the human body and brain are amazing ;so, it would probably reprogram itself to function even after its been fragged.my 2cents

ok ive read through this thread and im not going to respond directly to anyone but rather duck under the fire :tongue2:

OP, for full disclosure I do have mental health problems (PTSD, chronic anxiety) but not schizophenia. A number of good friends of mine do though and they have varying approaches and experiences related to their illness which enables them to take hallucinogens (on the rare occasions they choose to do so) without any serious problems. One is schizophrenic and autistic and is heavily involved in advocacy for people with mental health problems. His feeling is that the idea of normal, which is the default from which mentally ill people deviate, is an ableist social construct that he doesn't give much credence to. Instead he emphasizes the need to integrate personal experiences and perceptions in such a way that one is able to inhabit the world and function in it but without surrendering to the notion that those of us who deviate from the socially prescribed norm are wrong, bad, faulty, etc. Approaching life as a mentally ill person from that frame of mind changes the whole discussion really. My other friend knows he is schizophrenic though he doesn't have a formal diagnosis (that i'm aware of anyway) and heavily self medicates with alcohol. Even when he wasn't though, he said to me that he has a constant internal dialogue that pushes against the intrusive thoughts. He's identified the problems in his perception, acknowledges them but is able to remove himself from the. He has taken plenty of trips in his life but feels that it was actually pot which triggered his problems.

The part I want to emphasize though is that both of these men use or have used hallucinogens but are not dependent on medication. They manage their condition with CBT, mindfulness etc. They are able to manage the intrusive and difficult thought processes from their schizophrenia. I would say, and this is just my opinion, that if living without your medication is too difficult then you wouldn't want to do hallucinogens. Using hallucinogens with mental illness, especially schizophrenia, requires an iron will and training of the mind. If I were you, I would come off the medication first (sensibly and likely under the care of a Dr) before picking up anything else.

As a final point, i think you would need to take special care if you were to delve into hallucinogens, moreso than people who don't have schizophrenia. While the jury is still out on whether you could enter a permanent psychotic state, there IS in my opinion and from what ive seen in others the significant possibility of a long, drawn out recovery period. Is it worth that just to have fun? In my mind, the risk isn't worth the reward, but it's your call.
