It always mystifies me why people diagnosed with schizophrenia feel the need to take psychedelics.  Why not just go off of your antipsychotic medication for a while and see how that goes?  If the delusions and hallucinations are fun, keep at it.  Otherwise, get back on the meds.  Consider yourself "lucky"--you get to sort of "trip" without having to purchase or manufacture an illegal substance.

Of course, there are differences between most people's tripping experiences and most people's experiences of psychosis...although part of me suspects that it is theoretically just as possible to have pleasurable, grandiose, spiritual psychoses as it is to have pleasurable, profound, spiritual trips, and likewise, that it is just as possible to have horrible, terrifying psychoses as it is to have horrible, terrifying bad trips.  It all depends on set and setting...but if one is psychotic and sort of "tripping" all the time, it's hard to constantly guarantee a good set and setting, and it would be mentally exhausting to be living like that 24/7, so I understand why it's not quite fair to say to schizophrenics, "Cheer up, mate!  According to Terence Mckenna, you're just "shamanic"!"

Been lurking here for 3-4 years, but this post finally drew me out. From the OP:

Quote:
Here's the thing, I take my meds as directed and I am no longer schizophrenic, AT ALL. No voices, no paranoid delusions, just normality.

That paragraph punched me in the heart.  OP, you are a young man with a manageable brain disorder who seems to have it under control for the moment.  There is no way in hell psychedelic drugs are going to "fix" the disorder.  The only reason for you to take psychedelics now is to have fun and experience new brain states (ie, get fucked up).

Which is great.  I fully support experimentation in getting fucked up.  But you have an underlying schizophrenic disorder.

It has been 50 years since psychedelics have been widely experimented with.  The conclusion is that they are quite safe, but can exacerbate problems in people with pre-existing mental issues, particularly schizophrenia.

Dude, psychedelics are awesome and I recommend them highly in general, but not to you.  Long term you are gonna need to hold a job, find a nice girl, raise a family--responsible shit like that.  You can't do that if you are schizophrenic.  You say you got the disorder under control now.  Why fuck with that?

Zyprexa is an antipsychotic. I don't think it would block it tho but probably weaken. I wouldn't do it if I were you.

Well, the having kids thing is optional, of course (I didn't have any).  But having a job, a couple of good friends, and a squeeze are essential to long term happiness.  Do you disagree?  That is hard to accomplish if you are constantly hearing the trees talking to the powerlines.

Or are you arguing that it is "no-worries" for him to take psychedelics when he is prone to schizophrenia?

i very much disagree with your beliefs.
it is not essential to have a "Job" friends or a lover/mate to be happy. maybe for you.

did i tell op to take them?

Yea Not a very good idea, Zyprexa Antagonizes H1 histamine receptors at serotonin receptors, Psilcybin, psilocin are agonists of serotonin receptors in the brain, where it mimics the effects of serotonin]

Your meds block serotonin to your brain, Obviously your condition causes for this dew to your schizophrenia

and the compounds in the mushrooms would exacerbate, your condition, by increasing serotonin, Your symptoms would be 10 times worse

im no expert, but these are just thoughts, take them into consideration and do some research

Lol its amazing what wiki can do

This is not necessarily true. It COULD make his symptoms worse. It hasn't for me. Everybody is different.

yes of course, compounds and chemicals are subjective in the brain
there is no telling how it is going to effect him, this is just something to keep in mind

It's a serious and possibly life changing decision. You don't want to take psys on a whim. You have to look at how well you've been doing and determine if you feel that you can trip out safely, or at least with minimal damage to your mental wellbeing.

ahmcarri, do you have any evidence that meditation could get out of control and have negative effects? I'm not trying to be a wiseass...genuinely curious, because I've never heard of stuff like that happening with meditation.

actually yes.
http://www.brighthub.com/health/alternative-medicine/articles/63006.aspx
http://trancenet.net/research/2000perezdealbeniz.shtml

Meditation CAN make things worse for a schizophrenic, just like a psychedelic can, because after all you are exploring the subconscious, and because you are tapping into it, you are opening doors in your mind whether it be from psychedelics, mediation, astral projection, obe's etc.
A schizophrenic person has a very fragile mind state and their subconscious should not be tapped into unless they know what they are doing/where they are going in their minds. And if they know they can handle the experience/ the consequence from tapping into and opening a specific part of their mind.
Meditation is just a much milder form than psychedelics of tapping into your subconscious, and it does open doors, such as when you get "enlightened". you are on a higher level of functioning, an altered sate of consciousness when you are "enlightened", some schizophrenics might not be able to handle the process of their mind elevating onto a different level of functioning because of their fragile mind state.

I dont think schizophrenics could handle being on any elevated state of consciousness just because that could take them to a really bad place in their minds by opening that "door".
However, I dont mean schizophrenics shouldn't practice meditation, because it may help them IF they know what they are getting themselves into /what doors they are opening with it.
Meditation is pretty safe because it's such a light form of tapping into your subconscious and its also controlled so if you feel you've gone too far or a place you shouldn't of in your mind, you can always stop.

I have a theory that if a schizophrenic were to practice tapping into their sunconscious and "safely" opening those doors then eventually they could build up to psychedelic use.
As by that point it shouldn't have negative consequences on their psyche if they have explored their subconscious through other means before and know it in and out by safely opening all of those "doors". They would need to start light though, first exploring themselves through mediation as that is the safest, then astral projection, obe's, lucid dreaming etc. gradually strengthening themselves for psychedelics. Like a step by step psychological exploration/strengthening process. It's essential to start at mediation though because it's "guided", lack of a better word, as in you're "guiding" your self through the process. (i.e. you can stop whenever you feel you've gone too far in your psyche)

I think this is the only way a schizophrenic person could ever prepare themselves for a psychedelic experience w/o any harmful effects coming out of it. they shouldn't just straight jump into the psychedelic because that isn't "guided", like mediation, you can't stop if you've gone too far into your psyche. The same can be said for astral projection, obe's, lucid dreaming etc. If you jump into those straight away with a fragile mind set you can probably cause more harm than good, even if you can control the experience by how far your mind dwells into it, unlike with psychedelics. Thats why it's crucial to take it a step at time and start with the most "controlled" method of exploring yourself, meditation. Slowly and safely moving furter and further in your exploration of yourself through astral projection, obe's, lucid dreaming etc ultimately building you self up for psychedelic use.

just my 2 cents, sorry its so long, just wanted to put all my thoughts down. but thats what i would recommend for the op if he really wants to trip:cool:

btw i stopped reading at page 2 so idk if this has been mentioned or if the topic changed or anything so yehh>.>

mushrooms can help to heal "schizophrenia"

just follow your heart and take everything doctors, or anybody for that matter, tells you with a grain of salt. learn to trust your intuition. afterall, there's a reason your brain is generating this idea of eating them.. what does that tell you?

I have no idea how the drugs would interract with each other. If you decide to do it, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SITTER.

Make sure you are not going through an episode as well. Make sure you don't have any worries at all and are not thinking about anything in particular that would get your mind boggled.

you realize that in the west, the only problems that arise from shizophrenia is that the person has been made to believe they are genuinely insane. and they believe it, so they are. you know in other parts of the world schizophrenia isn't even a "disease?"

actually, the schizos or crazy people are the leaders
